Chapter 193 I Am a Failure

Hearing Henry, Susan stared in shock.

She didn't expect Henry to know Dorothy so well. She felt like she didn't know Dorothy at all.

Henry continued, "Dorothy always blames others. It's never her fault."

Susan immediately defended Dorothy. "Henry, you can't talk about her like that. She's your wife!"

Henry stayed calm. "Susan, you'll see I'm right eventually."

Susan felt confused.

Remembering Dorothy's recent words, Susan realized Henry might be right; Dorothy had blamed her for everything.

"Henry, are you biased against Dorothy?" Susan still wanted to believe in Dorothy.

Henry sighed. "I know you won't believe me and will just blame me. Forget I said anything."

He looked defeated.

Susan knew she couldn't change Henry's mind and didn't agree with him either.

She said, "Dorothy's still recovering, and your daughter is young. Be more patient. I'll make my own judgment about Dorothy. You should go up; I'm leaving."

With that, Susan grabbed her suitcase and walked away quickly.

She didn't want to argue anymore. Whatever happened between Henry and Dorothy was out of her control. The best thing she could do was stay out of it.

After leaving, Susan didn't call a cab. She felt drained and wandered aimlessly until she found a bench by the street.

Staring at the calm lake, Susan felt like the past few years had been a dream.

She never knew what was coming next and was always blindsided by tough situations.

If she could do it all over, she wished she hadn't gone on that blind date with Henry. Maybe then Dorothy wouldn't have met Henry either and would still be happy in college.

If she could do it all over, she wouldn't have gotten drunk that night and wouldn't have gotten involved with Seb. Without meeting Seb, she might still be working at Prosperity Group. Even if not carefree, she wouldn't be so miserable now.

But nothing could be redone, and regret was pointless. Now her relationship with Seb was a mess, and she was almost enemies with Dorothy. Susan felt like a failure.

Love, career, family—she couldn't hold on to any of them. How did she end up like this?

Lost in thought, her phone rang.

It was George calling.

Seeing his number felt oddly comforting to Susan. She really needed some support right now; she was on the verge of breaking down.

"Hello?" Susan answered.

"Susan, Jessica told me you resigned. What's going on? You were doing great. Why'd you quit? And where are you? I can't find you anywhere in Lindell Harbor," George asked, rapid-firing questions.

Overwhelmed, Susan gave a general response, "Dorothy had a baby, and there's no one to help at home, so I came back to Maple Valley to take care of her."

George paused, then asked, "So, are you staying in Maple Valley for good? Not coming back to Lindell Harbor?"

Susan didn't know. "I haven't made any plans yet," she said with a bitter smile.

George laughed. "Take your time. Take care of Dorothy. In a few days, I'll treat you to dinner. Don't say no. I want to show you how I look in the clothes you bought me!"

"Alright," Susan replied faintly.

She had mailed the clothes to George, finally repaying a favor.

George sounded thrilled. "Great, see you then!"

"See you," Susan said, hanging up.

She sat on the bench for a while, calming down before heading home.

She didn't want Catherine to know about the argument with Dorothy, fearing she'd worry. Plus, it was embarrassing.

All afternoon, Susan forced a smile in front of Catherine.

When night fell and the house was quiet, Susan finally relaxed in her room.

Leaning against the locked door, she felt conflicted.

Life had to go on, and she had to keep moving. The next morning, she pulled herself together again.

"Susan, breakfast is ready!" Catherine called from the dining table.

"Coming," Susan replied, finishing up and heading out.

At the table, Susan's eyes widened at the spread. "Mom, what the important day is today?"

"You haven't eaten at home in so long, and I thought you missed my cooking!" Catherine said, rolling her eyes and placing a bowl of porridge in front of her.

"I knew you loved me the most," Susan said playfully, patting Catherine's hand.

"Just don't make me worry," Catherine said sternly, though she was smiling.

"I'll definitely listen to you from now on," Susan said sweetly and started eating.

"Susan, Dorothy's married with a child now. Don't you think it's time for you to find someone and get married too?" Catherine asked, looking at Susan.
