Chapter 71 Coming Prepared
Cynthia leisurely finished her coffee just as Carol stepped out of the house, looking all dolled up.
Seeing her, Cynthia stood up and grinned. "Carol, it's been ages, and you still look so young and gorgeous!"
Carol was a bit taken aback but quickly pulled herself together.
Cynthia placed the gift she brought on the stone table and smiled. "I brought these back from Averlake. Hope you like them."
Carol didn't really care about the gifts and said, "I didn't expect you to remember me after all these years."
"You're Seb's mom. Of course, I remember you," Cynthia said calmly.
At the mention of Seb, Carol sneered. "You said you came from Maple Valley, so I guess you've seen Seb already?"
"Yep," Cynthia nodded.
"Then you must know Seb's married now, and Susan's pregnant. He's about to be a dad," Carol said, watching Cynthia closely.
"Seb told me everything," Cynthia nodded again.
Carol was a bit surprised. "Since you know, why are you here to see me?"
Cynthia smiled and, without rushing, took a photo from her bag and placed it in front of Carol. She looked Carol in the eye and said, "I found this old photo while cleaning up my house after returning, so I wanted to bring it to you personally."
Carol didn't think much of it at first, but a glance at the photo left her stunned.
She picked up the photo, looked at it repeatedly, and finally couldn't contain her anger. She turned and shouted, "Laura, I suddenly want some cherries. Go to the supermarket in the south and buy some!"
"Got it," Laura, who was sweeping the yard, quickly grabbed her bag and left.
Seeing Carol's reaction to send Laura away, Cynthia knew she was halfway to success and smiled slightly.
After Laura left, Carol angrily tore the photo to pieces.
Cynthia couldn't help but laugh. "Carol, I have the negatives of this photo. You can't tear them all."
"How did you get this photo?" Carol asked in a low voice.
Cynthia smiled and reminisced. "I remember I hadn't graduated from college then. Seb and I were supposed to go on a picnic, but I got my period and couldn't go. Seb stayed in the house reading, and I was taking pictures of the sycamore tree outside the window. Suddenly, the gate opened, and you walked in with a man. You quickly closed the gate, and the man started kissing you passionately."
"Stop it!" Carol's previously domineering face turned pale.
But Cynthia continued, "I remember Todd was supposed to be at a meeting that day, and you thought Seb and I were on a picnic and wouldn't be back all day. You and that man couldn't wait and started undressing as you entered the house."
"Shut up!" Carol suddenly exploded, then seemed a bit dizzy and held her head with her hand.
Cynthia paused and then added, "Seb saw your actions with that man from the window and was furious. After all, we shouldn't air our dirty laundry in public. He told me to stay inside and not come out, and I had to listen to him since we had to get along in the future."
Carol's face lost its arrogance, aging visibly. Despite this, her seasoned demeanor quickly returned as she sneered, "Cynthia, what do you want?"
"What could I want? My heart has always been with the Anderson family. I just want to be with Seb. If it weren't for the sudden misfortune in my family back then, my child with Seb would probably be calling you grandma by now!" Cynthia didn't answer directly but made her intentions clear.
"But Seb is already married..."
Carol had just started when Cynthia interrupted, "He doesn't love Susan. He loves me!"
"Fine, if you can get him to divorce and marry you, I won't interfere. I'll even sincerely accept you and throw you a grand wedding," Carol said.
To Carol, it didn't matter whether Seb married Cynthia or Susan; she was dissatisfied with both women.
But Carol underestimated Cynthia. Cynthia then smiled and said, "Just not interfering isn't enough. I need your support to help me drive Susan out of the Anderson family and make Seb completely give up on her!"
Hearing this, Carol frowned. "This is your relationship issue. How can I interfere and help you?"
Cynthia's eyes darkened, and she looked away. "I know you can find a way. I'll give you a week. If you can't come up with a solution, I'll send this photo to the local tabloids, and you'll become even more famous in the central district!"
With that, Cynthia stood up and prepared to leave.
"This is outright robbery!" Carol said angrily.
Cynthia paused and, with her back to Carol, said, "To be with Seb, I can't care about much else."
Carol sneered, "You're still too naive. With my power, crushing you is as easy as stepping on an ant. Do you think you can really threaten me?"
Cynthia turned to meet Carol's sharp gaze and said, "Carol, I came prepared. The house I'm staying in at Maple Valley is under Seb's name, and our relationship is stable. If anything happens to me, do you think he would stand by and do nothing?"
"You're using Seb to threaten me?" Carol stood up abruptly.
Cynthia immediately smiled. "Carol, after all these years, your relationship with Seb is probably just for appearances. Seb is your only son. Do you want to completely sever ties with him?"
Cynthia's words hit Carol hard, causing her to slump onto the stone bench as if hit by a thunderbolt.
Seeing Carol about to compromise, Cynthia approached, her attitude becoming much more respectful. She gently patted Carol's shoulder and said, "Carol, I mean no harm. I just love Seb too much. If I can marry Seb, I will definitely be filial to you and persuade Seb to mend your relationship."
"Remember what you said today," Carol, being smart, knew this meant their deal was struck.
"If I break my promise, may I die a horrible death!" Cynthia immediately said.
"After it's done, make sure to destroy all the negatives," Carol said, staring at Cynthia.
"Don't worry, I will," Cynthia nodded.
