Chapter 22
Susan bolted out of the hospital, ready to flag down a cab.
Out of nowhere, a black Bentley screeched to a halt right in front of her.
Startled, she took a step back, only to see Seb stepping out of the back seat.
She thought about running, but Seb was quicker, grabbing her shoulder.
"Are youfool me?" Seb's voice was laced with anger.
"I wasn't trying to fool you! My stomach just stopped hurting," Susan stammered, trying to explain.
"Let's get married," Seb said suddenly, locking eyes with her.
Susan stared at him, stunned.
'Wait, isn't this the part where he throws a check at me and tells me to handle it?' she thought.
"Married? You can't be serious. I'll take it seriously," she said, thinking he must be joking.
Plenty of women wanted to marry Seb. If it was just about the baby, he'd be married a dozen times over by now.
"I'm dead serious," Seb said, his eyes boring into hers.
Susan's heart raced. Seb wasn't joking. He never joked with her.
Her mind spun. Seb actually wanted to marry her? She'd imagined a lot of scenarios, but not this.
"Don't you want our child?" Seb's face hardened when she didn't respond.
"Who said I don't want this child? Of course, I do," Susan shot back.
Seb's lips curled into a smile, his voice softening. "That's what I wanted to hear."
Susan hesitated, looking at Seb. She hadn't decided if she wanted to marry him.
Seb had everything: family, money, looks, brains. She was just an ordinary woman. Marrying him would be a lot of pressure.
"Do you want our child to be illegitimate?" Seb asked, staring at her.
"Of course not," Susan blurted out.
The baby was just an embryo, but she already wanted to give everything for it.
"Good. Let's go to the Ministry of Communities now," Seb said, taking her hand and leading her to the car.
His hand was warm, and Susan felt a wave of security wash over her. She didn't know Seb well, but she believed he'd protect her and the baby.
Seb was so amazing and handsome. Their baby would definitely inherit his genes. At the very least, the baby would be exceptional.
As the car drove smoothly, Susan looked at Seb, confused. " Are we registering for marriage?"
Seb glanced at her and chuckled. "You're so efficient at work, but why can't you react when it comes to your own life?"
Susan pursed her lips. "If I wasn't sharp at work, how could I be exploited by capitalists?"
Seb frowned at the word "capitalist," then said, "The departmentis about to close. I don't have time to argue."
He suddenly pulled out two papers and handed them to her. "This is our prenuptial agreement. Look it over. If you have any questions, add them. If not, just sign it."
Susan was stunned for a moment, then took the prenuptial agreement from his hand.
She glanced at it and frowned. The agreement was simple but striking.
[After marriage, both parties agree to the following terms:
1. During the marriage, Party A will cover all expenses for Party B and Party B's child.
2. If the parties divorce, Party A promises to buy Party B a house of no less than 1,600 square feet and give two million dollars in cash. Party B has no right to any of Party A's assets.
3. During the marriage, Party B must not have close interactions with the opposite sex.
4. Party B must cooperate with Party A to be a model couple.
5. If the parties divorce, custody of the child will belong to Party A.]
Susan read the agreement and realized one thing: she'd have a meal ticket for life, but if they divorced, she wouldn't even get to keep the child.
The more she read, the angrier she got. She thought Seb would take care of her and the baby, but it seemed he only wanted the baby.
Feeling hurt, Susan threw the agreement at Seb. "Stop the car. I'm not getting married."
Seb didn't seem surprised. He looked out the window and said calmly, "Susan, you should know that a family like mine doesn't just pick any woman to marry or have kids with. Before I proposed, I knew everything about you. I'm not joking. I won't force you, but remember, your stepsister Amelia knows you're pregnant. When do you think she'll tell your family? How will you face your mom? Can you keep this child on your own?"
"Are you threatening me?" Susan was furious.
She remembered Seb calling her to his office for lunch, even knowing her favorite restaurant. She felt exposed. Seb knew everything about her.
Seb had money and power. She was vulnerable in front of him.
A cold smile crossed Seb's face, but his tone stayed calm. "This child is mine too. I don't want the child hurt because of your stubbornness."
Seb only cared about the baby. Susan couldn't explain why that made her so angry. Maybe it was because his words were brutally honest. Her mom, Catherine, had a failed marriage and knew how hard it was to be a single mom. That's why she tried to set Susan up with good prospects. If Catherine knew she was pregnant out of wedlock, she'd be devastated. That's why Susan kept it a secret.
And this baby... Susan gently touched her belly, feeling a deep reluctance.
Seb looked at her and asked the driver, Leon, "How long until we reach the department?"
"Three more minutes."
Seb turned to Susan. "You have three minutes to decide. I have a meeting at six."
His message was clear. If she didn't decide before they got there, the proposal was off the table.
Susan's heart pounded as she met Seb's gaze.
Seeing her hesitation, Seb added, "If you choose to have an abortion, I'll cover the costs for the surgery and recovery."
Susan stared at him in disbelief. "If I choose to abort, you won't oppose it?"
Seb squinted. "I can't force anyone to have my child. Whether this child is born is up to you."
