Chapter 140 An Unexpected Encounter

Knowing about Maria's family issues, Susan patted her shoulder and said, "With Mr. Anderson around, Fiona can't run the show. Just keep working hard; she won't last long."

"Yeah, I get it," Maria nodded.

"I'm heading out. Stay in touch," Susan said, carrying a box as she left the storage room.

In the hallway, she saw Fiona strutting towards her in high heels.

Not wanting any drama, Susan pretended not to see her and kept walking.

But Fiona blocked her path.

"What do you want?" Susan asked coldly.

Fiona eyed the box and sneered, "You're not with George and Vivian Law Firm anymore. How do I know you're not stealing? If something goes missing, I'll be blamed."

"What are you trying to do?" Susan asked, raising her chin.

Fiona was clearly looking for trouble. Susan had hoped to avoid a scene, but Fiona had pushed her too far.

"I want to check your stuff. Cooperate," Fiona said with a smirk.

They locked eyes, tension crackling between them.

Just then, Maria rushed over. "Ms. Evans, I packed Susan's things. There's nothing from the company in there."

Fiona shot Maria a look. "You two seem pretty close. How do I know you didn't help her steal?"

"Watch your words. That's slander," Maria said, eyes blazing.

Susan knew Fiona wouldn't back down until she was humiliated. Fine, she'd give her what she wanted.

Susan dumped the box's contents onto the floor, scattering everything.

The noise drew attention from nearby offices.

Fiona started to feel uneasy. After all, she only meant to humiliate Susan, not escalate things.

Susan tossed the empty box aside and pointed at Fiona. "You think I stole something? Check everything. If there's nothing from the company, you put it all back, or I'll sue you for slander!"

Susan was livid, and Fiona's confidence wavered.

Fiona glanced at the mess and said, "I've checked. Nothing from the firm. But you threw your stuff; I'm not picking it up."

This time, Susan blocked Fiona's path. "You don't have to pick it up, but you must apologize."

"Why should I apologize? What a joke!" Fiona snapped.

"Fine, If you don't apologize. I'll hire a lawyer and sue you for slander. I got a good severance package; I can afford it," Susan said coolly.

Fiona had mocked Susan for getting laid off and receiving severance pay. Now, Susan could use that money against her.

Susan's words made Fiona lose her nerve. She knew how draining lawsuits could be, having worked at the law firm for years.

Seeing Fiona back down, Susan decided not to push further. Her threat to sue was just to scare Fiona.

Maria understood Susan was just venting and didn't really plan to sue, so she quickly helped Susan pick up her things.

Fiona, no longer arrogant, saw Susan wasn't pursuing the matter and slipped back into her office.

Maria gathered everything into the box and handed it to Susan. "Susan, take your stuff and go home. Don't stoop to Fiona's level."

Susan nodded, took the box, and said, "Take care."

"I will," Maria nodded.

After saying goodbye, Susan took the elevator.

As she walked out of the company where she'd worked for almost a year, she felt like everything was fleeting.

She had to start over again. It seemed like she'd been unemployed a lot in the past two years. Now, she had to job hunt again.

Walking out of the building, she looked up and saw George who looked surprised to see her.

Susan hadn't expected to run into George on a Monday morning, as he usually had court cases then.. She had come to pick up her things at this time to avoid him, but fate had other plans.

Since they had met, Susan didn't intend to avoid him. There was nothing between her and George that couldn't be seen.

They walked towards each other.

George glanced at the box in Susan's arms and was about to ask something.

Susan preemptively said, "I came to pick up my things from when I worked here."

"Oh, I should have expressed them to you. You didn't need to come," George said with an awkward smile.

"No need. I live nearby," Susan replied.

After standing for a moment, Susan was about to say goodbye.

But George smiled and asked, "How have you been lately?"

"Good," Susan replied, sensing something off in George's attitude but couldn't pinpoint it. So she kept it brief.

Susan couldn't forget why she had been beaten by Vivian last time. It was probably because she had gotten too close to George. She needed to be more careful in the future.

"I apologize on behalf of Vivian for what happened last time," George said, looking guilty.

Susan thought, 'maybe I was overthinking. Perhaps George genuinely felt guilty. After all, I had lost my hearing for several days because of Vivian.'

"It's all in the past. I don't want to talk about it," Susan said expressionlessly.

Although she said that, it was hard for Susan not to care. She still remembered how domineering Vivian had been that day.
