Chapter 217 Farewell
Susan's abdominal wound kept getting infected due to postpartum weakness. After two debridement surgeries and over two weeks of anti-inflammatory treatment, it finally started to heal.
Susan and Spring spent forty days in the hospital before fully recovering and getting discharged. It was a tough time.
During those forty days, George visited daily to care for Susan and see Spring. He even hired a caregiver for Susan and had Serenity bring soup every day to help her recover.
Susan was incredibly grateful for George's help. Without him, she and Spring wouldn't have recovered so smoothly.
On the day of discharge, Susan held Spring, George drove, and Serenity carried Susan's luggage, making sure she got home safely.
George parked the Range Rover outside Susan's apartment. He looked up and asked, "You didn't tell her beforehand. Can Catherine handle this?"
Susan looked at Spring and sighed, "My mon has to accept it now. I don't know how to tell her. I just hope she won't be too upset when she sees Spring."
Susan's voice cracked. She had always been Catherine's pride, but her marriage had caused her mom a lot of stress. Now, she was bringing home a child born out of wedlock. She didn't know how Catherine would react.
"Want me to go up with you?" George asked, still concerned.
Susan shook her head. "My mom doesn't know you yet, it's not appropriate for you to come up now."
George didn't push it. He took a thick envelope from his pocket and placed it on Susan's lap.
Susan looked at the envelope, puzzled. "What's this?"
"Some cash. I know you're short on money right now, so this can help," George said with a smile.
Susan felt a wave of gratitude. George was so considerate, but she couldn't accept more help from him; she already owed him too much.
She pushed the envelope back. "No, I can't take your money. You've done enough for me."
George looked at Spring and said, "I'm giving it to my goddaughter. What if you can't afford to feed her?"
He tucked the envelope into Spring's cloak.
Susan couldn't decline. Struggling financially and uncertain about Catherine's response, she found herself compelled to accept George's assistance.
"Consider it a loan," Susan said, blushing.
"You'll have to pay interest," George joked.
Susan lowered her head and asked, "By the way, how much did our hospital stay cost? I need to know how much I owe you."
George hesitated before saying, "I didn't pay for your and Spring's hospital bills."
Susan was puzzled. "If it wasn't you, then who?"
Her mind raced to Seb, but now all she harbored towards him was a deep-seated loathing. The mere thought of him caused her heart to ache.If it weren't for Seb, she and Spring wouldn't have suffered so much. Those forty days in the hospital were pure torment, but they survived.
"It was Seb who paid," George said flatly.
Susan's suspicion was confirmed, and her emotions surged again.
George continued, "When I went to pay the bill, but the nurse said someone had already paid $200,000. I knew it had to be Seb."
Susan felt uncomfortable but said, "He's the reason all of this went down. It's only fair he foots the bill."
"Is there some misunderstanding between you and Seb? Why did he make you give birth to Spring early? What's the reason?" George asked, frowning.
"Because he's crazy. He's not normal," Susan said through gritted teeth.
George fell silent.
After a moment, Susan said, "I'm done discussing him. Let's just erase him from memory. Alright, I'm going up."
"Serenity, help Susan with her things," George said, glancing at Serenity in the back seat.
"Thank you," Susan said, holding Spring as she got out of the car.
George quickly got out and walked over to Susan. Still worried, he said, "If Catherine gets really angry, call me, and I'll come to get you."
Susan nodded.
Then, Susan and Serenity went upstairs together.
After more than half a year, Susan knocked on her home door.
In the few seconds waiting for Catherine to open the door, Susan felt very anxious. She didn't know how Catherine would react.
"Who is it?" Catherine's voice came, and the door opened.
When Catherine saw Susan, she was stunned for a moment, then immediately scolded, "You've been gone for more than half a year, and now you come back with a surprise visit. Are you trying to scare me to death?"
Holding Spring, Susan said, "Mom, I kept my promise and brought someone back. Look!"
Catherine noticed Spring in Susan's arms and the luggage behind her, filled with diapers, formula, a stroller, and other baby items.
Although puzzled, Catherine stepped forward to look at Spring.
Seeing the chubby little baby, Catherine immediately felt affection and smiled as she reached out to hold Spring.
Catherine smiled and said, "Susan, whose child did you bring back? Why did you bring the child's luggage too? Where are the parents? This child looks like she's just over a month old."
Seeing that Catherine liked Spring, Susan felt relieved and replied, "Mom, this child is mine!"
"What did you say?" Catherine was shocked.
