Chapter 254 He Is Our Son
As George's expression darkened, Hayden's eyes welled up with tears, and he began to rub his eyes in distress.
Susan's maternal instincts kicked in. She hugged Hayden and shot George a reproachful look. "Can you lower your voice? You're scaring him!"
George clammed up immediately.
Susan gently comforted Hayden. "Don't cry. He was just loud. Let's ignore him, okay?"
Hayden's face lit up with a smile. "Okay!"
Susan observed Hayden's quick shifts in mood but didn't give it much thought, assuming it was just typical child behavior. However, as she looked closely at him, a sense of familiarity washed over her. His features seemed oddly recognizable, but she couldn't quite pinpoint where she had seen them before.
"Where are your parents?" she asked, thinking he might be lost.
"My daddy is over there!" Hayden pointed to a corner.
Susan glanced that way and then told George, "Wait here. I'll take him to his dad."
"I'll go with you," George said, frowning.
"No need. I'll be right back." Susan smiled, took Hayden's hand, and walked toward the corner.
"What's your name?" she asked with a smile.
"Hayden," he replied, looking up at her.
Susan paused, a wave of confusion washing over her. Hayden looked a lot like Seb. Could this be the Hayden Seb adopted years ago? But why did he look so much like Seb if he was adopted?
Lost in thought, Susan found herself at the corner. She hesitated, wondering if this was another of Seb's arrangements.
Hayden pulled her forward, and she felt a bit lost. If this was indeed Hayden, her heart would be profoundly moved. She remembered when he had just learned to walk, a nostalgic warmth enveloping her..
Turning the corner, she saw Seb standing by the wall. He wore sunglasses, so she couldn't see his eyes, but just seeing him made her legs go trembling.
"Mommy, that's my daddy!" Hayden pointed at Seb.
Susan frowned. "Don't call me that. I'm not your mommy!"
"You are my mommy!" Hayden insisted.
"I'm not!" Susan snapped, feeling both angry and embarrassed.
Her wrath wasn't aimed at Hayden but rather at Seb's mysterious schemes. However, with George close by, ready to respond to her call, she felt secure. Seb wouldn't dare make a move in George's presence."My daddy said you are my mommy!" Hayden's eyes started to well up.
It made sense. Hayden had been longing for his mommy, and now, having found Susan, he was on the brink of tears as she refused to acknowledge it.
Seeing his tears, Susan's heart softened.
She stopped arguing and walked straight toward Seb, stopping three feet away, still wary.
"Seb, what do you mean by bringing me here?" she asked angrily.
Seb took off his sunglasses and said, "Isn't it obvious? Our son misses you, so I brought him to see you!"
Susan got even angrier. "Did you teach him to call me mommy?"
"You are his mother!" Seb said firmly.
"Seb, stop talking nonsense." Susan felt he was being unreasonable.
"I'm not. Listen, Susan, his name is Hayden. He is our son!" Seb said, stepping forward to grab her shoulders.
Caught off guard by the intensity in Hayden's gaze, Susan hesitated. Struck by Hayden's striking resemblance to Seb, she found herself questioning, "What's really going on here?"
She pushed Seb's hands away. "Seb, what kind of trick are you trying to pull? If you say this child is yours, I wouldn't doubt it. He looks just like you. But to say he's mine? That's ridiculous!"
Susan was convinced Seb was lying to confuse her. Hayden looked so much like Seb; who knew which woman Seb had him with!
Aware that Susan wouldn't easily buy into his story, Seb suggested, "Susan, this is a bit too much for a quick chat. Let's find a cozy spot to sit down and really talk."
Susan sneered, "Well, Seb, I won't fall for your tricks again. I'm busy planning my wedding with George. Go find another woman to act with. I don't have time for this!"
As Susan turned to leave, Hayden tugged on her coat, pleading, "Mommy, please listen to daddy, okay?"
Looking at Hayden's big, tear-filled eyes, Susan's heart softened again.
