Chapter 97 I Don't Have a Husband

That afternoon, just before clocking out, George called Susan into his office.

"Mr. Anderson, what's up?" Susan asked, standing by his desk.

Since their last incident, Susan and George had become more like friends. She didn't avoid him as much anymore. Maybe they could become good friends, and Susan appreciated George's care.

George looked up. "I need a favor. Are you free tonight?"

"I don't have plans. What do you need?" Susan smiled, sensing it was personal.

She agreed easily; friends help each other out.

"Do you know Willard Ramirez from Skyreach Group?" George asked.

Susan thought for a moment. "Who in Maple Valley doesn't know? He's well-respected and big on charity. He’s funded many schools here and represents Maple Valley at the Aidamore conference."

George smiled. "Today is Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez's fortieth wedding anniversary. Their kids are throwing a party, and I got an invite. But I need a date. Can you come with me?"

Susan was shocked.

She hadn't expected this. She thought, 'Doesn't George have a girlfriend? He's young, successful, and handsome. Why ask me? Isn't he worried his girlfriend will get mad?'

Seeing her hesitation, George added, "You should probably check with your husband first. My bad."

Susan replied, "No need, I don't have a husband."

George looked surprised. "Didn't you say you have a child?"

Susan sighed. "I'm divorced, and my child passed away."

She couldn't hold back her emotions. She covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

George was stunned.

After a moment, he stood up and apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't know."

"It's okay, it was a long time ago. It's my personal stuff." Susan wiped her tears and looked up.

"Are you alone now?" George fidgeted, unsure what to do.

"Actually, being alone is nice, no attachments." Susan forced a smile.

She quickly composed herself. "When's the party, and what do I need to prepare?"

George replied, "I'll pick you up at 6:30. Just dress formally. I've got the gift covered."

"Okay, I'll get back to work." Susan smiled and nodded before leaving.

George watched her leave, feeling inexplicably .

After work, Susan rushed home. She needed to find the right outfit and get ready quickly. For such a formal event, she had to look her best to avoid embarrassing George.

Susan rummaged through her wardrobe and finally found a black evening gown that she had bought for a Prosperity Group event years ago.

She'd always been frugal, so this was her only evening dress. It had cost her six hundred dollars, which had stung at the time.

Putting it on, Susan stood in front of the mirror. Her appearance and figure were the same as two years ago, but she felt different inside.

The dress was off-shoulder, showing a lot of her fair skin. She added a simple necklace and small earrings, the only jewelry she had bought over the years. They gave her a fresh and elegant look.

Seeing it was almost time, Susan quickly styled her hair, fixed it with a silver rhinestone hairpin, and put on silver high-heeled sandals. The mirror now reflected a young and elegant figure.

Satisfied, she nodded, grabbed a silver clutch, and hurried out.

She hadn't worn such formal attire in a long time. Stepping out, her mood lifted.

George, waiting in the car, saw her approaching and was impressed.

He quickly got out, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door.

Seeing George's gaze, Susan looked down at herself and asked, "Is this okay?"

"You look stunning!" George said sincerely.

"HopeI don't lower your image," Susan smiled and got into the car.

George seemed distracted. After getting in, he started the engine, and they drove off.

Throughout the drive, George seemed flustered, adjusting his tie several times.

Susan noticed but assumed it was because the event was important. Even in court, George was always composed. She'd never seen him like this.

Soon, they arrived at Willard's grand mansion in the suburbs. The vast estate and magnificent architecture spoke volumes about Willard's status.

Night had fallen, and the mansion was brightly lit. The garden was filled with luxury cars, indicating Maple Valley's elite were in attendance.

After getting out, Susan felt nervous. She'd never attended such a grand event and didn't know high society etiquette, fearing she might embarrass herself.

Actually, it wouldn't matter if she embarrassed herself; she was mainly afraid of embarrassing George.

George walked up, smiling as he extended his left arm.

Susan felt shy but knew it was proper etiquette, so she took George's arm and walked with him towards the mansion.

Sensing her apprehension, George patted her hand and said, "Don't be too nervous. Just be yourself, and I'll be with you."

Hearing this, Susan looked up and met his bright eyes, feeling a strange sensation in her heart.
