Chapter 228 Leaving
Catherine slid the balcony door shut and whispered, "What's going on here?"
"What do you mean?" Susan hesitated, touching the back of her head.
What could she say? Anything would be a lie, and too much might give her away.
"What's his name?" Catherine asked.
"George Anderson," Susan replied.
"Why Anderson again?" Catherine frowned. "Anyway, he says he's Spring's dad?"
"Yeah." Susan nodded.
"When did you meet him? He's a lawyer, from a good family. Be honest, does he have a wife? You can't break up a family," Catherine said seriously.
"Mom, he's not married," Susan quickly assured her.
"Well, that's good." Catherine nodded.
"By the way, how much is his car worth?" Catherine glanced at George's car.
Susan looked at the tall Range Rover and said, "Probably over a million dollars."
Catherine frowned. "He really is rich."
"What's he planning? Is he going to marry you?" Catherine asked.
"Mom, we had a chat. We'll just get a marriage certificate for now. Spring's still young, and a wedding would be inconvenient and attract gossip. He's here to take me and Spring away," Susan explained.
"Leaving today?" Catherine's eyes welled up.
Seeing her reaction, Susan took her hand. "Mom, we've been staying here, and it's been hard on you. I'm sorry."
Catherine frowned. "You're my daughter, and Spring's my granddaughter. No need to apologize. A lot has happened, and I've had my feelings, but it's all for your good."
Catherine choked up, and Susan quickly comforted her.
After a few minutes, they returned to the living room.
Catherine fixed George with a serious gaze. "George, I have no problem with you taking Susan and Spring today, but if you ever mistreat them, I won't stand for it."
George assured her, "Catherine, don't worry. I care for them deeply. I won't treat them badly."
"Good." Catherine nodded, still reluctant to let them go.
After another half hour, Catherine finally agreed to let George take Susan and Spring.
George loaded their luggage and Spring's things into the trunk, then called Serenity to hold Spring.
Serenity, who had been waiting, got out of the car with Spring and got in. George sat in the driver's seat, waiting.
People in the old apartment building peeked out at the luxurious Range Rover.
As Susan was about to get in the car, Catherine pulled her aside and whispered, "Susan, you and Dorothy are sisters. The last incident was rough. No matter who was right or wrong, you're both my daughters. As the older sister, reach out to Dorothy soon. Don't let the bond fade."
Susan frowned, feeling troubled.
The issue with Dorothy wasn't just about giving in. It was about her dignity and principles. Dorothy had become so ruthless that it was scary. Keeping any sisterly bond was out of the question. She just wanted to stay away from Dorothy because she genuinely scared her.
Seeing Susan unmoved, Catherine pleaded, "Do it for me. I don't want to see you two become enemies."
Even if Susan was heartless, she couldn't ignore that. She sighed, "Mom, I know. Don't worry."
She agreed for now, planning to see how things went later.
"Great." Catherine beamed.
Under everyone's gaze, Susan got into the passenger seat, and the Range Rover started up.
Susan waved to Catherine as the car drove off.
As Catherine turned to go back, Maja ran over, trying to get close. "Catherine, is that your son-in-law?"
"Yes." Catherine nodded.
"He looks so handsome and articulate! That car must be worth a million dollars, right? Susan is so lucky to find such a good man!" Maja gushed.
Catherine smirked. "Susan, a divorced woman, won't find a decent man. She's just settling. Didn't you all say rich people wouldn't be interested in her?" With that, she turned and went back inside.
Maja had no retort, shot a fierce look at Catherine's house, and swiftly departed.
The car drove steadily, and Susan looked back at Serenity holding Spring.
"George, thanks for helping me out," Susan said, turning to George.
George smiled. "How was my acting?"
Susan laughed. "A bit over the top."
"What do you mean?" George got nervous.
"You bought so many gifts, it just scared my mom," Susan said, covering her mouth with a laugh.
George straightened his neck. "I had to make it believable. Besides, those gifts were for your neighbors to see. They weren't worth much!"
Susan said seriously, "If I could vote for Best Actor, I'd choose you!"
George laughed heartily.
Then, Susan looked ahead and asked, "George, where are you taking us?"
"To my place," George replied.
Susan frowned. "George, didn't I mention we need to find a place for me and Spring? It'd be inconvenient to stay at your place."
"Not at all, I find it very convenient," George shrugged.
"But..." Susan started, feeling it wasn't appropriate for her and Spring to stay at George's place.
George interrupted, "Don't worry, I won't make you stay at my place. You'll see when we get there. Trust me, I won't put you in a difficult position."
Susan kept quiet, knowing George always kept his word. She chose to trust him.
