Chapter 1339 Are You Declaring War on Me

Hearing Daryl's mocking tone, Cecilia couldn't help but frown.

In truth, Cecilia knew that Elijah's words were half unintentional and half an attempt to explain why Thaddeus was born nearly a month past his due date. After all, even if she calmly explained it to him, he wouldn't believe it.

"I'm just telling it like it is, no sugarcoating. Everything I'm saying is the truth!" Elijah said, meeting Daryl's cold gaze head-on.

At this moment, Elijah's eyes shone with determination and a clear conscience, showing no fear of Daryl's icy stare.

Cecilia couldn't help but feel a pang of anxiety for Daryl and Elijah, as she could see that Daryl was already angry.

"Daryl, Elijah, if you two start fighting again, I swear I can't take it anymore!" Azalea exclaimed, throwing down her fork in frustration.

Cecilia's heart skipped a beat at those words.

Although Azalea wasn't particularly kind to Cecilia, she didn't want any more trouble for the Fields family. In the year and a half she had been away, Azalea was the only elder left in the family. With her around, the two brothers could still sit at the same table for a meal. Without her, their conflicts would be much harder to resolve.

However, they were filial toward Azalea.. Seeing their mother upset, they both fell silent.

"Mom, it's all my fault. I won't argue with him anymore. Please, just eat," Elijah said, quickly picking up Azalea's fork and trying to appease her.

Daryl sat there, his face dark and silent.

"And you?" Azalea glanced at Daryl.

Daryl had always been stubborn since he was a child, though he had a kind heart. Elijah, on the other hand, was clever and sweet-talking, always winning Azalea's favor. But she knew her sons well and loved Daryl dearly, even if he wasn't as close to her as Elijah.

With a sigh, Daryl finally relented. "Mom, don't worry. I won't fight him anymore. Even if he hits me, I won't hit back."

As he said this, Daryl's eyes were fixed coldly on Elijah.

"You two never let me have a moment's peace," Azalea sighed, finally somewhat satisfied but still unhappy.

"I'm done. You all take your time," Daryl said, putting down his fork and getting up to leave.

As Daryl reached the dining room door, he saw Cecilia standing there. Their eyes met briefly before Daryl walked past her and left.

Cecilia's heart tightened inexplicably. She walked over to Elijah and said, "Elijah, give me Thaddeus."

"Sure," Elijah nodded, handing Thaddeus to Cecilia.

Cecilia sat quietly in a chair, feeding Thaddeus spoonfuls of custard, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.

By midnight, Cecilia had already put Thaddeus to sleep but found herself unable to rest.

Tossing and turning for what felt like forever, Cecilia finally got out of bed, wrapping herself in a robe.

She hadn't eaten much at dinner and had to breastfeed Thaddeus, so her stomach was empty. Cecilia figured she was probably hungry, which was why she couldn't sleep.

She quietly walked out of the bedroom, heading downstairs to the kitchen for something to eat.

As she passed the terrace, she noticed a shadow and a faint red glow.

Frowning, Cecilia wondered who would be on the terrace at this hour.

Curious, she stepped onto the terrace.

It was summer, but the weather wasn't too hot yet. The midnight breeze was still a bit chilly, making Cecilia shiver and sneeze.

The person standing by the railing turned around at the sound.

Cecilia saw Daryl, also in a gray robe, looking at her with deep eyes. He had a cigarette between his fingers, explaining the glow she had seen.

Seeing Daryl's face, Cecilia's heart tightened, and she instantly regretted coming to the terrace. She should have known it would be either Daryl or Elijah, or maybe Freya. The Fields family's servants never stayed in the main house at night.

Lowering her eyes, Cecilia turned to leave.

After all, there was nothing to say to him. Any conversation would lead to an argument, maybe even a fight. She had long given up hope that he would believe her explanations, so she wouldn't bother trying. It was all futile.

"Stop!" Daryl's voice came from behind just as Cecilia took a step.

She froze but didn't turn around, not wanting to face him.

After a long silence, Cecilia felt uneasy and was about to turn around when Daryl's angry voice came from behind.

"Are you doing this on purpose?"

Cecilia turned abruptly, seeing the hurt in Daryl's eyes under the starlight.

She had only ever seen Daryl's cold, distant gaze, never this kind of sadness. It shook her to the core.

Daryl was a strong, proud man who never showed his vulnerability. He would even hide his pain and sadness.

What was going on tonight? Cecilia was confused.

"What do you mean?" she asked, frowning in confusion.

Daryl looked away, his voice low. "Are you and Elijah using Thaddeus to challenge me? My mom dotes on her grandson, and you're using her to help you."

Cecilia was stunned.

"What are you talking about? I don't understand," she said, frowning.

Daryl stepped closer, and Cecilia looked up at him as he approached.

He was tall, and in her slippers, Cecilia felt even smaller, overwhelmed by his presence.

Daryl stared at her, a cold smile on his lips. "You, Elijah, and Thaddeus are a family. You're reminding me that I'm just an outsider, right?"

Cecilia's eyes narrowed.

Now she understood. Daryl was upset about how close Elijah and Thaddeus were at dinner.
