Chapter 461 Can't Bear It
Hearing James' words, Carol's eyes narrowed as she glared at him.
Susan, on the other hand, was freaking out and stepped up, saying, "What the heck are you talking about?"
Right then, Susan felt totally embarrassed. She already felt like crap next to Carol, and now with James popping up, she was beyond mortified. She couldn't believe James would come up with such a dumb idea.
James threw his hands up and said, "Susan, you're living the high life now, chilling in a villa, cruising in fancy cars, decked out in designer gear. But have you thought about how tough your dad's got it? You can't just live it up and forget about your family, right?"
Susan knew he was being a jerk again. She couldn't argue with him, so she lowered her voice and said, "Seb's already sorted your life out. What more do you want? You're so greedy; it's really not worth feeling sorry for you!"
"Seb's a big shot, running a huge company, and he only gives me $800 a month. What am I supposed to do with that? You guys are treating me like a beggar. I'm your dad, your real dad. Aren't you worried about what people will say about how you treat me?" James started whining.
Susan thought that Seb giving him $800 a month should cover his basics, and she felt she had done her duty as a daughter. She didn't expect him to be so ungrateful, showing that James's nature was truly hard to change, which made her super sad and disappointed.
Carol sneered and said, "Our Anderson family can't skip the proper traditions when marrying a daughter-in-law, but I'm curious to hear how much you want as a wedding gift."
James lowered his head and thought for a moment, then immediately held up eight fingers. "At least this much!"
"$80,000?" Carol raised an eyebrow.
James shook his head immediately.
"$800,000?" Carol frowned.
James shook his head again.
"$8,000,000?" Carol's voice rose.
This time, James nodded.
Susan stared at James in shock.
Carol sneered and said, "Mr. Wilson, you're really asking for a lot!"
James grinned and said, "Mrs. Anderson, your family's loaded. Eight million dollars is just pocket change!"
Carol smiled and nodded. "We can swing eight million dollars as a wedding gift, but Mr. Wilson, I gotta ask, how much are you planning to give back as dowry?"
James was immediately dumbfounded and stammered, "Give back? Haha, your Anderson family is so rich, why would you care about a little return gift?"
"That's not right, Mr. Wilson. Didn't you just say that wedding gifts are necessary to keep up proper traditions?" Carol's words were sharp.
"Our family is broke; we can't afford to give back!" James said shamelessly.
Carol stood up and said, "If your family can't afford to give back, then don't mention wedding gifts anymore!"
"Mrs. Anderson, you can give less, $800,000 or even $80,000 would be fine!" Seeing Carol about to leave, James quickly stood up and chased after her.
Carol shot James a look of pure disgust and snapped, "You're filthy; don't touch me. Kathy, get him outta here!"
"Yes, ma'am." Kathy quickly stepped up to escort James out.
But James just stood there, shameless as ever.
Susan stood off to the side, watching coldly. She felt utterly humiliated, her self-respect stomped into the ground.
Kathy finally managed to drag James out.
Carol glanced at the stuff James had brought and said, "Kathy, toss this junk out. Who knows where it came from?"
"Yes, ma'am." Kathy quickly grabbed the items and chucked them out to James.
Soon, James's cursing echoed from outside. "The Anderson family is so heartless! Think you're all that just 'cause you're rich? You don't even recognize your own kin. You all look so dignified, but you're not good people at all."
Standing there, hearing James's vulgar rant from outside, Susan felt more self-conscious than ever.
How could she have such a father? She was always ashamed of him, especially today in front of Carol. Her face flushed with anger, and her hands clenched into fists, wanting to punch the wall.
As Carol walked past Susan, she glanced at her with disdain and said in a low voice, "Now you get why I was against your marriage to Seb, right? Your family and ours are worlds apart. Seb marrying you only brings him shame, it does him no good at all!"
Susan's eyes welled up with tears as she met Carol's sharp gaze, not knowing what to say. Even her usual optimism was nowhere to be found.
Susan's face was full of dejection and inferiority, which made Carol very pleased. She then raised her chin and said to Susan, "You and Seb are already married and have two kids. Of course, I won't break you up, but you need to know your place. As long as you are a good wife and mother, respect us, and take good care of Seb and the kids, our Anderson family won't treat you badly. Otherwise..."
Susan squinted her eyes. "Otherwise what?"
"Otherwise," Carol smiled and said, "Being a daughter-in-law of the Anderson family is not easy."
With that, Carol turned and went upstairs.
After Carol went upstairs, Susan slumped on the steps.
What did she mean? Carol was telling her to be obedient, or she'd be kicked out? No wonder Carol never liked her. It wasn't that she didn't like her, but she looked down on her background and thought she wasn't worthy of her son.
That night, Susan used the excuse of not feeling well to avoid going downstairs for dinner.
Later, feeling thirsty, Susan found the thermos empty and went downstairs to get some water.
Just as she was about to go downstairs, she heard voices from below.
"Seb, you didn't see how shameless that James was. How could Susan have such a father? He actually asked our family for eight million dollars as a wedding gift. It's outrageous! I've never seen someone so shameless." Carol's voice, as if telling a joke, reached Susan's ears.
"Mom, Susan doesn't want a father like that either. She had a tough childhood. Please don't make fun of her." This was Seb's voice.
