Chapter 383 She's Not Gonna Make It

Then, Susan spun around with this icy grin and shot a look at Seb, saying, "You really think I need to see her? What's her deal? Trying to rub it in my face or haunt me even after she's gone?"

Seb just hung his head and stayed quiet for what felt like forever.

Susan plopped down on the bed, fuming. After a bit, she cooled off and said, "She's on her last legs. If you wanna go see her, I won't stop you, but I'm not going."

Seb walked over, put a hand on her shoulder, and said, "Honestly, I haven't seen her at all in the past two years."

Susan's eyes went wide with surprise.

Cynthia's asthma had been getting worse since that last blow-up. Susan hadn't asked, but she figured Seb was still checking in on Cynthia. Even though Seb had beef with Cynthia, she had no other family. Seb had been footing the bill for her medical stuff and hired someone to look after her.

Seeing Susan's shocked face, Seb gave a bitter smile and said, "I didn't plan on ever seeing her again, but after the hospital called, I got all mixed up. We grew up together and were in love once, so I wanna see her one last time, just to close that chapter."

Susan heard Seb sigh. He hardly ever sighed, and she got what he was feeling right then.

"I'm just passing on her wish. I know you don't wanna go, so I won't push you," Seb added.

Looking up at Seb's face, all tangled with emotions, Susan knew he was being real. Even though his thoughts bugged her a bit, he wasn't hiding anything. He was laying it all out there, being straight with her.

The next moment, Susan grabbed the hand on her shoulder and softly said, "If you wanna go, go now. You'll kick yourself if you miss it."

"Okay." Seb nodded, gave her shoulder a light squeeze, and then hurried out.

After Seb left, Susan felt all jittery and went downstairs to hang with the kids.

Even after dinner and tucking Spring in, Susan still felt off.

Standing by the window, staring at the lights outside, Susan frowned.

"Mommy, what are you thinking about?" Suddenly, a tiny hand tugged at her pants.

Susan looked down to see Hayden staring up at her with big, round eyes.

She bent down, squatted in front of Hayden, patted his head, and smiled, asking, "Why aren't you asleep yet?"

"Why isn't Daddy back yet?" Hayden asked.

"He's got some stuff to handle. He'll probably be back real late," Susan replied.

Hayden nodded. "What's Daddy busy with? Can we help him?"

Hearing this, Susan smiled. "We can't help with what he's dealing with. Be a good kid, go wash up, and then hit the sack, okay?"

"Okay." Hayden nodded obediently and headed to the bathroom to wash up.

Watching Hayden's small, adorable figure, Susan felt a sense of comfort.

Hayden's words had stirred something in Susan's heart. She and Seb had already reunited. No matter what happened in the future, they would face it together.

And Cynthia's situation was something they should tackle together too. Susan figured she should be there for Seb through this emotional rollercoaster.

With that in mind, Susan whipped out her phone and dialed Seb's number.

When he picked up, his deep voice came through. "What's up?"

"I wanna go see her," Susan hesitated before saying.

Seb was clearly caught off guard but then said, "I'll have Leon come get you."

"Okay." Susan said just that and hung up.

Twenty minutes later, Leon showed up.

At midnight, the hospital was all lit up but felt cold and dead.

Walking through those chilly, sterile hallways, Susan felt uneasy.

She'd made up her mind that no matter what nasty stuff Cynthia might say on her deathbed, she wouldn't let it get to her.

Even though she still had beef with Cynthia over what happened to Hayden, Cynthia had already gotten her karma. What could be worse than dying alone? Plus, Cynthia was dying young, which was pretty tragic.

Leon led Susan to a ward, stopped, and knocked on the door.

Soon, the door opened, and Seb stepped out.

Seeing Seb's still serious face, Susan glanced inside and softly asked, "How is she?"

"I told her you agreed to see her. She's been holding on to her last breath," Seb replied, his face blank.

Hearing this, Susan frowned slightly and then stepped into the ward.

As soon as she walked in, the sight before her made her skin crawl.

On the bed lay a woman who was so thin she was unrecognizable, hooked up to all sorts of medical gadgets. Her eyes were hollow, her skin wrinkled, her hair a mess, and her limbs just lay there. She was already knocking on death's door.

Seeing this, Susan's nose suddenly felt a bit tingly.

Even though Cynthia was her enemy, seeing someone suffer like that, Susan couldn't bring herself to hate her anymore. Instead, she felt a wave of sadness.

Seeing Susan, Cynthia's eyes noticeably brightened, and she started to speak with difficulty. "You came after all."

It was clear Cynthia was happy to see her. Although Susan didn't know what Cynthia wanted, she knew Cynthia couldn't do anything now, so she took a couple of steps forward.

At that moment, Seb stepped past Susan, came to the bedside, and held Cynthia's hand. He said, "Susan's here. Say what you want to say."

Cynthia's gaze swept over Seb and then rested on Susan. With her last bit of strength, she said, "I'm sorry to you and to Hayden. Believe me, I didn't expect Hayden to get leukemia. Fortunately, he's recovered."

At this point, Cynthia seemed too tired and paused to catch her breath.

Susan had figured Cynthia probably wanted to confess, seeking some peace before leaving this world.

After a moment, Cynthia continued with difficulty, "I don't dare ask for your forgiveness, but I still want to apologize to you in person. Whether you forgive me or not doesn't matter."
