Chapter 534 Inquiry

Susan was helping Kathy clean up the mess when she spotted Seb strutting down the stairs in a fancy cashmere coat.

"Where you headed this late?" Susan asked, moving closer.

Seb, clearly in a mood, shot back, "Gonna see Mom."

Without waiting for a reply, he turned on his heel and stormed out of the villa.

Seeing Seb all down in the dumps, Susan felt a wave of worry wash over her, knowing this was gonna stir up some serious drama.

"Mrs. Susan Anderson, don't stress. Mr. Todd Anderson and Mrs. Carol Anderson have had their fair share of blowouts, but they never ended up splitting. I bet this time's no different," Kathy tried to reassure her.

Susan glanced at Kathy, realizing she didn't get the full picture.

In the past, they probably didn't divorce 'cause Todd thought the marriage was still tolerable, or maybe he hadn't found the right one yet. If he ever did, a divorce would be a done deal.

Thinking about it made Susan anxious, hoping things wouldn't go south.

Seb didn't roll back in until close to midnight.

When he finally got home, he didn't even bother with a shower, just crashed straight into bed.

Seeing how beat Seb looked, Susan couldn't help but ask, "How's Mom?"

"She's super upset. She's never been treated like this before," Seb replied, sounding a bit snappy.

"So, what's the plan?" Susan probed.

"What can we do? If we can stop it, we will. If not, we're outta luck," Seb said, closing his eyes.

Seeing how troubled he was, Susan didn't push it. But that night, neither of them got much sleep, tossing and turning.

The next morning, Seb was up early, heading to work.

Susan left the house at her usual time but didn't head straight to the office. Instead, she made a beeline for Dorothy's place to find Catherine and get the lowdown.

After ringing the doorbell twice, Amanda came bouncing over to open the door for Susan.

"Amanda, wow, you're such a good girl. Here, this is your reward for opening the door for me!" Susan handed Amanda a big bag of snacks.

"Thanks!" Amanda said, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the treats.

Just then, Dorothy came out and, seeing Susan, smiled and said, "Susan, not working today?"

"I came to see Mom," Susan replied with a smile.

Even though she and Dorothy weren't as tight as they used to be, at least things were civil now, and for that, Susan was grateful.

Nothing could go back to the way it was, not even her relationship with Dorothy. So the most important thing in life was to cherish the present.

"Mom's in her room. I'll go wash some fruit for you," Dorothy said, pointing to Catherine's room.

"Okay," Susan smiled and quickly walked to Catherine's room.

She reached out to knock but decided against it and pushed the door open. "Mom!"

Sitting on the bed, Catherine was startled. When she saw it was Susan, she quickly hid whatever she was holding behind her back.

Susan had already caught a glimpse but couldn't quite make out what it was. She frowned. "Mom..."

Catherine cut her off. "Susan, why are you here now? Go wait for me in the living room!"

Seeing Catherine's evasive behavior, Susan knew something was up, so she walked right over. "Mom, what were you holding just now?"

"Nothing," Catherine said, shoving her hands behind her back, clearly trying to hide something.

Susan reached out and grabbed the item from behind Catherine. Catherine anxiously said, "Susan, what are you doing?"

Susan finally saw it—a nearly finished dark blue sweater, and it was a man's sweater. The sweater was big, meaning the guy who'd wear it must be pretty tall.

Seeing this, Susan felt a chill because her suspicions were coming true.

She then looked at Catherine, who couldn't meet her eyes and hung her head like a kid caught doing something wrong.

"Mom, who is this sweater for?" Susan demanded, holding up the sweater.

"Give it back to me!" Catherine said after a long silence, then snatched the sweater from Susan's hand and carefully folded it, placing it under her pillow.

Ignoring Susan, Catherine turned to leave the bedroom.

Susan hurriedly followed, asking, "Mom, is that sweater for Todd?"

Catherine didn't answer, so Susan blocked the doorway with her body.

"Mom, why won't you answer me? Are you afraid to answer?" Susan was super agitated, her voice rising.

At that moment, Catherine suddenly looked up and met Susan's eyes, finally admitting, "Yes, that sweater is for Todd. Are you satisfied now?"

Catherine then pushed past Susan and went to the living room.

In the living room, Catherine slumped onto the sofa, staring out the floor-to-ceiling window, silently crying.

Seeing Catherine like this, Susan felt terrible. Her eyes reddened, and her nose tingled.

Catherine had indeed had a rough life. At over fifty years old, she had spent most of her life alone, especially during her best years. It was truly pitiful. But Susan couldn't accept the fact that she was with Todd. The thing they hated most in life was mistresses, and now Catherine was playing that role. Even though Todd and Carol had a dysfunctional marriage, Todd was still a married man and Seb's father. It was too messy!

Softening, Susan gently walked over to Catherine and sat down beside her, her voice softening. "Mom, you and Todd, you..."

Susan didn't know how to ask. It seemed that no question would be appropriate.

"He loves me, and I love him," Catherine suddenly said after a long pause.

Hearing this, Susan frowned. "But Todd is a married man. Your love isn't legit."

"Todd and Carol's marriage is already dead!" Catherine shouted.
