Chapter 241 Shock
Susan and Isabella kept chatting.
"I can't believe it! You even snagged the top lawyer in Maple Valley! Spill the secrets so I can find a rich guy too!" Isabella joked.
"I had no choice. Raising Spring alone is tough. George treats Spring like his own and has helped us out a lot. I don't know how to repay him," Susan sighed.
Isabella looked shocked. "Wait, you don't love George? You're with him just because he's good to Spring?"
Susan put down her coffee and frowned. "They say feelings can develop over time, don't they? I think we're getting there. At my age, I'm not chasing romantic love anymore. I want a peaceful life and a good future for Spring. Don't you agree?"
"Yeah, you're right! You know exactly what you want, while I feel like I'm left with nothing. I want a peaceful life too, but it seems nobody is interested in me. A colleague set me up with some guys, but as soon as they learned about my mom's condition, they all bailed. People are so shallow. George has everything and still chose you, a divorced woman with a kid. He must really love you. You should tie the knot before he has a change of heart!" Isabella complained and advised.
Susan chuckled and interjected, "Hush now."
"We're besties, so I'm just looking out for you. It's the truth, but it's up to you to accept the advice," Isabella said.
Susan looked down at her coffee and shook her head with a smile.
Isabella pulled out a shopping bag. "I got these clothes for Spring for the New Year."
"You shouldn't have," Susan said, smiling as she took the bag.
"I'm Spring's godmother, right? I may not have much money, but I can still buy some clothes." Isabella laughed.
"Thanks, from both of us," Susan said.
Just then, Susan's phone rang. It was George.
Isabella teased, "Wow, he's already checking up on you?"
Susan rolled her eyes and answered the phone. "George?"
"Where are you? I'm nearby and can give you a ride home," George said.
"I'm at the coffee shop downstairs from the office with Isabella."
"How's the coffee? I'm almost there," George said.
"Just finishing up," Susan said with a smile.
"Great, I'll be there in two minutes."
"Okay, see you soon!" Susan ended the call.
Isabella smirked. "You talk about feelings blooming, but you and George are already joined at the hip!"
"Shut up!" Susan blushed.
"He came all this way to pick you up from work. We haven't seen each other in ages, and you're leaving in two minutes. You're totally ditching me for him!" Isabella complained.
"We've covered everything, and Spring's waiting at home. Plus, the New Year is coming, and Serenity's heading back to her hometown," Susan explained quickly.
"Alright, no need to explain. You haven't seen each other all day. Go have a romantic evening with your big-shot lawyer. Maybe Spring will get a sibling tonight!" Isabella teased.
"You're so annoying!" Susan's face turned crimson.
"I'm just giving you advice. If you get pregnant, George will definitely marry you right away, and you'll be set!" Isabella laughed.
Susan looked out the window and saw George's Range Rover parked outside.
She grabbed her bag and stood up. "George is here. I'm done listening to your nonsense. Bye!"
"Can't we chat a bit longer?" Isabella said, looking dejected.
"Go mingle with someone else," Susan replied, flashing a smile, then walked out of the coffee shop.
Isabella watched as Susan got into George's car, which then drove off. She sighed, picked up her bag, and left too.
After walking about a hundred yards, Isabella suddenly remembered she had left her phone in the coffee shop and hurried back.
Just thirty feet from the coffee shop, she saw a figure in a black coat coming out.
Isabella stopped in her tracks, staring at the man walking away. 'Isn't that Seb? What's he doing here?' she thought.
With questions swirling in her mind, Isabella went back into the coffee shop, retrieved her phone, and felt something was off.
Just as she was about to leave, she turned back and asked a waiter, "Excuse me, where was the gentleman who just left sitting?"
The waiter pointed to a spot behind where Isabella and Susan had been sitting. "Right there."
Isabella glanced over and frowned. "Was he the one who broke a cup earlier?" she murmured.
"Yes, he broke one of our cups and gave us an extra hundred dollars. He must be rich!" The waiter was still excited.
"Oh, very rich indeed." Isabella nodded and walked out.
Outside, the more Isabella thought about it, the less it seemed like a coincidence that Seb was there.
The thought furrowed Isabella's brow. It appeared that Seb's interest in Susan remained unwavering.Had Seb overheard the entirety of her and Susan's conversation just now?
Reflecting on the playful banter she had engaged in, a wave of embarrassment washed over Isabella.
