Chapter 1133 Powerless to Refuse
"Cecilia, why do you look so pale? Are you overworked?" Noticing that Cecilia hadn't spoken for a while, Barry stepped forward and carefully examined her under the night sky.
"Maybe I've been working overtime too much these past few days." Cecilia reached out and touched her face.
"Do you have time tonight? I can take you out to get a big meal," Barry asked cautiously, his expression showing his fear of her refusal.
At this moment, Cecilia looked at Barry under the city lights and felt powerless to refuse. In this unfamiliar city, especially after being overly hurt these past few days, she found it hard to resist the warmth in Barry's eyes. But she knew she didn't love Barry and could only consider him a friend.
The next moment, Cecilia smiled and said, "If you let me treat you, I'll go. After all, Maple Valley is my hometown, and I should host you."
"Then I won't refuse." Hearing Cecilia agree, Barry couldn't hide his joy.
An hour later, they were sitting in a restaurant, chatting while eating.
"Barry, I'm working on an exclusive interview. If it succeeds, I might get a permanent position." Cecilia shared the good news with Barry.
Upon hearing this, Barry smiled and said, "That's great, congratulations."
"The latest issue's sales need to go up first, so don't congratulate me too early." Cecilia laughed.
"I believe you can do it," Barry encouraged Cecilia.
Then Cecilia said, "It's really Seraphine who gave me this opportunity. Otherwise, Calista would never have entrusted such an important task to me."
Cecilia originally wanted to thank Seraphine, but suddenly she stared at Barry, feeling something was off.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Barry looked down at himself, feeling nothing was wrong.
Then Cecilia asked, "Did you say something to Seraphine? Why would she suddenly think of me and give such an important task to a newcomer like me?"
These past few days, Cecilia had occasionally wondered why she, a newcomer, was assigned to assist Calista with such an important interview with Skylar.
Hearing this, Barry didn't deny it but just smiled deeply.
"Was it really you?" Seeing Barry's expression, Cecilia widened her eyes.
At this point, Barry said, "Rest assured, I didn't plead with my mother for you. I just mentioned your performance in school, and she admired you. That's probably why she gave you the opportunity."
"Really?" Cecilia stared at Barry with suspicion.
"Of course, in my eyes, you're outstanding," Barry said, looking at Cecilia with admiration.
Hearing this, Cecilia touched her face. "You flattered me."
Barry smiled and said. "Let's eat."
Cecilia smiled, lowered her head, and picked up a piece of fish. Just as she was about to eat it, she smelled a hint of fishiness, and her stomach churned. She quickly covered her mouth and left her seat.
"Cecilia!" Seeing Cecilia run off, Barry quickly got up and chased after her.
He chased her all the way to the women's restroom door before stopping anxiously.
Barry waited at the restroom door for several minutes before Cecilia came out.
"Cecilia, are you okay?" Barry asked urgently as soon as he saw her.
Seeing Barry's concerned eyes, Cecilia said guiltily, "I'm fine."
"Let's go back," Barry said, supporting the pale Cecilia back to their seats.
Back at the table, Cecilia had no appetite to eat, only drinking some water and chatting with Barry.
"Why aren't you eating?" Barry asked, looking at Cecilia.
"Not much appetite, you go ahead," Cecilia said, now having no appetite for fish.
At this point, Barry frowned and seemed to want to say something but hesitated.
"What do you want to say?" Cecilia noticed Barry's unusual expression.
Barry then said, "Cecilia, is there something about your health that you can't talk about?"
Hearing this, Cecilia felt a bit embarrassed.
Cecilia looked down at the water in her cup, hesitated, and said, "I'm perfectly healthy, nothing I can't talk about."
"Are you pregnant?" Barry finally asked.
Hearing this, Cecilia looked up in surprise, meeting Barry's questioning eyes.
"How did you know?" At this moment, Cecilia knew she couldn't hide it anymore.
However, Cecilia still didn't understand how Barry could tell she was pregnant. After all, she'd been working at the magazine for twenty days, and none of her colleagues had suspected it.
Hearing this, Barry's eyes lost focus for a moment, then he said, "So it's true."
Cecilia's face turned blush, and she lowered her head, feeling a bit ashamed. "You're really sharp. Many women haven't noticed I'm pregnant."
Barry smiled wryly and said, "My aunt is an obstetrician. When I was young, my mother was too busy to look after me, so my aunt would take me to the hospital. I've seen many pregnant women who vomit like you and look pale."
Hearing this, Cecilia smiled wryly.
Then Barry looked at Cecilia and asked, "Do you and Daryl plan to get married?"
Hearing this, Cecilia shook her head.
Barry frowned tightly.
At this point, Cecilia knew she no longer needed to hide.
The next moment, Cecilia looked up and met Barry's gaze, saying, "Daryl and I have no relationship anymore. He doesn't know I'm pregnant. I plan to have this baby and raise it myself."
Hearing this, Barry was momentarily speechless, his face full of surprise.
Then Cecilia pleaded with Barry, "Barry, I've hidden my pregnancy from the magazine because I really need this job. I beg you not to tell your mother, okay?"
Hearing this, Barry said, "This is your privacy. I have no right to tell anyone."
Hearing this, Cecilia looked at Barry gratefully and said, "Thank you, I'll work hard."
"Your complexion is really bad. Take care of yourself. If you have any difficulties, feel free to tell me," Barry said, looking at Cecilia with concern.
"Okay." Cecilia agreed readily.
The next morning, Calista walked to Cecilia's desk and said, "The article you wrote has been approved by Ms. Lawson. As a courtesy, today you should pick out a wedding gift and personally deliver it to Victoria. It's a small token from our magazine, with a budget of up to a thousand dollars, mainly for commemoration."
