Chapter 96 Crying Bitterly
That morning, Susan quickly changed and left George's place, saying she needed to go home. George offered her a ride, but she firmly declined.
This whole situation had already led to a misunderstanding with Seb, and she didn't want it to escalate any further.
Looking back, Susan felt guilty. Her actions could easily be misinterpreted. Luckily, it wasn't George's girlfriend who showed up, or she might've been labeled a homewrecker and even gotten into a fight.
After that, George seemed to value Susan more. He gave her important tasks at work, even some personal ones.
Since George hired her, Susan couldn't refuse. But she felt his trust went beyond a typical boss-employee relationship. So, she did her best but often tried to avoid him. Office gossip was no joke, and she didn't want to risk it.
That evening, as Susan left work, someone approached her.
"Susan?"
She looked up and saw James. Her face darkened. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to find you. You work here?" James glanced at the building.
"How did you know?" Susan frowned.
"Catherine told me. You changed jobs without a word. It was hard to find you. I could never reach you!" James said with a big smile.
Susan got angry. How could Catherine tell James where she worked?
"Of course, you couldn't reach me. I blocked you. I don't want any contact with you. Got it?" Susan snapped and turned to leave.
James stepped in front of her, trying to calm her down. "Why are you always mad at me? It's been years. Shouldn't things have eased by now?"
"My relationship with you will never ease, never!" Susan said firmly.
Seeing no sign of reconciliation, James's face hardened. He put his hand in his pocket. "The annual contract between Prosperity Group and my insurance company expired, and they won't renew it. Even Amelia's teacher couldn't help. Why don't you go and ask him to be lenient and give me the contract again?"
Susan sneered, "Isn't it because your insurance company is unreliable? Companies like yours shouldn't exist. The sooner you go bankrupt, the better!"
James got enraged and raised his hand to hit her!
Susan was startled and couldn't dodge in time.
At the last moment, a hand reached from behind her, grabbed James's arm, and pushed him back, almost knocking him down.
"Who are you? Why are you interfering?" James yelled at the young man.
"If you resort to violence, I'll sue you!" the young man warned.
Susan turned around and saw George standing behind her.
George, in his white shirt, looked like a symbol of justice. He was an outstanding lawyer with a dignified presence.
"I can hit my daughter. It's none of your business!" James shouted.
George looked at Susan, his eyes full of questions.
"I have nothing to do with him!" Susan said firmly.
"You don't even recognize me!" James stepped forward to hit Susan again.
George blocked him and warned, "If you try to hit her again, I'll call the police."
Hearing "police," James hesitated. He pointed at Susan and said, "I heard you work at a famous law firm. If you can't get this done for me, I'll go to your company and expose your scandals. Let's see how you manage at work and if your boss will still value you."
Susan stepped forward to argue, "What scandals do I have for you to expose? Explain yourself!"
Before James could speak, George said, "I am Susan's boss. I highly value her and trust her. As a lawyer, I'm not afraid to sue you for defamation. Here's my business card. If you bother she again, I won't stand for it!"
George handed his business card to James and then took Susan's hand and walked away.
"Being a lawyer is so great, huh? You little slut, now you're messing around with a lawyer. You're really something, always getting close to your bosses but never giving me any benefits. You'll get what you deserve!" James shouted, stomping on the business card.
Hearing the vile curses, Susan couldn't help but tear up.
George opened the car door. This time, Susan didn't refuse and got into the passenger seat of the Range Rover.
For some reason, Susan couldn't control her emotions today. Memories flooded back, and she couldn't stop her tears.
Seeing this, George was at a loss. He handed her a couple of tissues and silently watched her.
Susan took the tissues and, with a sob, said, "Thank you."
After crying for a while, she wiped her tears and forced a smile. "Sorry for making a scene."
"Is that man really your father?" George asked, sensing deep-seated resentment.
"In terms of blood relation, yes," Susan sneered.
"How can I help you?" George's eyes were full of compassion.
"You've already helped me. If it weren't for you, he wouldn't have left so easily just now." Susan looked at George gratefully.
"If you don't mind, I can be your sounding board," George said sincerely.
His words made Susan smile through her tears. She had been really upset today and needed to vent, feeling as if a heavy stone was pressing on her heart.
"Sixteen years ago, he abandoned my mom, my sister Dorothy, and me to marry his mistress. My mom begged him on her knees, but he wouldn't change his mind," Susan began to recount.
George listened intently, realizing there was a tragic story behind Susan's life.
