Chapter 39
Over the next week, Susan felt like she was living in hell. Her morning sickness was brutal, and she couldn't keep anything down. Despite looking like a ghost, she still dragged herself to work because her family needed the money.
During lunch, while her coworkers went out, Susan would rest her head on her desk. She used this time to catch a break and had Isabella bring her something to eat, though she had zero appetite.
One day, she heard faint footsteps. Susan looked up and saw Seb, dressed in a black suit, walking in.
Seb stopped in front of her desk, glanced at her pale face, and frowned. "Your morning sickness is bad. If you can't handle it, take a leave and go home."
What started as concern quickly turned sour. Susan's pent-up resentment towards Seb boiled over. She had barely seen him during this time.
She couldn't help but raise her voice. "I'm not rich like you. If I take leave, I won't get paid, and without pay, my family will starve."
Seb's mood shifted instantly. He put one hand in his pocket and sneered. "I heard you won a few thousand dollars on a bet. That should be enough for you to live on for a month or two, right?"
So Seb was still holding a grudge. Susan shot back, "I didn't steal or rob anyone when I made that bet. Did I break the law?"
Seb's face darkened. He pulled a bank card from his pocket and tossed it on Susan's desk. "I'm not here to argue. This card has a limit of $100,000 a month, enough for you and your family's living expenses."
Looking at the silver card, Susan felt insulted. She immediately stood up and angrily asked, "Seb, what do you mean by this? Do you think you're so great just because you have money?"
Seb was getting impatient with Susan's attitude. "It's in the agreement that I cover your and the child's living expenses, isn't it?"
His words struck a nerve with Susan. They had an agreement, and everything had to be done by the book.
Susan turned her face away, looking out the window. She said softly, "The child doesn't have any expenses yet. As for me, I can work. I don't need your money. Take the card back."
Seb stared at her for a few seconds, then nodded helplessly. "Fine, if that's the case, just let me know when you need it. I won't back out."
With that, he put the card back in his pocket and left.
After Seb left, Susan looked up at the ceiling, trying hard not to cry.
Over the years, she had gotten used to enduring hardships without shedding a tear because that would be a sign of weakness. She couldn't let reality defeat her.
Susan realized she hadn't felt like crying in a long time, but recently, she seemed to want to cry at the drop of a hat.
'It must be another symptom of pregnancy. Yes, pregnant women have unstable emotions. That must be it. How could I cry over Seb, a man I didn't love and who didn't love me?' she thought to herself.
Even though the agreement was clear, Susan couldn't let Seb look down on her. She'd keep working and only take his money when the child needed it.
Before long, her colleagues returned from lunch, and Isabella brought Susan a lunchbox. Susan had just taken a couple of bites when Carter walked in with two magazines.
"Hey everyone, this issue features an exclusive interview with Mr. Anderson. HR just sent it over. If you're interested, you can pass it around." With that, Carter placed the magazine on Susan's desk and went back to his office.
Before Susan could react, several female colleagues rushed over to grab the magazine, chattering excitedly as they read it.
Amused by her colleagues' enthusiasm, Susan thought, 'They're treating Seb like a celebrity. Yes, he's handsome and well-off, but he's also hot-tempered and emotionally distant. Even if Seb were a gift, I wouldn't be interested!'
"How could this be?" Aria suddenly exclaimed, looking devastated as she stared at the magazine.
"What happened?" a group of female colleagues quickly asked.
Aria threw the magazine on a desk, dejected. "Mr. Anderson is married!"
"Mr. Anderson is married? No way! Let me see." The female colleagues crowded around the magazine.
"Oh my God, it's true. Mr. Anderson admitted in the interview that he has a wife, and when did he start wearing a wedding ring on his ring finger?"
Hearing this, Susan paused mid-chew. 'Seb admitted he was married? What did he mean by that? Didn't he say we should keep our marriage a secret at the company?'
But then Susan thought, maybe Seb had his reasons for admitting he was married. As for her, Seb would probably continue to keep it a secret. Seb just wanted to let everyone know he was married.
"I told you Mr. Anderson might have a wife, but you all didn't believe me!" Isabella said, winking in Susan's direction.
"Do you know who Mr. Anderson's wife is?" a female colleague asked, still not giving up.
Isabella shrugged. "How would I know? I'm not related to Mr. Anderson."
"Obviously, someone from a wealthy family like Mr. Anderson's would marry someone of equal status. Have you ever seen a Cinderella marry into a wealthy family? Even if she did, it wouldn't last long!" Aria said jealously.
"Not necessarily. Maybe Mr. Anderson will introduce his wife to everyone someday, and she might just be a Cinderella," Isabella said with a smile.
"Definitely not!" Aria shook her head disdainfully.
Isabella walked over to Susan and whispered in her ear, "Ignore them. They're just jealous."
"Actually, they make a good point," Susan said, feeling down again for some reason.
Just then, Brooklyn walked in, smiling. "I just saw some big news!"
"More news? Isn't there enough news today? Who's it about?" Aria, always eager for gossip, asked.
"Would I bring it up if it wasn't about Mr. Anderson?" Brooklyn said with a mysterious smile.
