Chapter 195 Please Keep Her
Susan was just trying to bug Seb, but deep down, she was hurting. How did she end up with so many bad guys over the years?
Seb slipped a hand into his pocket, his dark eyes locked on Susan. "Even if they all love you, so what? You can't love them. You can't forget me."
His words, though cocky, hit a nerve.
She didn't want to argue anymore and rolled her eyes. "You're so full of yourself!"
She turned to leave, but Seb gently grabbed her arm.
Susan frowned. Seb seemed different today. Still bossy, but less arrogant, with a hint of sadness in his eyes that tugged at her heart.
Seb's voice softened, almost pleading. "Susan, this child is a gift from God to us. Please keep her!"
Looking at the man who had hurt her so much, Susan brushed his hand away. "Seb, this child is a gift to me. It has nothing to do with you. Stop talking about 'us.'"
Seb frowned slightly, then looked at the distant river. "No matter what you say, I'm the child's father. You can't change that."
"My biological father means nothing to me now," Susan snapped.
"I'm not here to argue about the child's paternity. I'm just reminding you that our last child died. This time, I hope you can safely give birth to make up for that loss," Seb said calmly.
At the mention of the lost child, Susan's eyes welled up.
That child was a permanent scar. If he were alive, he'd be calling her "mom" by now.
Seb's words hit home. Thinking of the lost child, her maternal instincts overwhelmed her worries. She couldn't give up this child. No matter what, she was determined to have it.
Seeing Susan's sadness, a trace of pity flashed in Seb's eyes but quickly vanished.
He looked at her seriously. "If you want this child, I'll support you."
Susan sneered. "What support? A house? Money? Seb, don't be so arrogant. I can do this on my own!"
Seb probably expected her refusal, so he didn't argue. "You're emotional. Go home and calm down. I'll check on you in a few days."
With that, Seb, in his white shirt, walked away.
Watching him leave, Susan felt her strength fading. She stumbled to a bench and sat down.
Touching her flat stomach, she found it hard to believe a small life was growing inside her.
She felt its presence and became even more determined to keep the child.
Suddenly, the mental pressure felt too much. She needed to let go of these burdens.
From now on, Susan decided to focus solely on having this baby. That would be her greatest joy.
This child was her future hope. With the baby, she wouldn't be lonely and had something to strive for.
Who cared what others thought? So what if she became a single mom? She could raise the child on her own and do a great job.
As for Seb, no matter how powerful he was, he couldn't take her child away.
With her mind made up, Susan stood up with new confidence and headed home.
As soon as she walked in, Catherine started scolding her.
"Susan, where did you go? Why didn't you turn off the faucet? The bathroom and living room were flooded when I got back from grocery shopping!"
Susan saw the living room was cleaned up, but water was still flowing in the bathroom.
She slapped her forehead. She had forgotten to turn off the faucet, wasting a lot of water.
Seeing Catherine mopping up, Susan quickly took the mop from her and joked, "Mom, we should've bought some fish for the house."
Catherine laughed, and Susan chuckled too.
But then Catherine got serious again. "Be more careful next time. This month's water bill will be sky-high!"
"Mom, I'll give you $200 later, enough to cover a year's water bills," Susan said with a smile.
"Always talking back!" Catherine muttered, heading to the kitchen to cook.
After mopping up the water, Susan suddenly felt nauseous. She rushed to the bathroom and vomited.
After rinsing her mouth, she looked at her pale reflection in the mirror and thought, 'My pregnancy symptoms are getting worse. I need to leave home soon.'
Catherine was conservative. Dorothy's out-of-wedlock pregnancy had already angered her, though she was relieved when Dorothy and Henry got married.
If she found out Susan was also pregnant out of wedlock, she'd be furious, especially since she couldn't name the father. Catherine would definitely insist on an abortion, knowing she and Seb would never marry.
No, she had to leave quickly and not let Catherine find out.
She had promised to spend more time with Catherine, but now she'd have to break that promise. Susan felt guilty.
Instead of feeling guilty, she decided to do something practical before leaving.
She opened the bathroom door and went to the kitchen to help Catherine cook.
"Mom, I'll take you to the mall this afternoon to buy some clothes," Susan said, trying to please her.
"I have enough clothes. Don't waste money," Catherine said, though she was clearly pleased.
"It's not wasting money. It's my duty! And there are some nice spots near Maple Valley. Let's go for a walk tomorrow," Susan said with a smile.
"I'll be happy if you just spend a few days with me. We don't need to go out and spend money," Catherine still refused.
