Chapter 309 Unexpected Situation

Seb's words got Susan all riled up, and she snapped, "I must've been outta my mind back then. Didn't you fall for a kidnapper too?"

Susan's jab made Seb's playful grin vanish, his face turning serious.

The kidnapper she mentioned was Cynthia, a sore spot for both of them and Seb's biggest regret when it came to Susan.

Right after she said it, Susan felt a pang of regret, seeing the sadness in Seb's eyes.

Time had passed, and Susan, being the laid-back person she was, didn't want to dig up old wounds. But thinking about it still gave her a dull ache.

Then, with a cold edge, Susan said, "Let go of me!"

Seb's arms stayed put despite her demand. His sad eyes locked onto Susan, who was glaring back at him.

"Didn't you hear me? Let go!" Susan's voice got louder when he didn't budge.

This time, Seb let go, his arms dropping slowly.

As soon as she was free, Susan stepped back, putting some distance between them. The whole thing had been super awkward that their bodies had been pressed together for several minutes, and now, her heart was racing for some reason.

Seb looked at her with those sad eyes and asked, "Do you really hate me that much?"

Susan took a deep breath and turned away. She didn't want to look into Seb's eyes, which always messed with her feelings. "I don't hate you; I just don't care about you anymore."

Her words made Seb's body jolt!

He stood there, stunned for a moment, then gave a bitter smile. "Do you even know what your words do to me?"

"Not my problem!" Susan's voice was icy, but her hands were balled into fists.

"If I died right here, right now, would you feel anything?" Seb asked, staring at her.

Susan really wanted to scream. She'd been through so much as a single woman, but he? Now she really wanted to punch him so bad.

But she knew she couldn't hit him, so she just said, even colder, "Of course, I'd be sad."

Seb's face lit up for a second.

"I'd be sad that Hayden and Spring lost their rich dad and their lives would suck." She watched Seb's smile freeze.

She had to remind him he had Hayden and Spring, and he had a lot on his plate. Talking about dying was pointless.

Seb looked crushed. He grabbed the railing on the terrace. He used to be the kind of guy who could handle anything, but now he was a mess. Facing Susan, he felt totally helpless.

Even though they were outside, Susan felt like she couldn't breathe.

So, she said, "I'm heading back."

She'd just taken a step when—

Boom! The balcony went pitch black!

A scream echoed nearby, and the whole hotel, heck, the whole city of Maple Valley, plunged into darkness, sending everyone into a panic.

"What's happening?" Susan's voice was urgent as she faced the pitch-black darkness. Tonight was moonless and starless, making it impossible to see anything.

"Looks like a citywide blackout," Seb's voice came from the darkness.

"A citywide blackout? How's that even possible?" Susan's voice was tinged with panic.

Maple Valley almost never had blackouts, and a citywide one was unheard of for years.

Susan felt a mix of irritation and fear. She'd been scared of the dark since she was a kid, and the recent alley incident had only made it worse. Now she was really on edge!

"When's the power coming back?" Susan took a step forward, but her high heels made her slip.

She lost her balance and was about to fall. Just her luck—tonight was a disaster, and now she was probably going to get hurt too.

Suddenly, Seb's strong arm caught her. Susan, terrified of falling, clung to him.

"Watch it," Seb said, steadying her.

"It's not like I'm not trying! I can't see a thing!" Susan snapped, annoyed.

She grabbed onto his suit and slowly regained her balance.

"When's the power coming back?" she asked again, letting go of his suit once she was steady.

"Hard to say. We don't know what caused the outage," Seb replied, letting go of her, not wanting to irritate her with his touch.

"So, we're just gonna wait here?" Susan frowned.

After a moment's hesitation, Seb said, "Best bet is to wait here. The banquet hall's probably a madhouse right now. People might get hurt with all the tables and flowers around."

"We can take the elevator down," Susan suggested, eager to leave.

"No power, no elevator," Seb pointed out.

Susan slapped her forehead. How had she missed that?

"Then we'll take the emergency stairs," she said.

"We're nearly thirty floors up, and you're in high heels. You'll probably end up in the hospital with a sprained ankle," Seb said, his tone lightening.

Susan glared at him and fell silent. Anyway, he couldn't see it.

She suddenly thought of Isabella and worried about her. She hoped Seb was exaggerating about the chaos in the banquet hall.

They stood in silence, unable to see each other's eyes or expressions, just the faint outlines of their bodies.

Susan said nothing, feeling like time was dragging. She had nothing to say to Seb.

Seb's eyes were fixed on Susan, thankful for the darkness that hid his gaze.

After what felt like forever, a bright light suddenly shone from the open terrace, the distance, and the hotel's windows.
