Chapter 465 Questioning
After Kathy finished talking, she darted into the kitchen like a ninja.
Susan, all kinds of confused, wandered into the living room.
The second she stepped in, she could feel the tension in the air.
Carol was parked on the sofa with a face like thunder, while Seb was by the floor-to-ceiling window, rocking a white shirt, staring outside, giving her the cold shoulder.
Right now, Todd and Mary should be out walking Spring, and Hayden should be buried in homework in his room.
Seb didn't even move when Susan walked in, still standing there like a statue.
Carol shot Susan a look but kept her mouth shut.
Susan was baffled. Didn't Seb call her before noon, saying he was gonna give his mom a piece of his mind? And he even sweet-talked her into being patient. What the heck happened? She couldn't see Seb's face, but she could feel his bad vibes.
Like Seb said, Carol was still an elder, and Susan couldn't just blow her off, even though Carol's constant nagging drove her nuts.
"Mom." After a moment's hesitation, Susan greeted Carol.
Carol looked at her and, surprisingly, didn't kick up a fuss or bring up the morning's drama. Instead, she said in a softer tone, "You and Seb can sort out your own stuff. I don't want you whining that I'm meddling too much as a mother-in-law."
Then Carol got up, walked over to Susan, gave her a once-over, and then strutted upstairs with a smug grin.
What did she mean by "your own stuff"? What stuff did she have with Seb? Their relationship was solid; it should be stuff between her and Carol, right?
Just then, Seb spun around, and Susan saw his serious face.
"Seb?" Susan called out softly.
Seb replied coldly, "Come upstairs with me. We need to talk!"
With that, he turned and headed upstairs, looking all stern.
Watching Seb's broad back, Susan couldn't help but frown. She was lost. What was going on?
He was all sweet and even said it was all his mom's fault before noon. How did he turn so icy in just a few hours? Did Carol get in his ear?
Susan followed Seb upstairs.
Once in the guest bedroom, Susan closed the door behind her.
Seb was standing there, one hand on his hip, looking pissed.
Susan, still clueless, walked over and asked softly, "Seb, what's going on? Mom just said we should handle our stuff ourselves. What stuff?"
Seb's face was still cold. After a moment, he pulled out a small box from his pocket and tossed it on the bed. "Is this yours?"
Susan picked up the box, suspicious. Looking down, she saw it was a box of contraceptive pills. Opening it, she saw only three pills left. She said, "Yeah, it's mine. How did you get it?"
Susan and Seb had been living together for a while. She didn't want to get pregnant again, so she had been taking contraceptive pills.
"Don't you think you owe me an explanation? You don't want to have more kids with me, do you?" Seb asked sternly.
Susan was a bit thrown and said, "We already got two kids. I don't think we need a third one, at least not right now. I haven't made up my mind about the future."
Hearing this, Seb got even more pissed, clenching his fists and frowning hard. "Even if you don't want more kids right now, shouldn't we talk about it? You can't just make that call on your own!"
His yelling hurt her ears, and Susan said, all innocent, "I admit I had doubts on my mind when I first moved here. I was scared another kid would be a burden. We both got our careers, and two kids are enough!"
Susan's words made Seb even angrier. "What did you just say? You had doubts about being with me? Why would another kid be a burden? Can't I support a third kid? Susan, aren't you being too selfish?"
Susan felt like Seb was being totally unreasonable today. She hadn't told him about the pills because, back then, he hadn't mentioned wanting to remarry her because of Todd's situation. She didn't know about his dad's situation either, so she thought he didn't want to remarry her and was scared of having another kid.
After they got their marriage license, Susan had forgotten about it. She didn't expect him to find the pills today.
Since they got their marriage license, she hadn't thought about hiding it from him. The pills were in the nightstand on her side of the bed, and he hadn't noticed them for so many days.
How did he find them today? And she remembered Carol's smug smile when she passed by earlier, saying Susan and Seb should handle their stuff themselves. So Carol knew about this too.
Could it be...
When Susan thought of this, she looked into Seb's angry eyes and asked, "Did you find this box of pills?"
When asked this question, Seb hesitated for a moment before saying, "Of course."
Susan took a step forward, staring at Seb, and said, "No, you're lying. Your face just gave you away!"
"If I didn't find it, who did?" Seb was a bit guilty.
Susan kept pushing, "Then tell me, where did you find it in our room?"
For a moment, Seb was speechless.
Seeing he couldn't answer, Susan sneered and said, "Your mom found it while I wasn't here, right?"
Susan angrily threw the pill box on the bed!
"This is my mom's house too, right? It's not crazy for her to come in and look for something, is it?" Seb argued.
"It's not crazy, but seeing my stuff, moving it around, and then giving it to you to stir up trouble, that's crazy!" Susan said angrily.
She didn't expect Carol to pull such a stunt, successfully driving a wedge between her and Seb.
At this moment, a voice inside her told her, 'Don't fall for Carol's trick. She wants you and Seb to fight so she can keep making things hard for you.' But Susan's stubborn nature couldn't stand Seb's questioning and cold attitude, nor could she handle his inability to see right from wrong.
