Chapter 1057 Boiled Pasta in Plain Water
After a few days of searching, Cecilia realized that she couldn't find a job in Northstar City.
Holding only fifty dollars in her pocket, Cecilia was deeply troubled.
Although she wasn't worried about tuition, the scholarship wasn't enough for living expenses, and Rainey needed medication all year round, so she had to send money back home from time to time.
That afternoon, Cecilia sat at her desk with a bowl of hot-boiled pasta with an egg and a sprinkle of green onions. She couldn't afford vegetables because they were very expensive in Northstar City.
Even though it didn't taste good, she had to fill her stomach to attend classes and work.
Cecilia ate the pasta while calculating that she could last fifty days with the fifty dollars.
Maybe, after fifty days, Daryl would forget about their issue, and she might be able to find a job by then.
Suddenly, Cecilia's phone rang.
Seeing it was a call from home, Cecilia quickly answered.
"Cecilia, how have you been lately?" Her mother's voice came through quickly.
"Mom, I'm doing well." Cecilia quickly put on a smile.
"Have you eaten?" Rainey asked with concern.
"Yeah, I'm eating right now, " Cecilia quickly replied.
"What are you eating?" Rainey asked.
Hearing this, Cecilia looked down at what she ate now and felt a pang of sadness. She quickly said, "Mom, I'm eating beef pasta. It tastes great!"
"Good, eat more, don't starve yourself." Rainey advised.
"Mom, how are you and Quentin doing lately?" Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief after fooling Rainey.
She had always been like this, only sharing good news and not bad, because her family was struggling, and Rainey was in poor health. She didn't want Rainey to worry, so she developed a strong and independent character.
Hearing Cecilia's words, Rainey suddenly fell silent.
After a long pause, Cecilia knew something was wrong at home.
"Mom, what's going on at home?" Cecilia asked urgently.
"Nothing, everything's fine," Rainey stammered.
"Wait, you must hide me something. Is something wrong with Quentin? Tell me quickly, I'm worried sick!" Cecilia said anxiously.
Finally, Rainey revealed the truth. "Quentin was hit by a motorcycle on his way to work a few days ago!"
Hearing this, Cecilia was very worried. "Is Quentin hurt?"
"His leg is broken, and he has some minor injuries, but nothing serious. The doctor said he needs to stay in the hospital for a few more days," Rainey replied, choking up.
"Mom, is it the medical expenses?" Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief knowing Quentin was okay, then asked.
She knew her family's financial situation too well. For the past few years, Quentin had been working alone to support her education and Rainey's medical bills, so there were no savings.
Hearing this, Rainey said, "Quentin didn't want me to tell you, but I had no choice. I didn't want Quentin to bear it alone."
At this point, Rainey couldn't continue.
Cecilia quickly asked, "Mom, didn't the motorcycle driver pay for the medical expenses?"
"The driver fled, and we haven't found the person yet. Quentin's hospital bills were borrowed from relatives, but you know, our family has been struggling for years, and not many relatives are willing to help us. They're all waiting to be repaid. And Quentin's leg won't heal for three to five months, so living expenses for these months are also a problem," Rainey said worriedly.
Cecilia knew their family had always been poor, so their relatives were reluctant to associate with them, fearing they would ask for money. Rainey must have faced a lot of disdain to borrow the money this time.
Hearing Rainey's words, Cecilia resolutely said, "Mom, don't worry, I'll send money back as soon as possible."
"You're just a poor student, where will you get that much money?" Rainey said worriedly.
"Mom, I got a job here. The pay is high, several thousand dollars a month!" Cecilia had to lie to Rainey.
"Really? Then Quentin and I can relax a bit. But Quentin is having a hard time now. He often seems lost in thought, and I'm really worried about him." Rainey shifted the topic to Quentin.
"Mom, what's wrong with Quentin? Did he have a fight with his fiancée?" Cecilia asked anxiously.
Rainey said worriedly, "His fiancée is not young anymore. She's been with Quentin for two years, and her parents are urging her to get married. But we can't afford a house. She was still standing up to her family, but after Quentin broke his leg, her family is even more against it and is pushing her to go on blind dates. Quentin has become more silent, barely saying a word. He's already thirty, and not young any more!"
Thinking of Quentin's honest and simple face, Cecilia couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.
If it weren't for her and Rainey's burden, Quentin wouldn't have been delayed in getting married at this age.
"Cecilia, I'm just venting. Don't overthink it. Focus on your studies abroad. Once you graduate, everything will be fine," Not hearing Cecilia speak for a while, Rainey quickly comforted her.
Given the situation, Cecilia had no choice but to take on the family's burden.
Then, Cecilia said, "Mom, I'm doing some small business with my classmates here, and it's going well. Tell Quentin and his fiancée that I'll find a way to send money back soon so they can get married."
"Really? Cecilia. Quentin's wedding will cost a lot. Don't do anything you shouldn't!" Rainey said excitedly but then worriedly.
"Mom, I'm an adult. I know what I should and shouldn't do. Okay, I have to go raise money now," Cecilia could only comfort Rainey this way, even though she felt heavy-hearted.
"Okay." Rainey quickly hung up, afraid of delaying Cecilia.
Cecilia looked down at the half-eaten bowl of boiled pasta, her eyes blank.
Her life was on the brink of despair, but the family's situation forced her to take responsibility.
She couldn't watch Quentin and his fiancée break up. Quentin loved her deeply and couldn't bear the blow, especially with his broken leg. If anything happened to Quentin, Rainey wouldn't be okay either.
Cecilia's hand slowly clenched into a fist, and she had to make a decision.
