Chapter 1276 Goddaughter
"Maybe... Maybe it's someone important," Cecilia stammered.
Susan chimed in, "Alright, let her go. We don't want her mother-in-law getting all worked up."
"I'll be off then," Cecilia said apologetically, grabbing her bag and rushing out.
After Cecilia left, Isabella continued to complain, "Daryl's mom is something else. She finally lets Cecilia out for a bit, and then calls her back after just an hour!"
"Cecilia's got it rough. I can tell she's dealing with something she can't talk about. She must not be very happy living with the Fields family," Susan said, concerned.
Isabella thought for a moment and said, "Yeah, I get the feeling she's got some unspoken troubles."
"She chose this path, and it was never going to be easy. All we can do is hope things get better for her," Susan sighed.
"Yeah, when you choose someone, you choose everything that comes with them. I hope Cecilia can get through this soon," Isabella said, pursing her lips.
Cecilia went to several grocery stores before she finally found the pears and the local durians from Sylvanor.
Cecilia hurriedly carried the fruits into the mansion, where a maid quickly took them from her hands. "Mrs. Cecilia Fields, you're back. Mrs. Azalea Fields has been angry."
Hearing this, Cecilia's heart tightened. She glanced towards the living room and asked, "Who's the important guest today?"
"It's Mrs. Azalea Fields' goddaughter," the maid replied.
'Azalea has a goddaughter?' Cecilia thought. 'Azalea doesn't have a daughter, so this goddaughter must be someone special, someone who has really won her favor.'
Cecilia then walked into the living room.
"Skylar, I just adore you. I love chatting with you," Azalea, who was sitting on the sofa, said with a beaming smile to the young woman beside her.
"Godmother, we were meant to be," Skylar said sweetly, holding Azalea's hand.
As Cecilia walked into the living room and saw this scene, she was stunned.
Cecilia never imagined that the person sitting on the sofa, happily chatting with Azalea, would be Skylar.
Skylar was Azalea's goddaughter? Cecilia was completely taken aback.
At that moment, Cecilia's mind went blank.
She thought that after marrying Daryl, she wouldn't have any more interactions with Skylar. Even if they ran into each other, it would just be by chance at some event. She never expected to meet her again at the Fields mansion, and as Azalea's goddaughter, no less.
"Mrs. Azalea Fields, Mrs. Cecilia Fields is back," the maid said as she walked into the living room with the fruits Cecilia had bought.
Hearing this, Azalea looked up and saw Cecilia standing in the middle of the living room. She frowned and said, "Why did it take you so long to buy some fruit? Skylar has been waiting forever."
"Mom, you asked for local durians from Sylvanor. I had to go to several stores to find them," Cecilia quickly explained.
At this moment, Skylar looked up and met Cecilia's gaze.
Skylar's eyes briefly met Cecilia's, but she didn't acknowledge her. Instead, she turned her attention back to Azalea. "Godmother, I told you there was no need to go to such trouble."
"It's a rare occasion for you to visit. Of course, I want to treat you well," Azalea said with a smile, then turned to Cecilia and instructed, "Go to the kitchen and wash the durians and pears, then cut them into small pieces and bring them out!"
Cecilia wanted to greet Skylar, but Skylar didn't even look at her. Instead, she continued to chat happily with Azalea, as if no one else was there.
"Yes," Cecilia said, understanding the situation. She headed to the kitchen with the maid.
As Cecilia left the living room, Skylar smiled and said, "Godmother, you seem to be too harsh on Cecilia."
Skylar then subtly observed Azalea's expression.
Azalea glanced towards the kitchen and then whispered to Skylar, "You don't know, Daryl is completely under this woman's spell. He listens to her about everything. If I don't keep her in check, she'll turn everything upside down."
"Really?" Skylar's lips curled into a slight smile as she picked up a teacup and took a sip.
"Of course. She's just a girl from a humble background, with no real knowledge or manners. Unlike us, who come from respectable families, she's all about money and short-sighted. She'll never amount to anything. I'm worried she'll use Daryl to trample all over the Fields family!" Azalea said with concern.
Hearing this, Skylar smiled and said, "Godmother, they're already married. If she gives you a big, healthy grandson, I bet you won't care about anything else!"
Azalea scoffed, "Who cares about her having a child?"
But after saying that, Azalea suddenly frowned.
Seeing Azalea's change in expression, Skylar asked, "Godmother, what's wrong?"
Azalea replied, "It's been over three months since she married into our family. She and Daryl were probably already involved before the wedding. Why hasn't there been any news yet?"
Skylar laughed, "Godmother, you're too impatient."
"Impatient? I got pregnant in the first month after marrying Isaac. If a woman is young enough, it should happen right away!" Azalea said proudly.
Hearing this, Skylar lowered her head.
Seeing Skylar blush, Azalea quickly said, "My bad, talking so openly in front of an unmarried girl like you."
"Godmother, it's a new era now. People aren't so strict about these things," Skylar said smoothly.
"You're so understanding," Azalea praised Skylar, then sighed.
Skylar knew why Azalea sighed. Although she was also indignant, she had to continue playing the role of the understanding, kind-hearted person.
In the kitchen, Cecilia watched the maid cut the pears and durians into small pieces and stick toothpicks in them. Her mind was still reeling.
Azalea had made Skylar her goddaughter, and Cecilia had no idea. Seeing Skylar today was so awkward.
And Azalea seemed to really like Skylar. Would Skylar be visiting the Fields family often from now on?
Thinking about this gave Cecilia a headache.
Although she wasn't worried about Daryl and Skylar having anything between them, it was naturally inconvenient for two women who were once rivals to meet, especially since she and Skylar used to be friends.
