Chapter 94 Seizing the Opportunity
"Really? Isn't this just giving you guys a chance?" Isabella said with a mischievous smile.
"What are you talking about? Hand over your phone," Susan demanded, reaching for it.
Isabella pulled out her phone but waved it teasingly. "Gonna call George?"
"Yeah, my phone's with him, and he can't reach me!" Susan replied.
"Be careful when you call," Isabella said, finally handing it over.
"What do you mean?" Susan asked, confused.
"Are you dumb? It's almost ten. If you call now, his wife or girlfriend might think you're his mistress!" Isabella laughed.
Susan hesitated. She knew George wasn't married but was unsure about a girlfriend.
Worried, she decided to call her own number. No misunderstandings that way.
The phone rang for ages with no answer.
Susan started to panic. Maybe her phone wasn't in George's car. If it was lost outside, it was gone for good.
She called several times. Just as she was about to give up, someone answered!
"Hello?" A weak, hoarse voice said.
Recognizing it, Susan asked, "Mr. Anderson, what's wrong?"
"I have a fever," George replied, sounding awful.
"Haven't you taken any medicine?" Susan asked urgently.
"I don't have any at home," he replied weakly.
Susan was stunned. "Are you home alone?"
"Yeah," George sighed.
In a rush, Susan said, "Send me your address. I'll bring you some medicine!"
"No need," George mumbled, half-conscious.
"You'll get worse if you don't. Send me your address now!" Susan insisted.
"Okay," George finally agreed and sent his location.
"I'll knock soon. Make sure you open the door!" Susan shouted before hanging up.
She quickly got dressed and put on her shoes.
"Are you really going?" Isabella asked, worried.
"He's got a high fever, no one at home, and no medicine. If I don't bring him some, he might get seriously ill," Susan said, frowning.
"But it's late, and it's pouring outside. You don't even have a car!" Isabella said, looking at the dark, rainy night.
"The grocery owner's husband downstairs drives a taxi. I'll ask him for a ride," Susan said, grabbing some fever, cold, and stomach medicine before heading out.
"I'll go with you. You can't go alone," Isabella insisted, reaching for her coat.
"No, you've been working overtime a lot. You need to rest. I don't know how long this will take. I'll call you when I get there," Susan said, pushing Isabella back inside. She grabbed an umbrella and headed out.
Braving the storm, Susan convinced the lady boss downstairs to have her husband drive her.
By the time she reached George's door, she was almost completely soaked. The wind and rain made the umbrella useless.
Susan rang the doorbell continuously until a feverish and groggy George finally answered.
"You're here?" George said, leaning against the wall with his eyes closed.
Seeing his condition, Susan quickly helped him to bed. His forehead was burning hot, and the thermometer read 103.1°F. She wanted to give him fever medicine but realized there was no water.
She went to the kitchen, boiled some water, mixed it with cold water, and gave George the medicine. She covered him with a blanket to help him sweat it out.
After all the fuss, Susan was drenched in sweat herself.
Looking down at her wet clothes, she had no choice but to use George's bathroom for a quick shower, despite the awkwardness.
She had already checked the house and found no signs of another woman. Otherwise, she wouldn't know how to explain herself if George's girlfriend showed up.
Susan took the quickest shower possible and, having no clothes to change into, borrowed one of George's shirts.
Seeing George frowning in his sleep, she felt his forehead again. It was still hot, but he had started to sweat.
She glanced at the clock; it was already past midnight. She wouldn't be able to get a cab back, and the storm was still raging. Plus, she didn't feel comfortable leaving George alone in his condition.
After some hesitation, Susan decided to stay the night.
With a guest room and a study available, she didn't feel right sleeping in George's bed without his permission, so she settled for the couch instead.
Just as she was about to lie down, Susan remembered she hadn't called Isabella to let her know she was safe.
She had seen her phone on the coffee table earlier, which George must have retrieved from the car.
Susan quickly dialed Isabella's number. As soon as the call connected, Isabella started yelling.
"Finally! I was about to call the police!"
"Sorry, I got busy and forgot," Susan apologized.
Isabella paused, then changed her tone. "Busy with what? It doesn't take two hours to give someone fever medicine. Spill it, what were you really doing?"
Annoyed by Isabella's teasing, Susan replied, "What else could I be doing? It was pouring outside, and I got soaked. I just took a shower."
Isabella burst into laughter. "A shower, huh? Makes things more convenient, doesn't it?"
"Can you be serious for once?" Susan snapped.
"But seriously, this is a great chance to win George over. If you're interested, you should seize the opportunity!" Isabella said, suddenly serious.
"Cut it out. I'm going to sleep. Goodnight!" Susan said, hanging up.
Susan checked on George one more time to make sure he hadn't kicked off the blanket, then returned to the couch to sleep.
