Chapter 460 Ask For Wedding Gifts

Susan really didn't want to go head-to-head with Carol. After all, Carol was her mother-in-law, and getting on her bad side could totally mess things up for her.

So, Susan replied, "Mom, I was just thinking about what detergent to use for Seb's clothes."

Then she grabbed a laundry basket and headed upstairs.

"Make sure you hand wash them right and iron them flat. I'll show you how later," Carol called after her.

"Got it," Susan mumbled and went upstairs.

Back in the day, Susan only hand-washed her undies. Since moving here, all their outerwear went straight to the dry cleaners. Now, staring at the mountain of clothes soaking in the sink and tub, she felt totally swamped!

Looking at herself in the mirror, Susan told herself, 'If you're gonna do it, do it right!'

It took her the whole morning to hand wash all those clothes.

After lunch, Carol came up to supervise her ironing. Susan thought Carol would just peek in and then leave, giving her a chance to nap before ironing.

However, Carol brought a stack of newspapers and parked herself on the chaise lounge, clearly planning to make sure Susan didn't slack off.

With no other choice, Susan stood there ironing clothes one by one. Her eyes were drooping, but she kept going.

It wasn't until after 4 PM that Carol finally put away the newspapers, yawned, and said, "Put the clothes away. Kathy bought a chicken; go downstairs and make some chicken soup. Seb and Hayden will want some when they get back."

"Got it," Susan replied, feeling like she was about to cry.

Before leaving, Carol gave a cold smile.

Susan caught that nasty smile and frowned, knowing Carol was just messing with her. She was fuming.

Sitting on the bed, Susan was at a loss. Should she keep putting up with this? If she did, her future was gonna be rough.

Just then, Kathy's voice came from downstairs. "Mrs. Susan Anderson, Mrs. Carol Anderson wants you downstairs!"

Hearing this, Susan didn't dare delay and quickly put on her slippers and went downstairs.

As she hit the last step, she saw someone in the living room and frowned.

"What are you doing here?" Susan walked up to him, her eyes full of surprise and annoyance.

James awkwardly said, "Susan, I know you and Seb are getting married. I heard the in-laws are here, so I brought some gifts to visit."

"You're not welcome here, so please leave!" Susan snapped.

She never expected James to show up, which was just giving Carol a reason to laugh at her. Better to get him out of there fast to avoid any embarrassing comments.

After speaking, Susan picked up the gift boxes at James's feet and dragged him towards the foyer.

At that moment, Carol, sitting on the sofa, spoke up. "Susan, that's not right. Your father came to visit us out of goodwill. How can you speak to him like that?"

Susan could tell Carol's smile was faker than a three-dollar bill; she was clearly ready to enjoy the drama.

So, Susan said to Carol, "Mom, you don't get our family's situation."

"Even if I don't get it, you shouldn't treat your father like this," Carol said, acting all righteous, then turned to Kathy. "Kathy, please invite Mr. Wilson to sit down and make him a nice cup of coffee!"

"Yes," Kathy replied, clearly not thrilled.

Before Kathy could even move, James, hearing Carol's words, pushed Susan aside and plopped down on the sofa opposite Carol with a grin. "Mrs. Anderson, you're so understanding. My daughter has always been a bit rebellious, but I still care about her."

"All parents are like that. It's tough being a parent," Carol said with a smile, but her eyes were sizing James up, and she slightly curled her lips, clearly looking down on him.

"Mrs. Anderson, I'm not doing well right now and could only bring some local specialties. Please don't mind," James said, trying to butter her up.

"We're all family, so I won't mind. But we don't usually eat these local specialties. You should take them back and enjoy them yourself. But thanks for the thought! By the way, why didn't Susan's mother come with you? I heard you haven't been living together for a long time, is that right?" Carol asked, her eyes shrewdly fixed on James.

"Don't mention it. My younger daughter had some issues with her marriage and is now in the sanatorium with her mother. We divorced a long time ago, but we're discussing getting back together. After all, Seb is a big deal, and we need to attend the wedding together. We can't let Seb lose face," James said with a smile.

Hearing this, Susan felt helpless but couldn't kick him out, so she was super annoyed.

Carol, however, was fiddling with the sapphire ring on her hand and said, "Given the situation, even if Seb loses some face, it's inevitable."

"Seb choosing our Susan is her good fortune!" James said, patting his knees with a smile.

At this point, Carol glanced at James and said, "Mr. Wilson, Seb's father is out, and as a woman, it's not appropriate for me to keep you for dinner. I'm also a bit tired, so I won't keep you company."

Just as Carol was about to stand up, James quickly stood up and said anxiously, "Mrs. Anderson, I have something to discuss with you!"

Seeing his anxious expression, Carol sat back down. "Then make it quick."

James then smiled and said, "Mrs. Anderson, you see, I'm not young anymore. I have no skills or abilities, so life is really tough. The Anderson family is a big family, and getting married is a big deal. We can't skip the proper traditions, right?"

At this point, Carol raised an eyebrow. "What traditions? Mr. Wilson, be more specific."

At this moment, Susan's eyes were practically shooting daggers at James, having guessed what he was about to say.

Sure enough, James then looked at Carol and said, "Mrs. Anderson, now that the Anderson family is getting a daughter-in-law, shouldn't there be some wedding gifts for the bride's family?"
