Chapter 472 Criticism
When Susan rolled up to the hospital, she nudged the door open and spotted Seb and Carol hanging out, with Todd already sitting up.
"Hello, Dad, Mom," Susan said as she strolled in.
"Susan's here," Todd grinned.
Carol, though, just huffed. "Todd's in the hospital 'cause of you. Nice of you to show up now that it's dark!"
Susan just hung her head, not even trying to argue. Going toe-to-toe with Carol was like banging your head against a wall.
Seb jumped in, "Mom, Susan was here all night with Dad. I told her to go home and get some rest."
Carol was about to pop off again when there was a knock at the door.
Susan, being closest, went to open it.
She was surprised to see who it was. "Mom, what are you doing here?"
Standing there was a woman in her fifties, dressed simply but neatly, holding a fancy fruit basket. She had this classy vibe, even with her age.
Catherine quickly said, "I couldn't reach you, so I called your house. Mary told me Mr. Todd Anderson got hit by a car and was in the hospital, so I rushed over!"
Susan pulled out her phone from her bag and saw it was dead. No wonder Catherine couldn't get through.
"Mom, come on in," Seb stepped up to welcome Catherine.
Catherine saw Todd sitting up and put the fruit basket down with a smile.
Todd smiled back, "Ms. Taylor, thanks for coming to see me."
Catherine replied, "Mr. Anderson, I'm glad to see you're okay. I was worried it was serious."
"It's just a scratch," Todd said, motioning for Seb to get Catherine a chair.
"Mom, have a seat," Seb placed a chair for Catherine.
Catherine sat down and noticed Carol by the bed.
"This must be Mrs. Carol Anderson?" Catherine asked, a bit nervously, seeing Carol's icy look.
Carol gave Catherine's plain outfit a once-over but didn't say anything.
Susan felt super awkward and was about to say something when Todd spoke up.
"Carol, Ms. Taylor's talking to you," Todd nudged.
Carol finally looked up, grudgingly saying, "You do have to see Todd. If it wasn't for Susan, he wouldn't have been hit by a car!"
Catherine was taken aback.
"Mom!" Seb called out.
Todd's face darkened. "Carol, Ms. Taylor's a guest. Don't talk like that."
Carol raised an eyebrow, eyes sharp. "Am I wrong? If Susan hadn't argued with me and threatened to leave, you wouldn't have chased after her. And if you hadn't chased after her, you wouldn't have been hit!"
Catherine turned to Susan, "Susan, is that true?"
"Mom, she's always picking on me. I didn't mean to argue with her," Susan said, feeling totally wronged. She couldn't believe Carol was calling her out in front of Catherine, and it made her furious.
She hadn't wanted Catherine to know about her messy situation, but since Carol had already spilled the beans, there was no point in hiding it anymore.
Hearing Susan's words, Catherine raised her hand and slapped Susan hard across the face!
The slap echoed through the ward.
Everyone was stunned.
Even Carol, not to mention Todd and Seb, didn't expect Catherine to slap Susan so hard and loudly in public.
Susan touched her burning cheek, her eyes welling up with tears, but she held them back, not wanting to cry in front of Carol.
Covering her face, Susan asked Catherine with infinite grievance, "Mom, why did you hit me?"
Catherine, furious, scolded, "How did I raise you? How could you talk back to your mother-in-law? And you even dared to argue with her. Now she says we have no manners, and I, as your mother, have lost face. Do you think you were wrong?"
Susan stared at Catherine in disbelief. She never expected Catherine to side with Carol and even slap her in public. All the grievances of the past few days surged in her heart, and she trembled all over.
Seeing this, Seb quickly stepped forward and hugged Susan.
Leaning in Seb's arms, Susan felt a little better.
At this moment, Carol glanced at Susan and said coldly, "If you want to discipline your daughter, do it at home. Todd is still injured and can't handle you making a scene here."
Catherine quickly said to Carol in a good-natured tone, "Mrs. Carol Anderson, it's Susan's fault for being immature. I didn't raise her well. Please don't hold it against her. I'll make sure she apologizes to you another day!"
Hearing this, Susan wanted to step forward and say she wasn't wrong.
But Seb, holding her, wouldn't let her and signaled her not to say anything more.
"She apologizes to me? Hmph, that'll be the day the sun rises in the west. Your daughter is very stubborn and doesn't listen to anyone. I think you should take her back and educate her properly before sending her to our Anderson family!" Carol said sharply.
At this moment, Catherine smiled faintly and said, "Mrs. Carol Anderson, Susan is already married into the Anderson family. She's part of your family. She has nothing to do with us anymore!"
Catherine's words, though gentle, effectively silenced Carol. Carol opened her mouth to speak but found herself at a loss for words.
Seb's lips curled up slightly at this.
But Susan, hearing these words, couldn't hold back her tears any longer. She found it hard to accept that Catherine would say such things, severing ties so cleanly.
At this moment, Todd quickly tried to smooth things over, "Ms. Taylor, you're right. Susan is part of our family, and we will take full responsibility for her."
"Todd, we're talking here. Why are you interrupting?" Carol glared at Todd, clearly displeased with his words.
