Chapter 162 Enemies Meet
After Isabella left, Susan sat on the bench for a while, occasionally glancing at the giant TV screen. The ad slot must've been short because Seb and Cynthia's wedding photos never came back on.
When her legs went numb, she slowly stood up and wandered aimlessly down the street in her black coat.
She didn't notice her phone ringing at first. When she finally did, she saw it was Maria calling and answered casually.
"Susan, am I interrupting?" Maria sounded excited.
Susan tried to sound upbeat. "No, I'm not busy."
"Susan, I got promoted!" Maria announced.
Susan was momentarily stunned. "Congrats! You're taking over Fiona's position, right?"
"Yes! I thought Mr. Anderson would hire another finance manager, but he called me in yesterday and told me to take over Fiona's work. I was speechless," Maria said, clearly proud.
"You're perfect for the job. Congrats again," Susan said, genuinely happy for Maria. Maria was capable and honest, never getting involved in office politics.
Maria laughed. "Fiona handed over her work to me this morning. She was furious, almost smashed the desk. But with two lawyers overseeing, she couldn't do anything. After putting up with her for so long, I finally got my revenge!"
"Just forget about her," Susan advised.
Fiona was difficult and never fit in. She had no friends and always thought she was right and everyone else was wrong.
Maria added, "Susan, our firm is now George Law Firm, and Mr. Anderson and Vivian have broken up. Vivian has withdrawn her shares."
Maria's voice dropped as she said the last part.
Susan was momentarily stunned but then remembered the last time she saw Vivian. It wasn't surprising they broke up. She felt a slight pang of guilt—did their breakup have something to do with her?
"Someone's coming, Susan. I'll talk to you later!" Maria said and hung up.
Susan smirked at her phone, put it back in her bag, and continued walking.
But then someone blocked her path.
Thinking it was a passerby, she moved left while organizing her bag.
The person moved left too, still blocking her.
Susan frowned and was about to ask them to move when she looked up and saw Fiona's familiar face.
Fiona glared at Susan like she was an enemy, her eyes full of malice and her smile fake, as if Susan were a thorn in her side.
"Susan, you're such a jinx! Anyone who gets involved with you is doomed!" Fiona's voice was sharp.
Susan didn't expect to run into Fiona on the street. Despite Fiona's nasty attitude, Susan had no interest in arguing.
"Watch your mouth. I don't have time for this," Susan said and started to walk away.
Fiona, determined not to let this chance slip by, stepped forward to block her path again.
"What do you want?" Susan asked coldly.
"What do I want? I have some questions for you!" Fiona said arrogantly.
Susan didn't even want to look at her. "I have nothing to say to you."
"Nothing to say? Don't think I don't know. I got fired from George and Vivian Law Firm because of you, didn't I? Wasn't it you who snitched to George?" Fiona demanded harshly.
Susan's lips curled into a cold smile. "I think you should look for the reasons within yourself."
"What do you mean?" Fiona was puzzled.
"You've been at George and Vivian Law Firm for a long time, and you're quite capable. Why would George rather hire a temporary finance manager than give you the position? It's because you're too smart for your own good, always putting yourself first. In other words, you're selfish and sometimes even cause trouble for no reason. Do you think George would trust someone like you?" Susan said coldly.
Susan's words hit the nail on the head. Although she disliked Fiona, she couldn't deny Fiona's capability if she had a good heart.
Fiona stared at Susan in a daze, then started cursing incoherently. "Who do you think you are to lecture me? I'll show you what I'm made of!"
With that, Fiona raised her hand to hit Susan.
But Susan was quick and grabbed Fiona's wrist.
Fiona was furious at having her wrist grabbed.
Susan stared coldly at Fiona. "Fiona, I advise you not to mess with me. Otherwise, I'll fight you to the death. I have nothing to lose!"
Then, Susan forcefully released Fiona's hand.
If Fiona tried to bully her again, Susan was ready to fight back with all her might. After all, she was already in despair; life seemed devoid of color and meaning.
"Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Fiona said, but she could see the coldness in Susan's eyes, which made her uneasy. Susan seemed different today, but Fiona couldn't quite put her finger on it.
Susan could tell Fiona was scared because she took two steps back, her arrogance significantly diminished. Susan couldn't help but smile.
She finally said to Fiona, "Remember this: if you don't want people to know, don't do it. Anyone can see through your actions. Your current situation is entirely your own doing!"
With that, Susan turned and walked away quickly without looking back, leaving Fiona standing there in shock.
