Chapter 302 Evening Gown
In the Saturday morning rolls, Susan'd been glued to her computer, double-checking her budget proposal like it's the Holy Grail. She was convinced it was flawless, no room for improvement.
She peeked at the clock on the wall—almost noon. Isabella had gone to chat with her boss to get some scoop for Susan but was still MIA. With time ticking away, Susan started pacing the room like a caged tiger.
Right at noon, she heard a key turning in the lock. She practically lunged at the door and swinged it open.
Yep, it was Isabella.
"How’d it go?" Susan yanked Isabella inside, all anxious.
"Can I get some water first?" Isabella’s out of breath, looking like she just ran a marathon.
Susan spinned around, grabbed a glass, and filled it up. Isabella downed it in one go, like she’s been wandering the desert.
Then, Isabella pulled out an invitation from her bag and handed it to Susan.
She frowned at the sight of it. "What’s this?"
"Why don’t you take a look?" Isabella smirked, plopping down on the sofa and fanning herself with a handkerchief.
Susan opened the invite. It was for a charity gala tonight at the Hilton.
"Do you know how hard it was to get this? It’s my boss’s. He’s off on vacation with his wife tonight, so you lucked out!" Isabella said.
Susan’s eyes widened. "Wait, you mean Dominic Robinson, the Capgemini Software big shot, is gonna be there?"
"Yep!" Isabella nodded. "Bigwigs like him never show up in public. You need some serious connections to meet them. Tonight’s your shot. But heads up, his new wife’s gonna be there too. You’ll need to distract her."
"How the heck am I supposed to do that?" Susan was already stressing.
Susan’s eyes locked onto Isabella.
Isabella catched the look and got defensive. "You’re not thinking of using me, are you?"
"Isabella, you’re my only hope!" Susan grabbed her arm, pleading.
Isabella sighed. "Fine, fine. Just stop with the puppy eyes. I’m not a guy; I can’t handle it. I’m getting goosebumps!"
With Isabella on board, Susan jumped up. "By the way, I don’t have a dress for the gala. Can you lend me one?" She was already back at her computer, looking stuff up.
Isabella stood up, protesting. "Seriously? I just dropped a few grand on two evening gowns, and now you want one?"
"It’s just for one night. I’m not keeping it," Susan grinned, glancing at her.
"What are you looking up?" Isabella walked over, seeing Susan browsing photos online.
"I'm hunting down pics of Dominic. How else am I gonna spot him at the gala?" Susan said, eyes glued to her screen.
"Good call!" Isabella gave her a thumbs up.
Susan snagged a couple of Dominic's photos and saved them on her phone.
Isabella frowned. "Even if you find him and get a chance to chat, so what? He’s head over heels for his new wife. He probably wouldn’t care even if she was embezzling money. Plus, he might not even believe you!"
Susan frowned too, thinking hard. "This is my only shot. If he doesn’t believe me, I’m out of luck. But maybe he will. He’s got a son to think about, right?"
"Men these days only care about their own fun. They don’t give a damn about their kids. Isn’t your deadbeat dad the same?" Isabella sighed.
Susan felt a pang of discomfort. She’d been so wrapped up in this case that she hadn’t checked in with Catherine. She had no idea what was going on at home. James was probably still mooching off Catherine. With Dorothy and Henry’s drama, things were bound to get messier with James in the mix.
Seeing Susan’s gloomy face, Isabella quickly apologized. "I’m sorry."
Susan smiled generously. "It’s cool. We’re tight; no need to apologize."
"True that," Isabella chuckled.
Isabella then dragged Susan into the bedroom. She opened the wardrobe and pulled out an evening gown, holding it up against Susan.
She said, "I dropped over two grand on this baby and haven’t even worn it yet. You can rock it tonight!"
Susan took the gown and examined it, frowning. "I’m going there for business, not a beauty pageant. I don’t need to look this good. I’m not wearing it!"
The gown was a nude color, with silver sequins covering the important bits, giving it a slightly see-through vibe. It was sexy yet ethereal, the kind of dress celebs flaunt on the red carpet.
Seeing Susan shake her head, Isabella smiled and pulled out another gown, holding it up against herself. "How about this one?"
Susan looked closely. This time, Isabella was holding a red long gown. The shoulders were bare, but the rest was pretty modest.
Susan grabbed it from Isabella’s hands. "I’ll take this one!"
"Don’t regret it!" Isabella teased, flashing a mischievous smile.
Feeling something was off, Susan looked down at the gown in her hands. Sure enough, the back of the red gown was completely exposed. If she wasn’t careful, it would reveal her butt. Wearing it would definitely show off her curves of her hip.
