Chapter 54 This is the Life of the Rich and Powerful

Susan stepped into the villa and found herself in a spacious foyer. The place was stunning, even the shoe rack was made of precious rosewood. The vases on the cabinet looked like antiques. She wasn't an expert, but she'd seen similar ones in museums and executive homes.

After changing shoes, they finally entered the living room. The furniture was all expensive rosewood, heavy and grand. It felt like stepping into a noble's home, and Susan instantly held her breath.

A middle-aged man, around fifty, sat on a rosewood armchair. He wore gold-rimmed glasses, black trousers, and a white shirt, giving off a high-ranking official vibe. Luckily, his features weren't as stern as Seb's. Instead, he had a friendly smile.

Looking at the man's face and nose, which resembled Seb's, it seemed he was Seb's father, Todd Anderson.

About ten feet away from Todd, there was a chair that didn't match the villa's decor. Sitting on it was a middle-aged woman dressed elegantly and grandly.

The woman was also around fifty but well-maintained, though her makeup was a bit heavy, probably to cover fine lines. Her eyes were sharp, unlike Todd's kind demeanor.

Susan thought this must be Seb's mother, Carol Mitchell. Her eyes were quite similar to Seb's.

'Thinking about it now, Seb's cold demeanor probably came from Carol, but her eyes were even more shrewd and sharp,' she thought.

As Susan sized them up, their gazes also scrutinized her, especially Carol's eyes, which were as sharp as knives. What puzzled Susan the most was that they seemed a bit surprised to see her, and she didn't understand why.

The next moment, Susan felt a tightness around her waist.

She looked down and saw Seb's arm already wrapped around her waist. He respectfully but without a smile said, "Dad, Mom, this is my wife, Susan Wilson."

Susan quickly bowed her head and said, "Dad, Mom, hello!"

At this moment, Leon timely placed the gifts on the coffee table. "Mr. Todd Anderson, Mrs. Carol Anderson, these are the gifts Mrs. Susan Anderson prepared for you."

Seeing Carol's gaze fixed on her, Susan quickly lowered her eyes.

It was Seb's father, Todd, who put down the newspaper and kindly smiled. "So, you're Susan? Come, sit down and let's talk."

"Thank you, Dad," Susan thanked him and was pulled by Seb to sit on a three-seater rosewood sofa.

At this time, Laura had already brought over some coffee. Susan felt a bit uneasy, glancing at the dazzling antiques and the luxurious carpet under her feet. She felt out of place in this high-ranking and wealthy family.

Just then, Todd suddenly received a phone call. He got up and, while putting on his coat, said to Carol, "The inspection team has arrived, I need to go meet them. Make sure to entertain Susan well, don't neglect her."

"Your son brought her home, how could I dare neglect her?" Carol said her first words since Susan entered, making Susan feel a bit embarrassed, and even Seb and Todd felt a bit uncomfortable.

Todd, being a man of the world, immediately said, "You're too old to be throwing childish tantrums. It's just a small disagreement with Seb, do you have to take it out on Susan?"

Even if Susan was naive, she could tell that Carol was dissatisfied with her as a daughter-in-law. Todd was trying to cover for Carol. She lowered her head, pretending not to know anything, but felt Seb's hand holding hers.

This simple gesture sent a warm feeling through Susan's heart.

'Actually, why should I feel inferior or overly concerned about Todd and Carol's attitude towards me? I didn't marry Seb out of love or for their family's power. I just wanted to give the child in my belly a legitimate status. Now that my goal was achieved, nothing else mattered to me at this moment.'

Thinking of this, Susan felt at ease.

"Susan, from now on, this is your home. You don't need to be so reserved. I have work today, but let's have a meal together another day," Todd said with a smile as he walked up to Susan.

Susan quickly stood up and nodded. "Thank you, Dad."

Then, Todd walked to the foyer, where a secretary-like person in a suit was already waiting outside with a briefcase. After whispering a few words to Todd, they left the villa one after the other.

After Todd left, the room was quiet for a few seconds, then Seb's mother, Carol, spoke. "I heard you used to work at Prosperity Group?"

Hearing this, Susan knew Seb must have already explained her situation to Carol, so she nodded. "I used to work in the finance department at Prosperity Group."

"So you worked in finance, no wonder you're so good at scheming," Carol said with a cold smile.

Hearing this, Susan immediately understood. Carol must think she married into the Anderson family for Seb's money, using all sorts of tactics.

Carol's mocking smile made Susan, who had a bit of pride in her nature, feel very disgusted. However, out of respect for Seb, she couldn't retort and had to endure it for now.

"Do you have any other family members?" Seeing Susan not retort, Carol asked the next question.

"I live with my mom and my sister," Susan replied.

Carol frowned at this. "What about your father? Is he deceased or divorced from your mom?"

At this moment, Susan saw the disdain in Carol's eyes. She bravely met her gaze and said, "He ran off with his mistress fifteen years ago. Since then, the word 'father' has not existed in my life, so please don't mention him in front of me."

A look of surprise flashed in Carol's eyes, probably both for Susan's family's situation and for Susan's bold response. She then sighed and nodded. "I see."

"What does your mother do for work?" Carol continued to ask.

"When I didn't have a job, my mother worked. Since I started working, she has been taking care of the household. My sister is still in school. Besides my uncle Charles Wilson's family, we don't have any other relatives. In the past few years, our family had a tough time, and our relatives were afraid we'd borrow money from them, so they all distanced themselves from us," Susan quickly finished this sentence.

After hearing this, Carol couldn't help but frown.
