Chapter 500 An Unexpected Gift
Susan put down her phone, took a sec to gather her thoughts, and then leaned back in her swivel chair.
While she was zoning out, Isabella barged in.
"Hey, the courier just dropped this off," Isabella said, plopping a package in front of Susan.
Susan frowned at the package. "Who the heck is sending me stuff outta nowhere?"
"Why don't you just open it?" Isabella said, plopping down across from her.
Curiosity got the best of Susan, so she tore into the package.
Inside, there was a layer of shockproof plastic film. She peeled that off to find a thick plastic bag, then a cardboard box, and finally a yellow cotton bag.
Isabella chuckled. "Is someone messing with you or what?"
Susan tilted her head, eyeing the layers of packaging.
She opened the cotton bag and found a black velvet box about half a foot square. The box was fancy and felt heavy.
With Isabella watching closely, Susan opened the black velvet box.
As soon as she did, she was momentarily blinded by the dazzling light inside.
Inside the box was a set of ruby jewelry. That's a complex ruby necklace with a main stone bigger than a thumbnail, four secondary stones the size of pinky nails, all top-quality blood-red rubies, encrusted with a bunch of tiny diamonds. There was also a pair of matching ruby earrings. In the sunlight, the rubies sparkled so brightly that they almost blinded Susan and Isabella.
While Susan was admiring the bling, Isabella grabbed the velvet box, her eyes nearly popping out. "Whoa, this set must be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Is this a surprise from Seb while he's away?"
Susan thought it must be a surprise from Seb too, a happy smile creeping onto her face. But she couldn't help but think, 'How could he send such an expensive gift without even a heads-up?'
Holding the black velvet box, Isabella said, "Man, it's so unfair. I'm just as good-looking and talented as you. Why can't I find a guy like that?"
Susan laughed. "Maybe you'll find an even better guy someday."
"Yeah, right. I'd be lucky just to get married in the next two years," Isabella said, tossing the velvet box onto the desk.
Just then, a beige card slipped out from the box.
"What's that?" Isabella, sharp-eyed, was the first to notice the card on the desk.
She grabbed the card, glanced at it, and then exclaimed, "George?"
Susan was startled and quickly snatched the card from Isabella's hand.
The card had four lines scribbled on it: [Got a case to handle on your wedding day, so I can't make it. This set of jewelry was originally for our wedding. Since I don't need it now, I'm giving it to you as a wedding gift. Wishing you a happy marriage and eternal happiness.] It was signed by George.
Susan recognized George's handwriting; it was definitely his. Seeing those words, she felt a pang in her heart, like she couldn't breathe, and she could almost see George's eyes filled with resentment.
Isabella craned her neck to peek at the card and sighed. "Man, George is really sentimental. I think he still has feelings for you."
Susan placed the card on the jewelry, her eyes lost in thought as she stared at the set. "Honestly, I hope he can move on from our past. Sometimes, I feel really guilty towards him."
Right then, Susan was filled with guilt. Even though George had gone to extremes in the end, she still felt she owed him. His care and kindness were still fresh in her memory.
Isabella couldn't help but say, "George has to deal with it himself. Your guilt won't help. But seriously, how do you keep running into these sentimental guys? You must have some crazy romantic luck."
"Useless romantic luck just brings trouble," Susan shook her head with a bitter smile.
"Easy for you to say. I don't even have any romantic luck, not even the bad kind to let me experience love," Isabella complained.
"If you experienced real heartbreak, you'd get it," Susan said as she stood up and picked up the velvet box with the jewelry.
Then, she walked to the safe, bent down, opened it, and placed the velvet box inside, locking it up.
Seeing this, Isabella lowered her voice and said, "You put such a valuable item in the office? Aren't you worried someone might steal it?"
Even though there was a safe in the office, it wasn't super secure at night or during holidays.
Susan had no choice but to say, "I can't return this right away, and if I take it home, Seb will overthink it, and we might end up arguing."
Hearing this, Isabella nodded. "True, I know how jealous Seb can get. But aren't you planning to keep this gift? I think George is the type who won't take back something once he's given it."
Hearing this, Susan frowned deeply. She knew George too well; Isabella was totally right. But this gift was too valuable, both in terms of its worth and its sentimental value. How could she accept it?
So, Susan was really troubled, not knowing what to do.
Seeing Susan's distress, Isabella suggested, "Why not return it to George when he gets married? But who knows when that'll be."
Susan crossed her arms and said, "We'll have to talk about this later."
"Enough chit-chat, I need to get back to work," Isabella said, standing up.
Just as Isabella was about to step out the door, Susan suddenly called out, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, Seb's best man had a last-minute emergency and can't make it to the wedding, so Leon will be the best man instead."
