Chapter 8

Leon took a deep breath, glanced at the figure by the floor-to-ceiling window, and finally spoke up. "Mr. Anderson, after our investigation, it's clear that Susan wasn't set up by anyone."

Seb had always suspected someone had orchestrated Susan's night with him. It seemed too coincidental that she ended up in his bed right after he arrived in Maple Valley, especially since she worked at the branch office.

So, he had Leon dig into it for over two weeks. Turns out, it really was just a coincidence. He and Susan had met by chance.

Seeing Seb stay silent, Leon added, "Susan's unmarried and pregnant. She might consider an abortion."

Seb frowned and immediately ordered, "Make sure no hospital in Maple Valley will perform an abortion for her!"

"Got it." Leon quickly turned to leave.

"And..." Seb called him back.

Leon returned promptly.

"Keep a close watch on her. Make sure she's safe."

"Understood." Leon nodded and hurried off.

Leon had been gone for a while. Seb only snapped out of it when the ash from his cigarette burned his hand.

While Susan was in the hospital, Isabella brought news that David had passed away.

Isabella, being clever, told Catherine that Susan's business trip required confidentiality, so she couldn't turn on her phone. This lie helped cover for Susan.

Susan was heartbroken she couldn't attend David's funeral. She planned to visit his grave later to pay her respects.

She later heard that David, knowing his sons would fight over his estate, had donated everything to the country. Because they couldn't get anything, James and Sophia didn't attend the funeral, which made Susan despise them even more.

On Monday, Susan was discharged and returned to work.

As soon as she sat down, Isabella whispered, "You're back already? Are you okay?"

Susan whispered back, "Doctor said I'm fine, just need to take it easy."

"But you still have to help out in HR. Can you handle it?" Isabella asked, concerned.

Susan frowned, worried about the same thing.

Just then, the finance manager's office door opened.

Wendy, in a black suit and glasses, walked out.

Seeing Wendy, Isabella quickly sat back down.

If Wendy caught her away from her post, she'd get a severe scolding.

Susan quickly stood up. "I'm heading to HR to help."

Having taken such a long leave, Susan was nervous around Wendy, fearing she might be the first to be laid off. She had another child to support now.

"You don't need to go," Wendy stopped her.

Susan stared at Wendy, panicking. 'Did I already offend her?'

Wendy adjusted her glasses and said, "Our finance department is also very busy. I've informed HR to get help from other departments."

Susan sighed in relief and smiled.

She had been worried that running around in HR would affect her unborn child. Now she didn't have to worry.

Wendy suddenly smiled gently at Susan. "You've been working hard. I've asked Isabella to take over half your workload. You just need to handle the rest."

With that, Wendy went back to her office.

Susan sat back down, dazed. Wendy had smiled at her. In three years, she thought Wendy never smiled.

After a moment, Susan felt uneasy. Was Wendy planning to lay her off and being nice now just to keep her calm?

For the next few days, Susan was truly on edge.
