Chapter 793 A Warm Embrace
Hearing this, Susan quickly looked up at Seb and said, "No, it wasn't Kathy who told me. I accidentally overheard your conversation with her that day when I went downstairs."
Seb's brows furrowed. "You were awake that day? So you were pretending to be asleep."
Susan lowered her eyes. "I didn't know how to face you. I was so scared that you would break up with me."
Seeing Susan's nervous and helpless look, Seb's heart softened, and he reached out to hold her hand on the table.
Feeling the warmth of his hand, Susan felt even more sorrowful.
These past few days, he had been leaving early and coming back late. This seemed to be the most intimate physical contact they had.
"I'm sorry, it's all my fault," Seb said, looking at Susan with a guilty expression.
"This has nothing to do with you; it's just fate playing tricks on us," Susan said, her eyes filled with sadness.
Seb's eyes reddened, and he looked away, then forced a smile and said, "Let's not talk about these upsetting things. Let's eat. Look at all the good food you made; it's getting cold."
As he spoke, Seb placed some food on Susan's plate.
Hearing that he didn't want to talk about the topic, Susan lowered her head and forced herself to eat, but it tasted like sawdust to her.
Seb wasn't much better off. As they ate, they occasionally glanced at each other, aside from a few stray words, they both avoided meaningful conversation.
That night, Seb went to bed unusually early.
When Susan came upstairs after putting Hayden and Spring to bed, he seemed to be already asleep.
Not wanting to wake him, Susan quietly got into bed.
Each of them occupied one side of the large bed, with nearly three feet of distance between their bodies. Fortunately, the blanket was big enough.
In the middle of the night, Susan turned over and wanted to touch him, but she didn't feel Seb on the other side.
Susan opened her sleepy eyes and, by the dim starlight outside, realized that there was no one else in the bed but her!
Susan was startled!
She sat up and looked around the room, but there was no one, and the bathroom light was off.
Where did he go? With this question in mind, Susan put on a robe and quietly walked out of the bedroom to look for him.
He wasn't in the study, the upstairs living room, or the guest room. Just as Susan was about to go downstairs to look, she caught a glimpse of a figure on the terrace.
At this time, the weather in Northstar City was very cold, definitely below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. She saw him wearing that black cashmere coat, standing in front of the railing, looking ahead as if he was gazing at something.
In the dim starlight, there was a faint red glow between the fingers of his left hand; he was smoking.
Susan couldn't help but frown. At this time, in such cold weather, he was hiding here alone to smoke, clearly feeling very troubled.
Since coming to Northstar City and staying with Hayden and Spring, he had rarely smoked, but in recent days, Susan could clearly smell the tobacco on him.
He had his back to her, so he couldn't see her. Susan's eyes welled up as she looked at the familiar figure outside the glass door, feeling very bitter.
Susan knew he couldn't go against Carol's dying wish, but he didn't want to let her down either, nor did he want to break up their family of four. So he kept all the pain to himself, not even willing to share his feelings with her.
Susan could feel his deep love, and the next moment, she suddenly wanted to cry her heart out. Why was it so hard for them to just stay together?
Looking at the figure outside the glass door, Susan's eyes were already filled with tears. His figure became increasingly blurry, and Susan covered her mouth, afraid that he would hear her crying.
Susan didn't want to leave; she still gazed longingly at his back.
But Susan knew she couldn't control her emotions any longer. She had to leave quickly; she didn't want him to see her crying.
Then, Susan turned around and quickly tried to leave.
However, she accidentally bumped into the flower stand next to her!
The flower stand instantly toppled over, and the flower pot on it inevitably fell to the floor.
The ceramic flower pot shattered into pieces, and the soil scattered all over the floor.
This sudden situation caught Susan off guard, and she froze on the spot.
Naturally, Seb outside the glass door heard the noise. He turned around and saw a figure inside the glass door.
The next moment, Seb turned around, opened the glass door, and turned on the hallway light switch. The light immediately illuminated the entire hallway.
Seb saw Susan clearly at this moment and also saw the mess on the floor, instantly understanding everything.
Seeing him, Susan quickly turned her back, not wanting him to see her tear-streaked face.
"What are you doing here?" Seb asked, puzzled.
"I woke up and didn't see you, so I came out to look," Susan's voice was still a bit choked.
At this time, the glass door connecting the terrace and the hallway was still open, and the cold air from outside kept blowing into the hallway.
Susan was only wearing a nightgown and a thin robe. The cold air made her shiver, and she sneezed several times in a row.
Susan couldn't help but hug her shoulders tightly.
Seeing this, Seb quickly reached out and closed the glass door!
The next moment, he took off his cashmere coat and draped it over Susan's shoulders.
"The temperature at night is very low. You came out without wearing a coat; you'll catch a cold, you know?" Seb's voice kept nagging in Susan's ear.
The next moment, Susan couldn't control her emotions any longer and threw herself into the broad and warm embrace in front of her!
Seb naturally saw the tear stains on her face and understood her feelings at this moment.
But he said nothing. One hand still held the cigarette butt, while the other tightly hugged her shoulders.
The two of them just held each other tightly for a long, long time, without saying a word.
After a long time, Seb frowned and let out a low cry.
Only then did Susan leave his embrace, stand up straight, and frown as she asked, "What's wrong?"
"The cigarette burned out," Seb said, looking down at the butt he had dropped on the ground after it burned his hand.
Seeing the cigarette butt on the ground and the mess she had made earlier, Susan frowned and said, "It's so messy here. Let me clean it up."
