Chapter 290 So That's How It Is
"Don't call the cops; that'd be super embarrassing!" Catherine quickly waved her hand, looking all freaked out.
"Embarrassing? Seriously? If anyone should be embarrassed, it's James. He ignored us for years and now he wants to waltz back in? How does that even make sense?" Susan snapped.
Catherine frowned, "You know I hate the neighbors gossiping. James and them go way back. I don't want things to get awkward. Plus, he looks so pitiful now, homeless and all, and Dorothy's taken him in. I can't just kick him out."
"Why's he homeless? What about Sophia and Amelia? Weren't they all lovey-dovey?" Susan asked, clearly annoyed.
Catherine sighed, "James said he couldn't stand living with Sophia anymore. The older he gets, the more he misses his real daughters and our family. So he ditched Sophia and came back to us."
Susan sneered, "Mom, you actually believe that crap?"
Catherine just looked down, saying nothing.
Seeing her mom hesitate, Susan got more anxious. "Mom, you're letting old feelings mess with your head. You can't reconcile with him, or your later years will be a total mess!"
Catherine's eyes suddenly got all serious. "Don't worry; I will never get back with James. I let him in 'cause he was pathetic, and he's your dad. But getting back together? No way."
Susan finally relaxed a bit.
Then she said, "No wonder Dorothy took him in so easily. She's probably using him to mess with Henry."
"I tried talking to Dorothy, but she wouldn't listen. James has filled her head with all sorts of his bad ideas, and she listens to him. I really don't know how this will end," Catherine said, looking worried.
Susan felt a twinge of worry too.
If this keeps up, Dorothy and Henry will be at each other's throats. The adults might not care, but what about Amanda? If they split, will Amanda end up with just a mom and no dad?
Thinking about it made Susan sad. Considering Hayden and Spring were doing okay and had both her and Seb's love, she wanted to keep things good with Seb. It's tough on kids when their parents are enemies.
Even though Susan knew Dorothy's actions might make Henry more determined and mess with Amanda's future, Dorothy wouldn't listen to her now and would think she had some hidden agenda.
So, in the end, Susan just told Catherine, "Mom, try to get Dorothy to think about Amanda before she does anything."
"She won't listen to me. She's all buddy-buddy with James now. I can see Dorothy's got his genes," Catherine said, feeling helpless.
Susan stayed quiet, not knowing what else to say, and just decided to wait and see.
Before heading out, Catherine grabbed Susan's hand and said, "Susan, I know things are rough for you right now, but with everything going on here, I can't really help you out."
Seeing the guilt in her mom's eyes, Susan quickly smiled, "Mom, I'm doing fine with Spring. I'll bring her and Hayden to visit you next time."
"If I get a chance, I'll come see you. The house is a mess, and if you come back, it'll just lead to more fights," Catherine said thoughtfully.
Hearing this, Susan's eyes got a bit teary. She knew her mom didn't blame her anymore and still cared, which made her feel better.
"Mom, call me if you need anything. Remember what I said, if things get too crazy, let them stay here, and you can move in with me. I'll find a bigger place," Susan advised.
"Okay, don't worry," Catherine nodded.
As Susan walked out of the building, she saw it was still early, so she decided to drop off a few more resumes and try her luck.
Out of nowhere, a pair of hands grabbed her, making her jump!
"Susan, wait up."
Susan turned around and saw it was Tuva, the nosy neighbor from across Catherine's door.
Tuva was always in everyone's business. Last time, they had a spat until she brought George to help, and Tuva finally backed off. What did she want now?
Even though Tuva was a pain, Susan didn't want to make an enemy out of her.
"Tuva, what's up?" Susan asked, forcing a smile.
Tuva looked around to make sure no one was watching, then let go of Susan's arm and whispered, "You haven't been back for months, right? Do you know what's going on with your family? James is back living there. Did Catherine tell you?"
Susan knew Tuva wanted to gossip.
"Yeah," Susan said, not really in the mood to chat. "Tuva, I have stuff to do, so I can't talk..."
But before she could finish, Tuva grabbed her wrist again.
Susan frowned. Was Tuva really not going to let her go unless she talked all the mess of her family?
Just as Susan was about to lose her cool, Tuva frowned and said, "Susan, I just want to say a few words. It won't take long."
Sighing, Susan decided to hear her out.
Tuva leaned in, "Susan, Catherine's had it tough. I don't want to see her get played. That James is bad news. Do you know why he came crawling back to your family, begging Catherine?"
"Why?" Susan asked, confused. Did Tuva know something she didn't?
"The woman who stole James, Sophia, has hooked up with some rich old guy. So she divorced James and kicked him out!" Tuva said, still fuming at the mention of James, showing how much she despised him.
Hearing this, Susan looked at Tuva in shock.
So that's why James suddenly changed his tune and came back to Catherine. He got dumped by Sophia.
Karma's a real thing. When James left Catherine, he probably never thought he'd get ditched by Sophia in the end.
