Chapter 121 The Smell of Gunpowder

In the morning, Susan texted Isabella, asking her to come over during lunch since the hospital was close to Prosperity Group.

At noon, while Susan was eating, Isabella burst into the ward.

"Susan, what happened? Where are you hurt?" Isabella looked her over, relieved to see only some swelling on her face.

Susan then started typing on her phone.

"Why aren't you talking?" Isabella asked, confused.

Susan handed her the phone. Isabella read the message and frowned.

[Isabella, my eardrum is damaged, and I'm temporarily deaf. We have to text.]

[How did this happen?] Isabella typed back.

[I'll explain later. First, call my mom and tell her I'm on a sudden business trip abroad and can't be reached. I'll contact her when I get back.] Susan looked at Isabella.

[Okay, I'll call her now.] Isabella quickly called Catherine.

Catherine had called several times today, but Susan didn't answer, fearing Catherine would panic. Instead, she asked Isabella for help.

After the call, Isabella sat down to hear what happened. Susan explained everything.

Isabella was furious. "That Vivian Rogers is such a jerk! And George just stood there watching!"

Realizing Susan couldn't hear her, Isabella started typing again.

[Why didn't you call the police? Even if her family are lawyers, your injuries are serious enough.]

Susan reluctantly replied: [George didn't know. He's helped me a lot. If my ear heals quickly, I don't want to pursue it.]

She knew reporting it might lead to more rumors about her and George. It was better to leave their law firm and never see them again.

[Even so, you should get compensation from Vivian Rogers if your ear recovers quickly.] Isabella typed.

Time flew by, and soon Isabella left.

Alone in the empty ward, Susan felt anxious.

She rubbed her ear but still couldn't hear. She clapped her hands but felt no sound.

Susan panicked. What if she stayed deaf?

Thinking about it, she fell asleep and didn't wake up until dusk.

Usually, she worked hard and studied for her CPA exams after work. When had she ever taken an afternoon nap? 'Being deaf meant no one could disturb my sleep.' she mocked herself inwardly.

As night fell, Seb still hadn't shown up.

Susan sat on the bed, hugging her knees. The ward was dark, and the faint light from outside cast shadows, making it hard to see clearly.

She felt incredibly lonely, staring blankly at the flickering lights outside.

Suddenly, the ward lights turned on, hurting her eyes. She quickly shielded them with her hand.

When her eyes adjusted, she saw Seb standing by her bed, holding two lunch boxes. He stared at her with his dark eyes, not saying a word—not that she could hear him anyway.

Susan wanted to throw herself into Seb's arms, but she knew she couldn't. Seb wasn't hers. Thinking of Cynthia, her heart ached.

Even though she felt lonely, she couldn't seek temporary comfort. Seb was like a drug, and she couldn't afford to get addicted.

Suddenly, a warm hand touched her head.

A warm current flowed from her head to her toes, making her feel electrified.

Susan hated this feeling. Seb could always make her surrender with just one gesture.

She quickly grabbed her phone, breaking contact with Seb's hand, and typed a message.

[When did you get here?]

[A few minutes ago.] Seb replied on his phone.

Susan couldn't hear the door or footsteps. She only knew Seb was there when he turned on the light.

Her mind raced. Had Seb seen her curled up on the bed? Was that why he touched her head? Was he pitying her?

Her pride made her uncomfortable. She didn't want Seb's sympathy. What she wanted, Seb couldn't give her.

[I bought your favorite food.] Seb typed, placing the lunch boxes on the bedside table.

Seb still remembered her favorite food. Susan frowned slightly.

Seeing the two lunch boxes and utensils, she knew Seb intended to stay and eat with her.

Despite feeling touched, she didn't want any deeper interactions with him.

She pretended to be oblivious and typed a message.

[I know you're busy with work and social engagements. You don't need to come here anymore. My condition is stable, and I can be discharged in a few days.]

Seb frowned deeply but controlled his temper.

[What do you mean by that?] he quickly typed.

[Nothing, I just don't want to trouble you.] Susan sensed Seb was about to get angry.

Sure enough, his next message was full of anger.

[You don't want to trouble me? Who do you want to trouble, George? His girlfriend is back, and he loves Vivian. Maybe he showed some interest in you, but that was just a passing fancy. You should know George has flirted with many women when Vivian wasn't around. Do you also want to be one of his playthings?]
