Chapter 351 Heartache

After bouncing outta Linda's office, Susan felt like she was in some kinda dream.

Outta nowhere, all her beefs got squashed, and Fiona and Elliott got what was coming to 'em. Fiona got the boot, and Susan even snagged a promotion. It seemed that karma's a real thing.

But Susan knew if it wasn't for Seb, she'd be the one getting canned and hauled off by the cops today.

Right now, Susan was still feeling mad grateful to Seb. Even though they had a falling out, she couldn't deny Seb had her back. If those charges had stuck, she'd be behind bars.

When Susan rolled back to Group Six, she saw her stuff already moved into Fiona's old office, while Fiona's junk was just dumped in the storage room.

Those female colleagues who used to give her the cold shoulder were now all enthusiastic. Susan couldn't help but shake her head at how people flip-flop.

But that's just how folks were, and Susan didn't hold it against her Group Six peeps. Fiona and Elliott were bad news, and they all had to work together moving forward. Team spirit was very important after all. Still, Susan was only gonna see them as work buddies, not real friends.

Susan checked out Fiona's stuff in the storage room. Even though Fiona tried to mess her up, Susan didn't wanna rub it in. So, she packed up Fiona's things, got her address, and shipped 'em to her.

Sitting at her new desk, looking around the project manager's office, Susan couldn't believe she scored this gig overnight.

She knew feeling all mushy was pointless; she had to bust her butt to prove she could handle the job.

Susan glanced at the phone on her desk, picked it up, and after a long pause, dialed Seb's number.

But right away, a voice said the user had turned off their phone.

Feeling stuck, Susan typed out a text and sent it.

Susan: [I'm back at Pioneer Accounting Firm. Thanks for the help.]

Susan spent ages tweaking this message, editing and deleting over and over. It either sounded too eager or too cold. In the end, she just sent those two lines.

Over an hour later, Susan got a reply from Seb.

Hearing the notification, Susan grabbed her phone. The message was just one line: [You're welcome.]

Susan stared at her phone for a long time, thinking the response was pretty chilly. Seemed like there was nothing left to say between them.

That night, Susan listened hard but didn't hear Seb come back. He didn't come back again.

The next morning, Susan's eyes were a bit puffy.

That morning, Susan took a document to Linda's office. It needed Linda's signature.

Just as Susan was about to knock, Linda's secretary, Hannah Reed, smiled and stood up. "Ms. Wilson, Linda's on vacation starting today. You'll have to wait till she gets back to handle any matters."

Hearing this, Susan frowned, looked down at the document in her arms, and asked, "When's Linda coming back? This document's kinda urgent."

Hannah grinned and said, "She asked the GM for three days off, but she's chilling with her boyfriend at Azure Haven. If they're having a blast, they might stay a few more days."

Hearing this, Susan couldn't help but frown. She thought, 'Linda's boyfriend, Seb?'

Even though Susan was puzzled, she didn't dig deeper. She forced a smile and said, "Got it. I'll swing by in a few days."

Hannah nodded, and Susan headed back to her office with the document.

Plopping the document on her desk, Susan had zero motivation to work.

Finally, when it was time to clock out, Susan made a beeline for Seb's villa.

As soon as Susan walked in, she saw Hayden glued to cartoons in the living room, Spring playing with toys on the floor, Kathy whipping up something in the kitchen, and Mary tidying up the place.

"Mommy's back?" Hayden greeted Susan.

"Mommy!" Spring clapped her hands, all excited.

Susan didn't have time to mind them. She wanted to ask Kathy and Mary but couldn't bring herself to do it.

So, Susan went straight upstairs with her bag.

When she got to Seb's bedroom, she saw the door was slightly open. She gently pushed it open.

Susan walked in slowly. The room was spotless and empty.

She walked to the closet, slid open the door, and glanced at the packed clothes inside.

For a moment, Susan couldn't tell if any of Seb's clothes were missing. She checked his toiletries but found no clues.

Susan sat on the bed, feeling bummed out.

Going on vacation to Azure Haven, where it's hot, he wouldn't need to pack much. As for toiletries, for someone like Seb who always stayed at luxury hotels, everything was already there. All he really needed was his card, no luggage required.

At dinner time, Susan came downstairs in her loungewear.

By then, Hayden and Spring were already at the dining table.

As soon as Susan sat down, Hayden piped up, "Mommy, Daddy went on a business trip today!"

Hearing this, Susan's hand holding the fork froze!

A business trip? Wasn't it a vacation?

"Really? Where'd he go?" Susan asked, putting some food on Hayden's plate.

Hayden rolled his eyes, thinking hard but couldn't remember.

"Azure Haven, right?" Susan didn't realize her tone was sour.

'A business trip? Just a lie for the kids,' Susan thought, silently cursing Seb.

"Yeah, Azure Haven!" Hayden nodded eagerly.

After that, Susan found the food tasteless and couldn't enjoy her meal.

Seb had gone on vacation with Linda. It seemed their relationship was moving fast.

Susan thought that since her issue was sorted, there was no need for her to stay at Seb's place any longer. She should bounce as soon as possible. Linda might move in right after their vacation.

After a night of tossing and turning, Susan, though reluctant to leave Hayden and Spring, resolutely moved out of Seb's villa.

Susan couldn't forget Hayden's sad eyes. Spring was too young to get it, but at least she could sleep with Susan every night. Hayden, though, could only be with her on weekends.

Even though Susan felt heartbroken, she had to do it. She was still clinging to protect her pitiful self-respect.
