Chapter 256 Collapse
After getting dressed, Susan grabbed her purse, kissed Spring on the cheek, and told Serenity, "I've got an appointment with a friend, I'll be back afternoon."
"Okay." Serenity smiled and nodded, then went back to giving Spring some water.
Susan left and was about to press the elevator button when she saw George coming out from the opposite door.
"Don't you start work tomorrow? Where are you off to so early?" George asked.
"I'm meeting Isabella. She starts work tomorrow too, so we're hanging out," Susan replied quickly, avoiding eye contact. She was never good at lying.
"Since she's going to be our bridesmaid, we should treat her well," George said with a smile, stepping into the elevator with Susan.
"Where are you meeting? I'll drive you," George offered.
"We're meeting at the mall, but it's in the opposite direction of your work. I'll just take a cab," Susan declined politely.
George frowned slightly. "Alright, I have a meeting this morning anyway."
At the community entrance, they parted ways.
After George drove off, Susan hailed a cab.
While waiting at a traffic light, George glanced to his left and saw Susan in a cab two lanes away. He was surprised.
Susan had said she was meeting Isabella at the mall, which wasn't in this direction. George frowned.
He noticed Susan kept checking her watch and seemed in a hurry, a demeanor far removed from someone about to go shopping.
When the light turned green, Susan's cab turned in another direction.
George decided to follow, ignoring traffic rules and causing honking from other cars.
The cab stopped in front of Seb's community.
Susan alighted, settled the fare, and gazed up at the towering buildings. It was a place she never thought she'd revisit, yet fate had brought her back.Adjusting her purse, she walked into the community. Standing in front of a familiar door, she took a deep breath, touched the hard object in her bag, and pressed the doorbell.
She told herself, 'If Seb tries anything, I'll use the kitchen knife on him!'
The doorbell rang twice before someone opened the door.
"Susan, come in!" Seb's eyes lit up with excitement.
Without any expression, Susan stepped inside and stood in the center of the room. It looked the same as when she used to live there, even the curtains. She didn't know if Seb had kept it that way on purpose or if it was a coincidence, but it didn't matter now.
"Want some juice or coffee?" Seb asked eagerly.
Susan, stern-faced, sat on the sofa. "No need. Let's get to the point. I don't want to waste time."
Seb's expression darkened. He sat on a single-seater, looking at Susan. "Do you hate me so much you can't spend even a minute with me?"
"It's not hate; it's despise. And it's not a minute; I don't want to spend a second with you," Susan replied firmly.
Old feelings of love and hate surged back. If it weren't for Hayden, she wouldn't be here, facing Seb.
Seb looked hurt. He sat quietly for a moment, then lit a cigarette and took a few hard puffs.
The smoke made Susan cough. Realizing this, Seb quickly put out the cigarette.
Susan, impatient, said, "Why did you call me here? Whose son is Hayden?"
"Hayden is our son," Seb said, looking directly at her.
Susan frowned, agitated. "Seb, George and I are getting married. Stop lying to ruin our happiness."
"You think I'm lying?" Seb looked hurt.
"What else? You said Hayden is our son. Didn't you say he died shortly after birth? The hospital even issued a death certificate. Was that fake?" Susan questioned.
"Yes, it was fake. I hired someone to forge it so you'd believe he died and wouldn't look for him," Seb admitted.
Susan stared at him in disbelief. "Why did you do that? What good does it do to lie about his death? And you kept Hayden's adoption a secret, raising your own son in the shadows. These aren't the actions of a sane person. Do you think I'm an idiot who'll believe anything you say?"
Seb rubbed his hands, looking dejected. "I thought you didn't love me and still had feelings for Henry. I couldn't accept that. I was arrogant, never failing to get what I wanted, including love. You kept talking about divorce. To make sure I'd give up on you, I lied about the child's death so you wouldn't fight for custody. That impulsive lie led to more lies. I regret it now. I wronged you and Hayden."
Seb's face showed guilt and remorse. He rubbed his face hard, and Susan had never seen him so regretful.
