Chapter 602 Pregnancy
Susan leaned against the headboard for an hour before slowly accepting the reality.
Although she hesitated, she still decided to keep the child because it was hers and Seb's.
She wondered if it was heaven pitying her; whenever she was alone, whenever life threatened to swallow her whole, a child had entered her life. First Hayden, then Spring, and now this tiny being nestled within her.
With Hayden and Spring not by her side, this child was a beacon of hope, a promise of companionship in the years to come.
Would things have been different if this pregnancy had come before the divorce? Would it have been enough to salvage their marriage?
In that case, Seb definitely wouldn't have agreed to the divorce, but their married life wouldn't have been good either, because he would live with guilt towards Carol for the rest of his life. It was a burden Susan refused to place on him.
So, Susan absolutely wouldn't tell Seb about her pregnancy; she didn't want him to feel guilty towards her.
She decided to have the child and raise it on her own.
After calming down, Susan touched her still-flat belly and lost in thought. Actually, this should be a happy event for her because she wouldn't be alone anymore. With the child's company, she wouldn't be lonely in the future.
After thinking it through, Susan decided to eat well, sleep well, and not work so hard anymore, prioritizing the child's health above all.
Of course, she also had to keep her pregnancy a secret.
In the following days, Susan intentionally slowed down her pace, stopped working overtime, stopped drinking coffee casually, and paid more attention to her diet. People around her thought she had recovered from her emotional setback and were secretly happy for her.
Naturally, Susan also intentionally concealed her morning sickness in front of others. Fortunately, she had her own office, so she could deal with it by vomiting into the trash can.
However, morning sickness was really hard to control, and she would have this reaction even in front of others.
One afternoon, Isabella took Susan out for pasta.
As soon as the waiter brought the pasta to the table, the smell made Susan react, and she immediately covered her mouth and ran out.
Isabella suspiciously stared at Susan's back, feeling something was off, and then followed Susan to the restroom.
Standing at the restroom door, Isabella frowned as she watched Susan vomiting over the sink.
When Susan finished vomiting and was wiping her mouth with a tissue, she saw Isabella's strange expression in the mirror.
To be honest, Isabella was closer to her than her own sisters, and Susan couldn't hide anything from Isabella, this time included.
"Are you..." Isabella asked but didn't finish.
Susan neither confirmed nor denied it, saying only, "Let's talk at the table."
Then she turned and went back to the table, and Isabella followed.
Sitting down, Susan looked at Isabella seriously and said, "I'm pregnant."
Hearing this, Isabella wasn't surprised because she had seen Susan's morning sickness several times before and could easily guess the result.
"You and Seb have been divorced for just over a month. Was this child conceived before the divorce?" Isabella asked, frowning.
"To be precise, it was conceived the day before the divorce," Susan replied.
Hearing this, Isabella stared at Susan for a second, then said reproachfully, "How could you be so careless? The night before the divorce, you two still..."
She didn't finish, feeling it was a bit unbelievable.
"I didn't expect it to be so coincidental. Luck has never been my strong suit." Susan said with a bitter smile.
After thinking for a moment, Isabella said, "Let me take you to Seb."
"What for?" Susan frowned.
"To tell him you're pregnant and get you two remarried!" Isabella explained urgently.
Hearing this, Susan said, "If I could remarry him, I wouldn't be hiding this."
"But you have a child to think about now. You can't possibly raise this baby alone." Isabella said anxiously.
Susan then calmly said, "Seb and I can never be together again. Even if we forced it for the child's sake, we wouldn't be happy. I would make him live with guilt towards his mother forever. I don't want him to be unhappy or live a burdened life, so I don't plan to tell him about the pregnancy. I'll have the child and raise it alone."
Hearing this, Isabella nodded and said, "You love him too deeply, but isn't it a bit unrealistic to hide this from everyone and raise the child alone?"
Susan smiled and said, "That's why I need your help."
"How can I help? I'm a woman. If I were a man, I could say the child is mine," Isabella said.
Susan laughed and said, "I just need you to help me keep it a secret for now. When I can't hide my belly anymore, I'll go to another city and say I'm going for a year of further study. After the baby is born, after it's about six months old, I'll come back and say I've adopted an orphan."
"So you've thought of everything. As your best friend, of course, I'll support your decision. I'm just worried Seb will get suspicious. This isn't something that can withstand scrutiny," Isabella said worriedly.
Susan hesitated and said, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
"That's all we can do," Isabella nodded.
Then Susan suddenly grabbed Isabella's hand and said, "By the way, don't tell Dorothy. I'm afraid she'll tell my mom. My mom doesn't know about the divorce yet."
"How long can you hide the divorce?" Isabella frowned.
"Let's keep it a secret for as long as we can. Although Dorothy and I have reconciled, we can never go back to how we were. We're not that close anymore, and she's focused on her work and doesn't have time for my issues," Susan said.
Hearing this, Isabella said, "Dorothy is indeed working hard, but she hasn't worked for years, so she's essentially learning as she goes."
"Actually, I'm very relieved. I never thought she could turn over a new leaf. I thought she would waste her life away," Susan said.
"That's why women shouldn't get too involved in relationships. In the end, it's themselves who suffer," Isabella sighed.
