Chapter 307 Can't Let Sophia Succeed
"It's no biggie; just a girl spilled red wine on me," Sophia shrugged, trying to play it cool with Amelia.
Amelia's eyes darted up and locked onto Isabella's.
Her face twisted into a scowl. Unlike Sophia, Amelia wore her emotions on her sleeve. She sneered, "Oh, look who it is—Susan's BFF. I knew something was fishy when I saw that witch. Spill it, did she send you to mess up my mom's dress on purpose?"
Isabella soaked in Amelia's outburst, feeling a twisted sense of satisfaction. She put on her best innocent act, "Miss Garcia, come on. Susan was like a sister to you. Her dad practically raised you. Isn't it a bit much to talk like that? I got no beef with your mom, why would I ruin her dress on purpose? It was just an accident. If Sophia's mad, I can compensate it. Just don't be so harsh!"
The crowd, all prim and proper, started shaking their heads at Amelia's outburst.
Ethan, who had tagged along, felt the secondhand embarrassment. He'd dragged Amelia out here, and now he was regretting it.
Sophia knew better than to pick a fight with Isabella right now. Even though she was sure Isabella did it on purpose, everyone else would buy her innocent act.
Sophia quickly tried to defuse the situation. "Amelia, chill. She didn't do it on purpose. It's all good, folks; keep having fun, nothing to see here."
The crowd, losing interest in the drama, went back to their own conversations, throwing a bit of side-eye at Sophia and Amelia.
Isabella strutted up to Amelia, shot her a smug look, and then turned to leave.
Amelia, hot-headed as ever, wanted to chase after her to argue.
But Sophia grabbed her arm and hissed, "Haven't you made enough of a scene?"
"Mom, she did it on purpose and thinks she can walk all over us," Amelia fumed.
Sophia glared daggers at Isabella's retreating back and muttered, "I know she did. Don't worry; we'll get her back for this."
Amelia just huffed in frustration.
Ethan, overhearing their exchange, shook his head and walked off.
Meanwhile, Susan was pacing outside the men's restroom, eyes glued to the ballroom exit, worried Isabella couldn't stall Sophia long enough. If Sophia showed up, her chance to talk to Dominic would be blown.
Finally, Dominic emerged from the restroom.
Susan rushed up to him, her smile tight but her tone urgent. "Mr. Robinson, I'm Susan Wilson from Pioneer Accounting Firm. I need to discuss something important with you. Can I have five minutes of your time?"
Dominic shot Susan a look, clearly not thrilled. "Ms. Wilson, I'm here for the charity gala, not to talk business. Sorry."
He turned to leave, but Susan, desperate, stepped in his way.
"What do you think you're doing?" Dominic's annoyance was palpable.
Susan quickly bowed, "I'm sorry, Mr. Robinson. I had no other choice. This won't take long, but what I have to say could seriously impact Capgemini Software Company."
Dominic finally gave her a once-over, his expression stern. "You sound like you're trying to scare me into listening, and I don't appreciate that."
"Mr. Robinson, please, just hear me out," Susan pleaded, head bowed.
Dominic thought for a moment, then reluctantly nodded.
Seeing his agreement, Susan's face lit up. "Thank you, Mr. Robinson."
Dominic led the way to a side door, stepping out onto an open terrace. The summer breeze was gentle, and the city lights sparkled below.
Under the dim lights, Dominic turned to Susan. "Alright, you've got three minutes. My wife is waiting for me."
Susan's mind raced. 'Dominic really values Sophia. Will he even believe me?'
She took a deep breath and started, "Mr. Robinson, Capgemini Software Company handed a project budget to our firm."
"I know. My wife is handling it," Dominic nodded.
Susan continued, "Yes, but this budget has been revised multiple times by different people at our firm. We've done it at least ten times, but Mrs. Robinson still hasn't approved it."
Dominic frowned. "I know Pioneer Accounting Firm's reputation. It shouldn't take ten revisions."
"Any CPA at our firm could handle this budget easily. The issue is that Mrs. Robinson is never satisfied," Susan said carefully. She knew accusing Sophia directly wouldn't fly.
Dominic chuckled. "My wife is new to this and might be overly cautious. I'll talk to her and tell her to approve your budget. Don't worry; I won't let you get in trouble with your boss."
His tone was kind, almost too kind.
Susan hesitated. If she hadn't seen Sophia today and didn't know Dominic's new wife was Sophia, she might've stopped there. But Sophia was too shady. She ditched James for Dominic, and now James was all over Catherine. Sophia wanted to milk this project for money, but Susan wasn't about to let that happen.
