Chapter 142 Acting Spoiled
At night, Susan took a bath and got into bed in her pajamas.
She couldn't sleep, her mind racing with thoughts of Seb, and could almost smell his scent.
She wanted to throw on some clothes, call a cab, and go to Seb's house, but she held back. She knew patience now meant happiness later. She couldn't break her promise. Half a month would fly by; she just had to hang in there.
Suddenly, her phone started flashing and ringing on the nightstand.
She grabbed it and saw Seb's name on the screen. Susan sat up quickly.
It was Seb calling. His number kept flashing. Susan hesitated but couldn't resist answering.
"Are you asleep?" Seb's deep, pleasant voice came through.
Hearing his voice, Susan's heart tightened. "Didn't we agree not to see each other for half a month?"
Seb paused before saying, "You only said we wouldn't see each other; you didn't say we couldn't call."
Susan was speechless. She smiled and let it go.
"I can't sleep," she said, looking at the stars, her longing for Seb growing.
"Me neither," Seb replied. "I had to muster the courage to call you. Just hearing your voice is enough." Seb's voice sounded forlorn, making him seem pitiful in the quiet night.
Susan's heart tugged, and she smiled, trying to shake off the longing.
"Mr. Anderson, you've learned to show weakness and act pitiful."
"I'm genuinely pitiful, okay?" Seb had never been this vulnerable before, and it unsettled Susan a bit.
"Surrounded by women, and you call that pitiful?" Susan teased.
"Can you stop making fun of me? I've never been this overwhelmed before, and it's all because of you," Seb said self-deprecatingly.
"I'm probably not the reason, am I?" Susan hinted.
"If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have so many concerns. I would let things settle slowly," Seb suddenly became serious.
"Because of me, you have concerns?" Susan asked, feeling a bit pleased. Seb, always proud and arrogant, had never said such things before. It was hard to get him to admit it.
"Because I'm afraid you'll be unhappy, misunderstand me, or be sad. I can't afford to have so many concerns anymore. I need to resolve this quickly," Seb said.
Hearing this, Susan knew he was talking about Cynthia and asked, "How is she doing now?"
"Her condition has stabilized. The doctor said she could be discharged after two more days of observation. Once she's out, I'll explain everything to her and send her back to Averlake for further treatment," Seb replied.
"What if she doesn't want to go back to Averlake?" Susan asked tentatively.
Although she hadn't interacted with Cynthia, Susan knew a bit about her personality. Cynthia wouldn't give up on Seb easily. Susan still remembered the look Cynthia gave her when she left the ward that day.
Seb was quiet for a moment before firmly saying, "If she refuses to go back to Averlake for treatment, I won't see her again. I'll only pay her rent, nothing more. Even if she gets sick again, I won't visit her in the hospital. I'll have Leon handle everything for her since she's an old acquaintance."
Susan felt a mix of relief and pity for Cynthia.
After all, she was a woman too. Was Seb being too harsh on Cynthia?
But considering what Cynthia had done to come between her and Seb, maybe she deserved it. If it weren't for Cynthia, her child might not have been born prematurely and might have survived.
Thinking of this, Susan felt a wave of sadness.
Seb noticed her silence and thought she was upset. He asked, "Are you still not satisfied with what I'm doing? If you..."
Susan quickly interrupted, "No! I just suddenly miss Hayden."
Mentioning Hayden instantly lightened the mood.
"He has grown a lot these past few months. He can walk on his own now and even say a few words. He's getting cuter by the day," Seb said, his voice full of affection.
"Really? I'll visit him soon if I have time. I wonder if he still remembers me?" Susan hadn't seen Hayden in a while and felt excited just thinking about it.
"I'm sure he does," Seb replied with a smile.
Susan glanced at the clock; it was already midnight. She reminded him, "It's late. Get some rest. You have work tomorrow and need to take care of the patient. It's going to be tough!"
Seb chuckled, "I smell a hint of jealousy."
"I'm not as petty as you. Alright, I'm hanging up!" Susan said and ended the call.
How could she not be jealous? Just thinking about Seb visiting Cynthia made her uncomfortable. But she was trying to control her emotions. She didn't want Seb to think she wasn't mature enough.
The phone rang again.
Seeing it was Seb, Susan answered, "What now?"
"I want a goodnight kiss, or I won't be able to sleep," Seb said, sounding spoiled.
"Mr. Anderson, how old are you?" Susan asked, amused.
Seb used to be domineering and stubborn, never listening to her opinions, always making decisions on his own. Now, seeing him act spoiled, Susan didn't know how to handle it. She realized Seb had this side to him, and it intrigued her.
"If you don't give me one, I won't hang up tonight," Seb threatened playfully.
"If you don't hang up, I can hang up," Susan teased back.
"Then I'll call again!" Seb laughed.
"Then I'll turn off my phone," Susan retorted, raising her chin.
Seb went silent, and Susan thought he had given up.
After a while, not hearing anything, Susan frowned and asked, "Why aren't you saying anything?"
"I'm getting dressed," Seb's deep voice came through.
"Why are you getting dressed?" It was already midnight; he should be undressing for bed.
"I have no choice. If you turn off your phone, I'll have to get dressed and come to your house to knock on your door," Seb said seriously, making it hard for Susan not to believe him.
