Chapter 1295 Showdown

The following week, Azalea invited two more groups of guests, just as Cecilia had expected. They were all mothers or mothers-in-law bringing their pregnant daughters or daughters-in-law, and all of them were heavily pregnant, almost ready to give birth.

Cecilia, as always, greeted them with a warm smile and took care of them attentively, ensuring that none of the guests sensed anything amiss.

Despite the pain she felt, Cecilia knew she couldn't show any sign of distress or dissatisfaction. The guests might think she was a bad daughter-in-law or even disrespectful to Azalea.

Gradually, Azalea began to lose her composure, her words becoming increasingly sarcastic. Cecilia knew Azalea was reaching her breaking point and was about to confront her.

But Cecilia was prepared. She was determined to stay true to her original intention: to live with Daryl, growing old together, as they had vowed.

She had promised Daryl that no matter what happened, they would remain steadfast in their love and commitment to each other and their marriage.

However, unless absolutely necessary, she didn't want to confront Azalea or let Daryl know the truth.

She didn't want to cause conflict between Daryl and his parents because of her. She knew Daryl's temperament well. Although he was very filial, he wasn't someone who couldn't distinguish right from wrong. If he found out about Azalea's actions, he would undoubtedly be furious and move out of the Fields family with her. Azalea and Isaac were strong-willed people, and it could lead to a major upheaval.

For now, Cecilia had no good solution to this problem. She could only take things as they came and adapt accordingly.

As Cecilia had anticipated, that day, after Azalea and Cecilia had seen off a pregnant mother and daughter, Azalea's tone changed as soon as she returned to the living room. "Cecilia, I really underestimated you before!"

Hearing this, Cecilia smiled. "Mom, what do you mean by that?"

Azalea sneered, "No matter how much I insinuated, you remained unaffected. I thought you would break down quickly, but you managed to hold on until now, and even kept a straight face, chatting and laughing with the guests. I must say, anyone who can handle my eldest son is certainly no ordinary woman!"

Cecilia responded calmly, "Mom, so you took me to those relatives' baby showers and invited all these pregnant women over just to insinuate things to me?"

Azalea immediately became furious. "Shut up! How dare you talk back to me like that?"

"I wouldn't dare talk back to you. I'm just stating the facts," Cecilia replied, her smile fading.

Cecilia knew Azalea was about to confront her directly. After several rounds, Azalea had likely lost all patience.

Azalea then controlled her emotions, glanced at Cecilia, and softened her tone. "Let's sit down and talk."

Cecilia knew Azalea's true intention wasn't to scold her and make her feel embarrassed. Azalea's real goal was to make her give up and retreat.

Cecilia slowly sat down on a single sofa.

"Mom, do you have something to say to me?" Cecilia asked, looking up.

Azalea sneered, "You're smart, but you can't have kids. Otherwise, I wouldn't stand a chance against you. The Fields family would be yours in the future. It's a pity you're unlucky."

Cecilia furrowed her brows but stayed silent. She knew arguing with Azalea wouldn't get her anywhere.

Seeing Cecilia's silence, Azalea softened her tone. "Cecilia, honestly, aside from your family background, you're an amazing girl. You're beautiful, graceful, capable, studied abroad, share common interests with Daryl, and you're gentle and understanding. You and Daryl make a great pair. Although I targeted you before, it was just to make you respect me as your mother-in-law. I never wanted Daryl to divorce and remarry."

Cecilia lowered her head, her eyes fixed on her fingers.

Seeing Cecilia's lack of reaction, Azalea continued, her tone becoming more emotional. "Your father and I are both in our sixties, and especially your father's health isn't good, as you know. We just hope to see our grandchildren before we pass away. We want both our sons to settle down, have families, and children."

To be honest, Cecilia completely understood Azalea's sentiments. She imagined that when she reached Azalea's age, she would likely feel the same way.

Suddenly, Azalea's eyes filled with tears. "But I never expected you to be unable to have children. I can't accept this reality. You know, we have different expectations for Daryl and Elijah. Daryl has always been outstanding in every aspect, so we want him to take over the Fields Corporation. Elijah has always been more carefree, focused on his art, and not suited for business. So the Fields family's hopes rest entirely on Daryl. The future of both the Fields family and the Fields Corporation depends on him to maintain and expand."

Cecilia believed Azalea's words. After being married into the Fields family for half a year, she had seen that Elijah was indeed as Azalea described, just a wealthy idler, incapable of taking on significant responsibilities.

Seeing Azalea's tearful face, Cecilia handed her a tissue.

Although Cecilia's expression remained calm, she was deeply moved. She understood that no mother could accept the fact that her son would never have descendants because of a woman.

Azalea gratefully took the tissue from Cecilia and wiped her tears before continuing. "Setting aside the Fields Corporation's legacy, let's talk about a man without children. His life would be so miserable. When he grows old, there will be no one to care for him, no emotional support, no continuation of life. If a person ends up in such a situation, what's the point? It's nothing but sadness and misery."

"Daryl says as long as we have each other, and that's enough," Cecilia's words sounded weak even to herself.

In truth, she was just holding onto her belief in Daryl. Azalea's words had already made her heart ache more than anything.

Azalea sneered, "That's just sweet talk. Let me ask you, if Daryl lives to be eighty, can you guarantee you'll live to be eighty without any problems?"

"I..." Cecilia furrowed her brows. She couldn't guarantee that.
