Chapter 631 I Don't Love Her
At this moment, Maria was overjoyed and couldn't hear a word Isabella was saying.
So, Maria said to Isabella, "Isabella, the wedding is already set. You and Susan are my closest friends, and I hope you both can attend."
"But..." Isabella wanted to say something more.
Susan stopped her because she could see that Maria was deeply in love with George. Asking Maria to give up now was like asking for the impossible.
Then, Susan said, "Maria, after all, marriage is a big deal in life, especially for us women. It's about our happiness for the rest of our lives. Isabella cares about you and wants you to be absolutely sure."
"I understand, but I've already made up my mind," Maria said, unable to hide the happiness on her face.
Seeing this, Susan smiled and said, "We'll definitely be at the wedding."
"Thank you, Susan and Isabella. Oh, there's one more thing I need to tell you. I've decided to quit my job after the wedding. I know you're both recovering right now, so I won't leave immediately. I'll wait until you're both back on your feet." Maria said, a bit embarrassed.
"That's very considerate of you. Thanks for your understanding," Susan nodded.
She understood the real reason behind Maria's decision. Facing the woman George loved every day would be unbearable. Susan was glad Maria was thinking of them and the firm, willing to stay on a little longer.
"Oh, getting married in three days is a bit rushed. I've scheduled an appointment with George to try on wedding dresses, so I have to go now. I wish you both a speedy recovery," Maria said before leaving the ward.
After Maria left, Isabella finally started to complain, "Do you think she's lost her mind? She knows George loves you and is heartbroken, yet she still wants to marry him willingly. Isn't she being foolish?"
"The power of love is great; it can make people disregard life and death. Isn't George foolish? Am I not foolish? Aren't Leon and you foolish? We only see Maria but not ourselves," Susan said with a sigh.
"Hey, how did this suddenly become about me? You and Seb are foolish, but Leon and I are not like you. We're just enemies!" Isabella quickly clarified.
Susan wasn't in the mood to argue with Isabella. After hesitating for a moment, she got out of bed and said, "No, I need to go find George!"
"What are you going to George for?" Isabella asked anxiously.
"Maria is determined to marry him, and no one can dissuade her. I can only try to persuade George. I don't want them to end up like Dorothy and Henry," Susan replied.
Hearing this, Isabella understood what Susan meant.
Back then, Dorothy had a crush on Henry and ended up getting pregnant before marriage.
Susan, feeling obligated as her sister, had intervened, ultimately pushing Henry into marrying Dorothy. At the time, Dorothy had been overjoyed, her feelings mirroring Maria's current state.
But what happened after Dorothy married Henry? Henry was a good man and treated Dorothy well, but they eventually became enemies, both deeply hurt by the marriage, and even Amanda suffered a lot.
Dorothy and Henry's marriage ended in divorce, and Dorothy has been depressed and silent ever since.
Isabella knew that Susan had always felt guilty about this. If she hadn't stood up for Dorothy back then, maybe Dorothy and Henry wouldn't have gone through such a painful marriage.
Today's situation with Maria and George was a repeat of the past, and Susan certainly didn't want their marriage to end in tragedy like Dorothy and Henry's. After all, a marriage without love can't withstand any test.
Isabella then frowned and said, "Given the current situation, it's not a good idea for you to meet George alone."
Hearing this, Susan paused and then slowly sat back on the bed.
Indeed, if she went to persuade George not to marry Maria, not only Seb but even Maria might misunderstand her intentions. It could make things worse.
Isabella continued, "Why don't you just call George? If you can persuade him, great. If not, there's nothing you can do. After all, whether to marry and whom to marry is his own business, right?"
Hearing this, Susan smiled and said, "You're right. I'll just call George."
Then, Susan took her phone and walked to the window. She stared at her phone for a while, took a deep breath, and then dialed George's number.
To be honest, she never thought she would contact George again so soon after saying she wouldn't see him anymore.
The call was quickly answered.
"Susan?" George's voice came from the other end.
"George, I have something to say to you. Is it convenient for you to talk now?" Hearing George's voice, Susan could almost imagine his melancholic eyes.
"If you want to talk about my marriage with Maria, I don't think it's necessary," George said firmly.
Susan knew George wouldn't be easily persuaded, so despite his words, she insisted, "George, listen to me. You don't love Maria at all, but she is deeply in love with you. If you marry her and can't give her your whole heart, you'll both be miserable, just like Dorothy and Henry..."
"Susan, I made it clear to Maria when I proposed. Maria doesn't mind," George interrupted.
Hearing this, Susan was a bit confused. "What did you tell Maria? What doesn't she mind?"
"I told Maria that I don't love her and probably never will. But I need a marriage and a wife right now, so I want to marry someone. She said she was willing to be my wife, so we decided to get married," George said calmly, as if he were talking about something that had nothing to do with him.
