Chapter 47 The News Spreads
Seb shot Susan a cold glance and said, "No thanks, I'm in a rush."
As he moved to leave, Susan quickly blocked his path, her voice urgent. "Even if you're in a hurry, you need to eat. I already made breakfast."
"I..." Seb began.
But Susan grabbed his hand, pulling him to the dining table. She took his briefcase and insisted, "Come on, eat. It won't take long."
Seb eyed the food, his lips pressed together. Eventually, his grumbling stomach won out, and he sat down. To his surprise, the food was pretty good, and his rush turned into a hearty meal.
Susan sat across from him, chin in hands, watching him eat. Seb's manners were so refined—sitting straight, not looking around, not saying a word—like a noble prince. Watching him eat was a pleasure in itself.
The house was so quiet that Susan couldn't help but start talking. "Breakfast is important, especially for someone who works all morning. Skipping meals can mess up your stomach, and..."
"Can you give me some peace? It's too early for you to be buzzing around like a headless fly," Seb snapped, looking up.
Susan pursed her lips and muttered, "If I'm a fly, then you're a rotten egg!"
"What did you say?" Seb asked, his expression serious.
Susan quickly tucked her hair behind her ear and stammered, "Nothing, I said I need to change this habit."
"I'm going on a business trip. My flight's at nine this morning," Seb suddenly said.
Susan was taken aback. "Why so sudden?"
"It was decided last night," Seb replied calmly.
"How long will you be gone? When will you be back?" Susan felt a bit lost hearing about his sudden trip.
"Three or four days. If you need anything, call Ellie. She'll help you out," Seb added.
"Oh," Susan nodded.
By then, Seb had finished eating. He wiped his mouth with a napkin, stood up, and took the briefcase from Susan's arms, ready to leave.
Susan suddenly held onto the briefcase tightly.
"Is there something else?" Seb frowned.
Susan looked around nervously. "I don't really like the decor of this house. Can I change it?"
Seb relaxed, glanced at the ceiling, and said, "You're the lady of the house now. As long as you don't tear it down, do whatever you want."
With his permission, Susan was overjoyed. She immediately stood up and respectfully handed him the briefcase. "Here you go!"
At that moment, Susan's bright smile made Seb hesitate for a second before he took the briefcase. Then he resolutely turned and left, restraining himself from looking back.
After Seb left, Susan began a major renovation of the house.
She didn't know which designer had decorated the place. The black and white theme made it look cold and rigid, and extremely oppressive. Since she couldn't change the renovation and furniture, Susan decided to use decorative effects to add some color.
First, she swapped out the curtains for vibrant green ones with white lace, giving the place a poetic, dreamy vibe. She changed the sofa cushions and pillows to off-white, replaced the vases and living room carpet with fresh colors, and switched the upstairs bedding to various floral patterns, adding bright flowers in vases. The whole house felt alive, no longer dull and rigid.
One day, while Susan was overseeing the curtain installation, her phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Susan, you've totally forgotten about me since you became a rich lady. Not a single call! Afraid I'll ask to borrow money?" Isabella's loud voice boomed through the phone.
Susan smiled and walked to the balcony. "You know my 'rich lady' status, right? He only gave me a credit card, no cash."
"Credit card? What's the limit?" Isabella asked, intrigued.
"One hundred thousand dollars a month," Susan replied.
Isabella immediately screamed, making Susan hold the phone away from her ear.
"Do you have to be so excited?" Susan said, amused.
"One hundred thousand dollars! You can spend it however you want," Isabella laughed.
"I can't spend that much," Susan said.
She had always been frugal. She had spent quite a bit on the bedding, curtains, and decorations for the house in the past few days. It was the most money she had ever spent in her life because she knew Seb had a taste for quality. So she bought high-end items, as there was nothing low-end in the house.
"Are you stupid? You can buy clothes, shoes, cosmetics, and bags. If you still can't spend it all, buy jewelry. Jewelry can be sold for money later. And if you still can't spend it, you can withdraw cash! With a credit card limit of over a hundred thousand dollars, you can withdraw at least fifty thousand in cash," Isabella suggested.
Susan's smile deepened. "Alright, I'm supervising the workers now. I don't have time to chat. I'll hang up."
"Wait, I have something important to tell you," Isabella quickly said.
"What is it?" Susan asked patiently.
"The news of your marriage to Seb has spread throughout Prosperity Group today. It's a good thing you resigned. Otherwise, the women here would kill you with their looks!" Isabella said.
No wonder several former colleagues, both male and female, had added her on WhatsApp today, and there were two unknown calls she didn't answer, thinking they were spam. It turned out it was because her marriage to Seb had been exposed.
With years of work experience, Susan knew that the young employees at the company were now jealous of her, while the older ones were probably trying to curry favor with her to climb the ladder. Thinking of this, Susan felt annoyed.
"It seems Seb was right not to let me go back to work," Susan said. She had been reluctant to give up her job, but now she realized she wouldn't be able to work properly even if she went back.
"Seb is cunning. You can't outsmart him. You should ask him for a large sum of money while he's in a good mood, or you'll regret it later!"
Listening to Isabella's teasing, Susan smiled slightly.
