Chapter 618 Retaliation
"But George is really quite thoughtful. So many years have passed, and regardless of whether you got married or had children, he has always treated you the same. Are you really not going to accept his feelings?" After the joke, Isabella looked seriously at Susan and said.
Hearing this, Susan frowned and said, "When you truly fall in love with someone, there's no room in your heart for anyone else. Isabella, do you feel this way about Leon now?"
One question from Susan made Isabella fall silent.
Seeing Isabella quiet down, Susan understood.
After a moment, Isabella said with some frustration, "I don't know what he's thinking. He disappears for days, no calls, no messages, then suddenly reappears when I'm at my most vulnerable. We always end up arguing, and then he showers me with gifts. It's baffling."
Seeing Isabella frown, Susan said, "I heard Seb say that Leon had a tough upbringing, with no close family around him. So, he's been alone all these years and hasn't married. Maybe he has some deep-rooted fears about commitment, about family. Perhaps he needs a gentle soul to melt the ice around his heart."
"A gentle soul? You can't be serious. I'm anything but gentle," Isabella pouted.
"Maybe that's not what he needs at all. But you're a woman, Isabella. Surely you can be gentle sometimes," Susan shook her head.
Isabella frowned and said, "Do you expect me to pretend to be all delicate and lean on his shoulder, whispering sweet nothings? Ugh, I get goosebumps just thinking about it. I can't do that. I think we should just let things take their course. If we're meant to be together, we will be. If not, no matter how hard we try, it won't work out."
"Yeah, Seb and I are just not meant to be," Susan nodded.
Susan and Isabella kept each other company, with George and Leon ordering food every day. They hadn't been this relaxed in a long time, just chatting and watching TV every day, and time passed quickly.
Half a month flew by, and Susan's body had mostly recovered, but Isabella still couldn't go out.
In the Vice President's office of Prosperity Group, Andrew was sitting in his swivel chair, making a phone call.
"Mr. Martin, everything has been arranged perfectly."
"Good, you've done well with the recent tasks. I'll give you a raise."
"Thank you, Mr. Martin."
"Mm." Andrew nodded in satisfaction and then hung up the phone.
That morning, Susan borrowed a khaki business suit from Isabella.
Isabella sat on the bed, watching Susan in the mirror, and laughed. "You've gained a bit of weight these days."
"How could I not? Eating well and doing nothing every day. Hey, you've gained weight too," Susan turned and smiled at Isabella.
"Yeah, but I still have to eat well and do nothing for another month," Isabella shook her head.
"Don't worry, I'll stay here with you these days to keep you company," Susan said, comforting Isabella by patting her shoulder.
"Then I won't be lonely," Isabella said.
"But I'm just afraid I'll be a burden to you," Susan suddenly changed the topic.
"A burden? What do you mean?" Isabella asked, puzzled.
"What if someone wants to come see you? Wouldn't I be in the way?" Susan pouted.
"Who would come to see me?" Isabella immediately understood who she was talking about and blushed.
Seeing Isabella blush, Susan laughed and said, "Alright, I won't tease you anymore. I need to get to the firm. Thank goodness Dorothy and Maria have been keeping an eye on things, or we'd be out of business."
With that, Susan left Isabella's house.
As soon as Susan stepped into the accounting firm, Dorothy came up to her.
"Susan, are you okay?" Dorothy asked, looking at Susan.
"I'm fine, just twisted my ankle," Susan quickly said.
Afraid that Catherine would find out about her situation, Susan didn't tell Dorothy the truth. She just said that she twisted her ankle while out with Isabella, and Isabella was hit by a car, so she asked Dorothy to watch the firm for her.
"You wouldn't let me visit you; I was so worried," Dorothy frowned.
"You had to watch the firm for me; it was busy. Besides, I was fine," Susan smiled.
At this point, Dorothy said, "The firm has been pretty stable these days, but there's not much improvement in performance."
"Just keeping it running is a huge help," seeing Dorothy's guilty expression, Susan quickly comforted her.
"My experience is limited; it's thanks to Maria's help," Dorothy said.
Hearing this, Susan looked around the office and saw only the receptionist and another clerk, but no Maria. She frowned and asked, "Where's Maria?"
"She was just here; I don't know where she went," Dorothy also looked around.
"Go back to work; I need to check on the firm's operations these days," Susan said, then turned and went into her office.
As Susan was buried in work, there was a sudden knock on the door!
"Come in," Susan said without looking up.
The door opened, and someone walked in hurriedly.
"Susan?"
Hearing Maria's voice, Susan looked up to see Maria's anxious and worried face.
Susan frowned and asked, "Maria, what's wrong?"
Maria hesitated, not knowing how to start.
Seeing this, Susan pointed to the chair opposite her and smiled. "Sit down and tell me slowly."
Maria sat down and looked at Susan, saying, "Susan, you have to help George!"
Hearing this, Susan was stunned and, seeing Maria's worried expression, asked, "What do you mean? What's wrong with George?"
"George is in big trouble this time. He might lose everything and never be able to work as a lawyer again!" Maria answered, her face clouded with worry.
Hearing this, Susan took it seriously and asked, "Explain clearly, what happened to George?"
Maria then replied, "It seems you don't know yet. Yesterday, someone posted an article on an online lawyer forum exposing George for instructing his client to bribe a witness to give false testimony. The client also came forward to testify against George. As soon as the news broke, many companies and individuals terminated their contracts with George. If the allegations are true, George will have his law license revoked!"
