Chapter 116 Standing Up
Susan knew Amelia was trouble and didn't want to burden George, so she stepped up. "Amelia, this is between us. Let's settle it without involving others."
"Not involving others? Your lover just hit me!" Amelia's arrogance grew as she saw Susan hesitate.
The word "lover" made Susan‘s face flush with alternating shades of red and white, especially with so many colleagues watching.
George wasn't one to back down. He stepped forward, pointed at Amelia, and said angrily, "Want another slap? I can arrange that!"
Seeing George's anger, Amelia quickly covered her face and stepped back, trying to stay calm. "Don't think you can bully me just because you have backup!"
Two lawyers from the firm stepped in to calm Amelia down, explained the situation, and offered her some medical expenses.
Amelia knew fighting lawyers wouldn't end well, so she took the money and left, blaming Susan for everything.
The lawyers settled it with some cash.
George pulled Susan into his office and grabbed a first aid kit to clean the blood from her mouth.
"Ouch!" Susan winced as she touched her face.
George, sitting on the coffee table, looked at Susan's swollen face and frowned. "Did Amelia say you're her sister?"
Susan, annoyed, quickly denied it. "I'm not related to her."
George raised an eyebrow, doubtful.
Susan explained, "My biological father married her mother, that's all!"
George nodded and smiled. "Gotta admit, she's got some fight in her."
"Why did you pay her so much? I got hit too," Susan complained.
Thinking about Amelia causing a scene and getting money made Susan even angrier.
"I slapped her twice. She won't be going out for a week, so we didn't lose out," George teased.
Susan felt a bit better, knowing Amelia's injuries were worse.
"Deduct that over ten thousand dollars from my salary at the end of the month," Susan said.
"I hit her, why should your money be deducted?" George said, amused.
Susan glared. "This whole thing started because of me."
"I can't let my employees be bullied. Otherwise, how can I be a good boss? Actually, I should thank you for helping me establish authority in the company," George argued.
Susan knew she couldn't win against him. Though she was the best debater in college, George was a lawyer who made a living from arguing.
Thinking about everyone's looks earlier, Susan frowned. "You were too impulsive. You shouldn't have hit her. It can be easily misunderstood."
"Misunderstood how?" George's eyes sparkled with a playful look.
"Misunderstood..." Susan started but saw George's teasing look and got annoyed. "Are you really that clueless or just pretending?"
"Amelia's mouth is filthy, and we can't stop her. Susan, as long as we do our job well, does it matter what she says? Rumors stop with the wise, you should know that," George said seriously.
Susan knew she couldn't win this argument, so she stood up. "You're a top lawyer, I can't argue with you. But we should keep our distance from now on, Mr. Anderson. Please understand."
With that, she turned and walked out.
"What kind of distance?" George asked as she reached the door.
Susan paused, then turned back. "The gap between an average boss and a regular employee."
Without waiting for his reply, she left his office.
Walking down the hallway, Susan noticed people whispering. However, when they saw her, they scattered.
She knew they were gossiping about her and George. She decided to keep her distance from him, hoping the rumors would die down.
The next day, Susan left her office to make some coffee and overheard Fiona talking.
"Fiona, do you think Mr. Anderson and Miss Wilson have something going on?"
Fiona laughed. "How would I know? I haven't seen them in bed together."
The break room erupted in laughter.
After it quieted down, Fiona continued, "But haven't you noticed? Mr. Anderson looks at Miss Wilson differently, with warmth and intensity, like there's chemistry!"
"I also think his gaze is unusual!"
"Why else would he get so worked up when Amelia caused trouble yesterday? Who's ever seen him so angry? And he even hit Amelia!" Fiona added.
"No one!" everyone agreed.
"So, Mr. Anderson must be smitten!" Fiona laughed.
"No way. He's always kept work and personal life separate."
"That's because he hasn't met someone who moves him," Fiona said.
"Doesn't he have a girlfriend? Could he be serious this time?" someone asked.
Fiona shrugged. "Who knows? It depends on who can outlast whom."
"Didn't Amelia say Miss Wilson's ex is the president of Prosperity Group? And Mr. Anderson and the president are brothers. Could it be that the two brothers..." The rest was left unsaid, but the implication was clear.
"What's the big deal about brothers? There are even fathers and sons who share women!" Fiona laughed.
"Fiona, what do you mean by sharing women?" a naive young receptionist asked.
Fiona smiled. "Look it up online. How can a pure woman like me explain? But many people do it."
"Who would've thought Miss Wilson, who looks so proper, is actually so flirtatious, attracting powerful men!"
"You can't judge a woman by her looks. Maybe she knows how to make men feel ecstatic in bed. You all should learn a thing or two!" Fiona's remark caused another round of laughter.
