Chapter 494 Frightening Experience
Hearing Sophia's accusations, Amelia's face twisted with grief and anger. She shot back, "Mom, that man's over fifty! He's older than you, for crying out loud!"
Sophia sighed, stepped up, and grabbed Amelia's arm, her tone softening as she tried to sweet-talk her, "I know he's kinda old, but he's loaded. Marry him, and you'll be living the high life, spending cash like it's nothing, with servants at your beck and call. Isn't that better than busting your knees every day helping folks put on shoes?"
Behind the billboard, Susan and Isabella overheard the convo and exchanged a look. They both felt a deep disgust for Sophia. She was so desperate for cash, that she was willing to marry Amelia off to some old geezer. Sophia was seriously hitting rock bottom.
A moment later, Amelia's voice cracked with sobs. "Mom, that guy's got wrinkles and age spots all over his face. He grosses me out, and the first time we met, he tried to drag me to a hotel. How am I supposed to have a good life with him?"
By now, Sophia had lost her cool and snapped, "Haven't you been with old guys before? You're still hung up on Ethan, aren't you? Silly girl, Ethan's never gonna look at you again. He's rich now, surrounded by hot chicks. Even if you begged, he wouldn't care. You need to get over him!"
Sophia's words hit Amelia where it hurt, and she lost it, screaming, "How many times have I told you not to mention Ethan? I've long forgotten about him!"
"Good, if you've forgotten him, then come with me to talk about the marriage right now!" With that, Sophia yanked Amelia away.
"I'm not going! I don't wanna spend my life with some old geezer covered in age spots!" Amelia yelled.
In response, Sophia started beating and scolding her furiously. For a moment, cries and shouts filled the air.
Susan and Isabella exchanged a helpless glance, feeling there was no point in eavesdropping any longer, and turned to leave.
Just then, a loud crash echoed, followed by a gut-wrenching scream and the screech of car brakes!
The sound startled Susan and Isabella, and they instinctively looked towards the front of the billboard. They saw Amelia lying in a pool of blood.
Amelia had been hit by a car and was sprawled on the ground, blood everywhere, her shoes flung off. It was a horrifying sight. Susan and Isabella were shaking, never having seen someone in such a state after an accident before.
Sophia was sitting in front of Amelia, crying and wailing, but Amelia lay there with her eyes closed, unresponsive.
Onlookers gathered around, and the panicked driver got out of the car to call for an ambulance. The scene was pure chaos.
A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The medics quickly cleaned Amelia up and got ready to lift her into the ambulance. The driver, looking nervous, said, "Doc, I don't have much cash on me. Can you save her first?"
"Go get the money quickly," the ambulance driver said.
"I'm from out of town. I just came to Maple Valley for work. I don't have any money," the driver replied awkwardly.
At this point, Sophia grabbed the driver's collar and snarled, "You hit my daughter. You gotta pay for her medical bills. Cough up the cash now!"
"I really don't have any money," the driver said, looking like he was about to cry.
The ambulance driver glanced at them and said to Sophia, "Are you the family? You need to get the money fast, or her condition could get worse."
Hearing this, Sophia freaked out.
"I don't have any money either. What am I gonna do? Manager, can you advance my daughter's salary? It's life or death here," Sophia turned to beg Amelia's store manager, who had come out after hearing about the accident.
"Well, I can't make that call. I need to ask the boss. Why don't you go to the hospital with Amelia first? I'll talk to the boss and bring the money to the hospital. How's that?" The manager's eyes flickered, and he reluctantly agreed.
"Okay, okay, thank you. This is the city hospital's ambulance. Don't go to the wrong place," Sophia said, pleading, and then hopped into the ambulance.
The ambulance sped away, sirens blaring.
At this moment, a store clerk standing at the entrance of the brand-name store walked up to the manager and cautiously asked, "Manager, are you really gonna ask the boss to advance Amelia's salary?"
The manager frowned and replied, "Amelia's only been working here for a week. From the looks of her today, she might not make it. Who's gonna repay the advance? But she is pretty pitiful. I'll settle her wages for this week. You take it to the city hospital. I don't wanna her mom bug me."
With that, the manager turned and went back into the store.
After the manager left, the clerk shook her head and said, "What a cold world." Then she followed him inside.
Seeing this, Susan lowered her head and thought for a moment.
Beside her, Isabella clutched her chest and said, "That scared me to death. Do you think Amelia will be okay? I've heard that if a car accident knocks your shoes off, it's a bad sign!"
At this moment, Susan suddenly walked to an ATM a few dozen feet away, took out her card, and withdrew $20,000.
Seeing the money in Susan's hand, Isabella couldn't help but ask, "Why are you withdrawing so much cash all of a sudden?"
Just then, they saw the store clerk come out of the brand-name store with an envelope, presumably to deliver Amelia's wages for the week.
Susan quickly ran a few steps and called out to the clerk, "Hey, wait up!"
Hearing the voice, the clerk turned around, looked at Susan, and frowned. "Are you talking to me?"
Susan nodded. "Yeah, are you taking Amelia's wages to the hospital?"
"Yeah, why?" The clerk looked at Susan, confused.
"I can't go to the hospital right now. Could you please take this $20,000 to the hospital?" Susan handed the money to the clerk.
The clerk looked at the money in Susan's hand, then at Susan's face, and suddenly realized. "You're the customer who came to buy shoes earlier, right?"
"Yeah," Susan said, a bit embarrassed.
"But Amelia said you two had a conflict, didn't she?" the clerk asked tentatively.
Susan smiled and said, "We did have a conflict, but we go way back."
