Chapter 292 Meet Her Nemesis
Linda was stoked with Susan's humility. She grinned and nodded, saying, "Alright, go check in with Paula Evans, the head of Group Six. If you got any questions, just hit her up."
"Got it," Susan nodded, then bounced out of Linda's office.
Susan wandered from office to office until she stumbled upon the Group Six general office. Before stepping in, she straightened her clothes and plastered on a sweet smile, hoping to make a first impression.
She strolled into the office, a big room with six desks. Five people were grinding away at their desks, and there was an empty one by the window. Susan thought, 'Is that my spot?'
"Hey there!" Seeing no one noticed her, Susan broke the ice.
The five folks immediately looked up at her, four women and one dude, checking her out from head to toe.
Susan smiled and nodded, saying, "Hey everyone, I'm the new hire, Susan Wilson. Please be nice to me!"
Weirdly, the four women gave her half-smiles, while the guy stood up, walked over, extended his hand, and said with a grin, "Hey, I'm Elliott Sullivan."
At that moment, Susan noticed two of the women snickering.
Susan had no clue what they were laughing at. She felt she looked just fine today.
Without overthinking, Susan extended her hand to shake Elliott's.
She meant to give a light handshake, but Elliott held her hand for several seconds, not letting go. Susan was a bit taken aback and tried to pull her hand back.
But Elliott held on tight, giving her a somewhat creepy smile, saying, "If you got any questions, just ask me. I'm here to help."
Though Elliott looked smooth, something about him felt off. So Susan quickly pulled her hand back and felt that this office was kinda weird, like the four women and one guy were all a bit off.
Susan then asked, "Can you tell me where Paula's office is?"
At this point, Susan felt a bit uneasy.
"Over there," Elliott pointed behind him.
"Thanks," Susan nodded, then walked to a separate office. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" a female voice called from inside.
Susan gently pushed the door open and walked in.
"Hey, I'm Susan Wilson, here to report," Susan said with a smile to a stylish woman in a white suit behind the desk, without looking around the office.
The woman looked up, and Susan saw her face, freezing in place.
The woman didn't seem surprised to see Susan. Her eyes met Susan's for a second, then she smiled and said, "Take a seat; I've been expecting you."
Hearing this, Susan snapped out of it and stammered, "Are you Paula?"
"Yep," Paula shrugged.
At that moment, Susan felt dizzy. She couldn't believe she had run into Fiona again, and now Fiona was the leader of Group Six, going by Paula.
Paula, what a nice name.
Seeing Fiona's calm demeanor, Susan knew Fiona must have known she was joining this group for a while and was waiting to humiliate her. After all, she had beef with Fiona, and Fiona was known for holding grudges.
Susan wanted to turn and bail, as working under Fiona would be a nightmare.
But Susan felt frustrated. She decided to confront Fiona before leaving, not wanting to look like a wimp.
Once she made up her mind, Susan boldly plopped down opposite Fiona's desk.
Crossing one leg over the other, Susan said, "Nice name change, Paula. Makes it hard for people to know who you are without seeing you."
Fiona leaned back in her leather chair, raising her chin with a smirk.
Seeing the smug look in Fiona's eyes, Susan said, "You knew I was joining, didn't you? Were you just waiting for me to see how well you're doing here?"
Fiona smiled and said, "Doing well might be a stretch. I've just made a bit of progress, that's all."
Then she took a file from the drawer and tossed it in front of Susan. "Linda gave me your resume last week, saying you were joining Group Six. Susan, don't you think it's fate? We both left George Law Firm, and a few years later, we meet again at Pioneer Accounting Firm."
Susan glanced at her resume in front of her.
The next moment, Susan stood up, grabbed her resume, and said, "It's just a coincidence. Looks like we can't work together anymore."
With that, Susan turned to leave.
"Wait!" Susan had just taken two steps when Fiona stood up.
Hearing this, Susan stopped and turned to Fiona, asking, "Anything else?"
"Just because you see me as your superior, you're not planning to work at Pioneer Accounting Firm?" Fiona asked, staring at Susan.
Susan knew Fiona was trying to provoke her. She wasn't that naive. Fiona didn't really want her to stay; she just wanted to see her leave in disgrace.
So, Susan sneered, "Working with a superior I have a grudge against won't be efficient. You should find someone else."
But to Susan's surprise, Fiona walked around the desk, stood in front of Susan, and said, "Susan, I've long since let go of the past. I hope you don't hold onto it either. It's been so long, and neither of us really lost. We each had our wins and losses, so it's even. The job at Pioneer Accounting Firm is as good as the one at Prosperity Group, and you have a good opportunity. One of our team members just left to get married and have a baby, so we're temporarily filling the position. Otherwise, we wouldn't have an opening for a year or more. So I advise you to think it over!"
