Chapter 122 Narrowly Escaped Death
Seb's sarcasm made Susan furious, so she angrily typed out a message.
[Mr. Anderson, we're divorced. Who I see is none of your business. Even if I want to be with another man, it won't be you!]
Susan showed the message to Seb, who then threw the phone at the wall. It shattered on impact.
Unable to hear the crash, Susan only saw her phone shattered on the floor.Who would've thought even deaf people could argue so intensely?
She glared at Seb and turned away, not wanting to deal with him. Seb ran a hand through his hair, paced around, and finally calmed down. The veins on his forehead receded.
He picked up the utensils from the table and handed them to Susan, signaling her to eat. She ignored him and turned away.
Seb, feeling helpless, gently placed the utensils back on the table and went to pick up the broken phone. After a while, Susan saw him trying to reassemble it, but it was too damaged to turn on. He eventually gave up.
Susan felt a bit moved. Seb, usually irritable and prone to storming off or continuing arguments, was different today. He didn't hit or insult her; instead, he tried to make amends. This was rare for him.
Despite this, Susan had no intention of reconciling. They were done. It would be best if he left and never came back.
Lost in thought, Susan suddenly saw Seb's hand offering her his phone with a message on it. She pushed his hand away, but he grabbed her wrist and forced the phone into her palm. Annoyed, she knocked it to the ground.
Not being able to hear had its perks; she couldn't hear things breaking, so it didn't scare or hurt her.
After a while, she saw Seb pick up the phone from under the bed and place it on the bed before walking to the window.
Susan noticed the phone screen was cracked and was shocked, as Seb's phone was a high-end, custom-made model worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Susan felt a pang of regret, realizing she'd been too impulsive.
Seb's earlier message came into view again, just a few words in large font: [I'm sorry!]
She thought she must be mistaken, but upon closer inspection, it was clearly something Seb had typed into the notebook. Susan wondered to herself, 'Seb apologizing? It seemed out of character for him.'
She looked up and saw Seb's back at the window. He seemed lonely, and even though she couldn't see his face, she sensed his dejection.
Susan felt a bit remorseful. Why argue with him? He was there to take care of her. Was she being ungrateful?
But it was too late; the argument was over. She couldn't possibly apologize to Seb, could she?
She decided to let it go. If she ignored him, he'd probably leave soon.
Susan lowered her eyes and let her mind wander.
After a while, she looked up and was stunned! Seb was no longer at the window. She looked around the ward, and he was really gone!
Had he gone home? Susan wondered.
At first, knowing Seb had left made her feel relieved. His presence made her uneasy.
But after a while, she began to feel a bit lost.
As more time passed, Susan felt increasingly anxious and fearful.
In the silent night, she couldn't hear anything, and now she couldn't even speak. Although the hospital should be safe, she felt no sense of security.
Susan thought about calling Isabella to come and keep her company, but it was already very late. Isabella had worked all day and was tired. Plus, tomorrow was the weekend, and Isabella had to go back to her hometown early to see Michelle.
Suddenly, Susan's stomach growled.
In front of her was her favorite food, and she was not only craving it but also starting to feel hungry.
Susan glanced at the door and thought, 'Since Seb had left, I might as well eat the food instead of wasting it. Seb wouldn't know whether I ate it or threw it away.'
So, the next moment, Susan lowered her head and started eating.
She devoured. This meal was probably the only thing that brought her any joy in the past few days. Her luck had been terrible these past two years.
As she chewed, Susan looked up and suddenly saw Seb standing at the door. She immediately choked.
Why had Seb come back? And he had brought a nurse with him, who was pushing a folding bed.
Susan's face turned bright red with embarrassment. She was choking on her food and started coughing violently, looking around for water.
She was really going to choke to death!
Seeing Susan's distress, Seb suppressed his laughter and quickly ran to the table, pouring a glass of water and handing it to her.
Too embarrassed to care, Susan took the water and drank it down in big gulps.
After finishing the water, she felt a sense of relief, as if she had narrowly escaped death.
