Chapter 469 Thrilling

The screech of brakes made Susan's heart jump, and she whipped her head around.

She saw a car, like, fifty meters back, and someone was down by the roadside.

She first thought it was Todd. No one else was around but them.

Next thing, Susan was sprinting in her high heels.

As she got closer, it was really Todd on the ground.

Her mind went blank. She didn't dare touch him, seeing his eyes closed and blood everywhere.

"Dad, you okay?" Susan's voice was shaky, almost crying.

Todd was groaning, but words weren't coming out.

Hearing him, Susan felt a tiny bit better. At least he was alive.

The driver, looking scared out of his mind, got out of the car, hands shaking. "Call an ambulance!"

That snapped Susan back. She fumbled for her phone, dialed 911, and then started calling family.

At the hospital, everything was white and cold. Carol sat on a bench, Kathy stood nearby, and Susan was pacing like crazy outside the operating room.

"How did Todd get hit by a car?" Carol's eyes were full of blame.

Susan had to be honest. "I don't know. We talked a bit, then went different ways. Then, I hear brakes and see Dad on the ground."

Carol got even angrier. "You must've said something to upset him, right?"

Susan was pissed but kept it in. Now wasn't the time to fight.

"Dad's always nice to me. Why would I disrespect him? Ask him when he wakes up if you don't believe me." Susan tried to stay calm.

Carol, not getting the reaction she wanted, sneered. "Why'd you even come home? If you hadn't come home and fought with me, Todd wouldn't have gone after you and gotten hit."

Susan was fuming inside but held back. Todd was still in surgery; she couldn't make things worse.

Carol, thinking Susan felt guilty, got nastier.

"Why did Seb marry you, you jinx? Ever since you showed up, everything's gone wrong. Now Todd's hit by a car. What bad luck!" Carol spat.

Susan's eyes turned icy, staring at Carol.

Even if Carol hated her, cursing and blaming her was one thing. But she even showed no concern for Todd, her husband. That was cold.

It showed Carol was selfish, and Susan figured her marriage with Todd was pretty much over.

Susan didn't want to waste energy arguing with Carol. She felt more and more detached, sometimes thinking she should just ignore her completely.

Seeing Carol still yapping, Susan finally snapped, "Mom, Dad's still in surgery, and we're in a hospital. If you wanna blame someone, save it for home. Otherwise, you're just making the doctors and nurses laugh at us."

She glanced at the nurses passing by.

Carol was taken aback, glared at Susan, and finally shut up.

The hallway went quiet.

After a while, Susan checked her watch. Todd had been in there for over an hour. What was taking so long? They said it was just a leg fracture.

Carol, looking anxious too, turned to Kathy, "Did you call Seb?"

"I called three hours ago. Mr. Seb Anderson said he'd catch the next flight back," Kathy replied.

Just then, the operating room door swung open.

A doctor in a white coat stepped out, and Susan rushed over, "Doctor, how's my dad?"

The doctor, all business, said, "The patient's knee is shattered. We need to remove all the bone fragments, so it takes time. Don't be too anxious."

Susan frowned. 'Shattered knee? How'd it get that bad?'

She felt a wave of guilt. If she hadn't gone back for her phone and argued with Carol, maybe Todd wouldn't have chased after her and gotten hit. She was torn up inside.

Carol stepped forward, "Doctor, will his leg be crippled?"

The doctor hesitated, "Depends on recovery. But at his age, it'll be slower. He'll need crutches for a long time and will have some aftereffects."

"Thanks," Carol said, looking really sad.

The doctor then went back into the operating room.

Seeing Carol's dejected look, Susan was puzzled. Shouldn't Carol be more worried about Todd's overall condition? Instead, she was fixated on whether his leg would be crippled.

The surgery dragged on for four to five hours. When Todd was finally moved to a ward, he was still out cold from the anesthesia.

Carol sat by his bedside, looking stressed.

Susan and Kathy stood a bit further away, both worried.

Suddenly, there was a commotion outside!

Susan turned and saw the door swing open. Seb, in a black trench coat, rushed in. Through the open door, she saw Leon and a few others outside.

"Dad!" Seb hurried to Todd's bedside, eyes locked on him.

Todd had just woken up. Hearing Seb, he slowly opened his eyes.

Seeing Seb's worried face, Todd managed a weak smile. "I'm fine, no need to fuss."

"Fine? Your knee's shattered. The doc said you'll need crutches for a long time!" Carol chimed in.

"Just being alive is good enough," Todd smiled.
