Chapter 739 I Am Truly Pitiful

Susan was just about to hail a cab when her phone suddenly rang.

She took out her phone and saw it was Seb's number. She frowned and wanted to hang up immediately.

However, Susan knew Seb's temper; if she didn't answer, he would keep calling. Besides, he could have caught up with her to talk, but he chose to call, so there must be a reason.

So, reluctantly, Susan answered the call.

"Hello?" Susan's voice was filled with impatience.

"Susan, I just have one favor to ask you today," Seb's voice on the other end was humble.

In her mind, he had always been the proud and arrogant Seb, but now his voice was tinged with disappointment, loneliness, and pleading.

"I'm just a humble nobody," she said, unable to resist a touch of sarcasm. "I doubt I can be of much help to a big-shot CEO like you.

Seb was silent for a second before he chuckled bitterly, saying, "Susan, is it necessary to mock me? Even a CEO needs help sometimes."

At this point, Susan felt a bit soft-hearted and said, "Just get to the point!"

Seb seemed to see a glimmer of hope and quickly said, "Tonight, our Anderson Family is having a family gathering, and I want to ask you to accompany me."

Hearing this, Susan couldn't help but laugh. "Seb, we're not married anymore. Bringing your ex-wife to a family gathering? That's a new one."

"Well, I can't just pick anyone to be my wife either," Seb said helplessly.

"I don't have time for your jokes, I'm hanging up." Hearing his joke, Susan immediately warned.

"Wait! Don't hang up, please." His voice took on an almost desperate edge. "You know how the Andersons are. Half of them hate my guts and would love to see me squirm. Dad's not coming, Mom and Rylee can't, and the kids are out of the country. If I show up alone, they'll eat me alive."

He wasn't wrong; his family members were either gone or deceased, and with the New Year approaching, he was indeed very lonely. Susan, in a similar situation, felt a bit of sympathy.

"Actually, I just want someone to accompany me. Even though you're not my wife anymore, you were before, and you're still Hayden and Spring's mother. They're part of the Anderson Family, so I consider you half an Anderson too. I hope you won't be offended by this," Seb's voice on the phone was sincere and gentle.

Hearing this, Susan frowned but still felt conflicted.

After a long silence from Susan, Seb chuckled bitterly. "It's okay, if you really don't want to go, I'll go alone. Goodbye!"

Just as Seb was about to hang up, Susan's voice suddenly came through, "Wait!"

"Susan?" Seb frowned.

Then Susan said, "Since I'm alone anyway, having a place to eat isn't bad."

Hearing this, Seb was overjoyed. "So you're agreeing to go with me?"

"Yes," Susan replied shyly.

Susan knew that going to a family gathering with Seb as his ex-wife would definitely attract a lot of gossip, but she had grown up hearing gossip and wasn't afraid of it. What she couldn't stand was Seb's lonely and sorrowful look.

Soon, Seb's car pulled up in front of Susan.

Before Leon could get out of the driver's seat, Seb had already opened the door and stepped out.

Seb eagerly opened the back door for Susan and made a welcoming gesture with a smile on his face.

Having seen Seb's subservient expression these past few days, Susan was no longer surprised.

Getting into the car with a blank expression, Susan felt deceived.

Because Seb's expression in the car was smug, not at all like the pitiful tone she heard on the phone.

Susan looked down at her ultra-light down jacket and the cream-colored sweater underneath and asked, "Should I go home and change?"

Susan knew Seb's relatives were either rich or noble, and they always dressed up for gatherings. Her plain clothes might really invite ridicule.

However, Seb looked at Susan and said, "I think you look great. Your presence alone will be the focus."

Hearing this, Susan rolled her eyes. "I've never heard of an ex-wife being such a prestigious identity."

"Well..." Seb laughed and said, "Your most important identity is as my children's mother."

Hearing this, Susan couldn't help but laugh.

Susan thought to herself, 'I am just going to have a meal, so let people think what they want.'

Fifteen minutes later, the car stopped in front of a five-star hotel.

After getting out, Leon went to park the car, and Seb extended his arm in front of Susan.

"What?" Susan stared at Seb in surprise.

Seb stepped forward with a cheeky smile, saying, "Humor me, just this once?"

Before Susan could hesitate, Seb had already grabbed her wrist, making her link arms with him, and led her into the hotel.

In the elevator, the more Susan thought about it, the more she felt something was off. She was sure she had fallen for Seb's trick.

Looking at his contented expression, Susan regretted it even more.

When the elevator doors opened, Susan quickly withdrew her hand. "I feel a bit unwell, I think I won't go."

Before Susan's voice had even faded, Seb grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the elevator. "You're already here, isn't it too late to leave now?"

After being pulled out of the elevator, Susan glared at Seb. "I knew you were pretending to be pitiful!"

Susan regretted it deeply now; how could she always fall for his tricks? She felt like a fool!

"I admit I was pretending a bit, but I am genuinely pitiful!" Seb kept holding onto Susan's hand.
