Chapter 1385 Self-Mockery

Cecilia went to the changing room to swap out her gown for her black pencil pants and beige sweater. She put on her black cashmere coat and grabbed the pearl necklace she had been given earlier, heading off to find the waitress in the red dress who had handed it to her.

But there were so many waitresses at the wedding that she couldn't find the right one after searching for a long time.

Feeling frustrated, Cecilia looked down at the pearl necklace in her hand. She had no choice but to put it away for now and ask Azalea about it after the wedding. Such an expensive necklace surely wasn't given to her by a stranger. Cecilia suspected Azalea might have noticed her dress lacked accessories and had someone give it to her.

As Cecilia stepped out of the hotel, she saw a familiar figure ahead.

She stopped in her tracks, looking at the black-clad figure not far away.

At some point, he had changed out of his formal wear too, now dressed in a black cashmere coat. His hair was slightly tousled by the breeze, and his face remained sharp and imposing, exuding an air of authority and coldness.

He stood about a hundred feet away, and Cecilia felt unsure whether to approach or retreat.

Just then, a black luxury car pulled up in front of him.

Daryl turned slightly, his gaze landing on Cecilia.

Their eyes met.

Earlier, he had helped her out on stage, and Cecilia felt a bit grateful. If it hadn't been for him, the host might have made her continue the game, which would have been embarrassing.

Cecilia stood there, feeling awkward.

Daryl glanced at her just as Douglas opened the car door. He looked away, slipped inside, and the door shut behind him. Douglas joined him, and the luxury car drove off, vanishing into the distance.

At that moment, Cecilia truly felt his coldness.

She couldn't help but smile wryly. Yesterday, she had mocked him, thinking he still had feelings for her and had orchestrated her role as Elowen's bridesmaid.

Now Cecilia realized she was completely wrong. It was just Elijah and Elowen trying to set them up. He had no intention of reconciling with her.

Thinking about it made Cecilia feel irritated. She blushed as she recalled the moment on stage when they kissed during the game. She had accidentally brushed her lips against his cheek.

How mortifying!

Cecilia then walked towards the street, hailed a cab, and headed to the Fields Mansion.

The Fields family was still at the wedding, so she could quietly take Thaddeus without disturbing anyone.

But the cab driver took a wrong turn and ended up in a traffic jam. By the time Cecilia reached the Fields Mansion, more than two hours had passed, and the Fields family had already returned.

"Ms. Thorne, you're here?" Finn, the butler, greeted her at the entrance.

"Yes," Cecilia smiled politely.

As she entered the living room, Cecilia saw Azalea sitting on the couch, playing with Thaddeus.

"Hey, Mrs. Fields," Cecilia greeted her.

Thaddeus reached out to Cecilia, signaling for her to pick him up. "Mommy, Mommy!"

"Hey, Thaddeus," Cecilia quickly went over and scooped him up.

Azalea was still in her wedding attire, indicating she had just returned and hadn't had time to change.

"Cecilia, why did you leave without eating?" Azalea asked with a smile.

Cecilia hesitated before replying, "I had some stuff to take care of, so I left early."

"Have you eaten? I'll have Finn ask the kitchen to whip up something for you," Azalea said, turning to instruct Finn.

"No need, I grabbed a bite with friends outside," Cecilia lied, not mentioning the traffic jam. If Azalea knew she hadn't eaten, she would insist on having the kitchen make something, and Cecilia didn't want to trouble anyone or stay longer.

"Good, you young folks need to take care of yourselves. Don't wait until you're old to regret it," Azalea advised with a smile.

After some small talk, Cecilia said, "Mrs. Fields, I'm taking Thaddeus with me. I'll bring him back in a couple of days."

Azalea stood up, trying to persuade her. "Cecilia, don't stay at a hotel. There's plenty of room here. Stay for a couple of days. Thaddeus loves the food here."

Cecilia politely declined. "Mrs. Fields, my friends' kids are around Thaddeus's age. We've already planned for him to play with them."

Azalea frowned slightly and turned to Finn. "Has Daryl returned yet?"

"Not yet," Finn replied.

Azalea seemed annoyed. "He wasn't at the reception. Where did he go? Honestly!"

"Maybe there's something urgent at the company," Finn suggested, glancing at Cecilia.

"Today is his brother's big day. What could be so urgent it has to be done today?" Azalea complained.

Cecilia understood Azalea's intention. She wanted Daryl to persuade her to stay.

But Cecilia felt indifferent. Daryl was so cold towards her now; he probably had someone new in his life and didn't care about her anymore. Thinking about it made Cecilia feel suffocated.

Forcing a smile, Cecilia said, "Mrs. Fields, I'm leaving with Thaddeus now."

"I'll have the driver take you," Azalea quickly instructed Finn.

"No need, the cab is waiting outside," Cecilia replied.

Azalea had no choice but to relent.

She knew Cecilia's temperament. Since the divorce, Cecilia had refused any kindness from the Fields family.

Cecilia helped Thaddeus put on his coat, a black faux fur jacket with bear ears on the hood. He looked adorable, like a little black bear, making him even more endearing.

Cecilia carried Thaddeus out of the mansion, with Finn escorting them.

It was already winter, and the cold wind was biting. A cab was waiting at the mansion's entrance.

Finn handed Cecilia a tote bag and smiled. "Ms. Thorne, this has Thaddeus's bottle, diapers, and some clothes."

"Thanks, Finn," Cecilia smiled.
