Chapter 289 Block His Way
Susan whipped her head around and saw Dorothy strolling over, hand-in-hand with Amanda.
Seeing them, Susan was floored. She didn't expect them to be home, and judging by their comfy clothes, it looked like they'd been chilling here for a while.
Her mind raced, 'Last time, Henry was all about divorcing Dorothy. Could it be...'
Before she could finish her thought, Dorothy piped up, "What's the big deal with dad moving in? He's our biological father, after all."
"Yeah, exactly," James jumped in, backing her up.
Susan stared at Dorothy, totally baffled. Why was Dorothy suddenly talking like this?
For years, she and Dorothy had leaned on Catherine and ignored James, but now Dorothy was calling him "Dad."
After a beat, Susan pointed at James and snapped at Dorothy, "You're calling him dad? Has he ever acted like a father? Dorothy, you used to hate him the most! What's changed? Why?"
Susan couldn't wrap her head around it. She vividly remembered James looking down on her and Dorothy while treating Amelia like gold.
Dorothy's face twitched a bit, but she quickly shot back, "He messed up before, but now he knows he was wrong and wants to come back to the family. Isn't that normal? Lots of guys can't resist other women when they're young but come back to their families when they're older. It's not just us. At least he's our biological father."
Susan felt like Dorothy's logic was completely twisted. What had happened to her?
"Dorothy, you've really let me down. How could you get so mixed up about right and wrong?" Susan's eyes were full of hurt.
She used to think Henry and Dorothy were just out to get her, but now she saw why Henry said he and Dorothy had nothing in common.
Dorothy sneered, "I've let you down? Haven't you let me down? Haven't you let mom and this family down? You don't live a good life, don't marry a good man, and cause drama every day. You're the one who's mixed up and unreasonable!"
Susan was so mad her hands were shaking.
Just then, Catherine, who'd been looking upset, yelled, "Can you all just stop fighting? If you can't, then don't come back. Every time you come back, it's a fight. What kind of life is this?"
She stormed over to the sofa, plopped down, and buried her head in her hands.
Seeing Catherine so fed up, Susan glanced at James and Dorothy, feeling like this house was suffocating. She couldn't stay another minute.
She said, disappointed, "Maybe I shouldn't have come back. Mom, I bought you some food. I'm outta here!"
"Susan." Catherine's voice stopped her in her tracks. It was full of suppressed emotion. Susan couldn't help but think, 'Maybe mom didn't want this either but had no choice?'
Just then, Dorothy's phone rang, and she quickly answered it.
"How's it? Alright, we'll be there ASAP. Keep an eye on him and don't let him out of your sight!" Dorothy barked into her phone before hanging up.
She turned to James, all anxious, "Dad, our people spotted Henry at the school. We gotta go now!"
"Got it," James nodded, and they both rushed out, Dorothy dragging Amanda along.
Watching them bolt, Susan frowned and turned to Catherine, whispering, "Mom, what are they up to?"
Catherine looked worn out and sighed, "What else? They're going to stir up trouble for Henry!"
Susan's frown deepened.
Catherine continued, "You haven't been around for a few months, so you don't know. Henry's already filed for divorce. He even quit his job at the university to push it through. Dorothy moved back in with Amanda long ago."
Susan realized Henry was completely serious.
"Dorothy still won't agree to the divorce?" Susan asked, her brow furrowing.
"Dorothy thought Henry couldn't bear to be apart from Amanda, so she moved back with her and threatened that if Henry didn't drop the lawsuit, he'd never see Amanda again. But Henry didn't budge. Dorothy's been here for almost two months, and Henry hasn't called once. She couldn't satnd clam, so she set up people to watch for Henry at the school and then took Amanda to cause a scene, trying to ruin his reputation." Catherine's face was full of worry.
Susan's frown deepened even more.
Dorothy had always been the good kid. How did she end up using these dirty tricks?
"But this is just gonna push Henry further away. Doesn't Dorothy get that?" Susan asked.
"I've tried to talk sense into her, but she won't listen. And it gets worse. One night, she called Henry and made Amanda cry loudly, hoping he'd soften up. But Henry, being no better, just hung up when he heard Amanda crying! I can't do anything about Dorothy's mess. Now she's taking Amanda to the university to make a scene. Who knows what'll happen." Catherine was at her wit's end.
Susan could only shake her head. She couldn't fix Dorothy's mess and didn't want to get involved. She could only let Dorothy be.
Then Susan looked at Catherine and asked, "Mom, what about James? How did he come back? Has he been living here long?"
Susan couldn't stand the thought of James being back. She really didn't want to face him again.
Catherine looked distressed. "A month ago, he showed up and banged on the door, refusing to leave unless we let him in."
Susan believed it; James was a real piece of work.
Catherine went on, "He stayed at the door for three days and nights. The neighbors came to watch the spectacle, so Dorothy let him in."
"Mom, are you seriously gonna let him stay here?" Susan asked, frowning.
"What else can I do? You know how he is. Plus, Dorothy's on his side now. Didn't you see how involved he is in Dorothy's business? A few days ago, he was tagging along with Dorothy everywhere to block Henry. I really can't do anything about the two of them now." Catherine said, frustrated.
Susan was fuming. She said flatly, "Kick him out! If he refuses, I'll call the cops."
