Chapter 873 Gentle and Considerate

Susan loved the cozy vibe of a family, but without Seb, it just didn't feel right.

She knew she couldn't give Hugo any false hope; her job now was to shut down his expectations.

"Hey, Hugo, I had a really great time with you, but I just don't see this going anywhere. I'm so sorry." Susan said.

Hugo's blue eyes showed a hint of disappointment, but he kept smiling. "I get it, Susan. I know it's not gonna be easy, so I'm in it for the long run. I'll always be here, waiting. Whenever you change your mind, just turn around, and I'll be right there."

Susan was taken aback by Hugo's words and couldn't help but furrow her brows.

Just as she was about to respond, Hugo cut her off, "Alright, I gotta head downtown. Got a lot to take care of. I'll email your friends to let them know you're safe."

Susan didn't know how to end the conversation anyway, so she was relieved when Hugo did it for her.

"I'm heading out now. Probably won't be back until evening." With that, Hugo turned and walked out.

Susan watched from the window as Hugo made his way to the car.

She replayed Hugo's words in her mind. They were sweet, almost intoxicating, but she wished it was Seb who was always there for her.

Leaning against the headboard, she watched Hugo and his car disappear, leaving only the beautiful scenery outside.

When Hugo returned in the evening, Susan was pacing around the room.

Her foot was better but still a bit swollen, making walking a hassle.

"Why are you out of bed?" Hugo was shocked to see her standing.

Seeing the travel-worn Hugo, Susan smiled, "Hugo, you're back?"

Hugo dropped everything he was holding and rushed over to scoop her up.

Caught off guard, Susan felt dizzy. "Hugo."

Panicking, she wrapped her arms around his neck, afraid of falling.

Hugo carried her to the bed, gently laying her down while scolding, "Your foot's not healed yet. You shouldn't be out of bed."

Realizing her mistake, Susan quickly let go and scooted further onto the bed. "My foot's almost better, but it's still kind of a pain to walk on."

Hugo looked serious. "That's why I can't leave you alone for a second!"

Susan forced a smile and then noticed the stuff Hugo had placed on the table, quickly changing the subject. "What did you get in the city?"

Hugo walked over to the table, his expression softening. "Just a few things I thought you might like."

Susan couldn't help but laugh when she saw what he had brought. He had showered her with gifts: hair clips, luxurious skincare products, an assortment of tempting snacks, and even an exquisite embroidered silk handkerchief.

The thought of this nobleman scouring shops for such things was hilarious, but it also underscored the depth of his feelings, feelings she couldn't reciprocate.

Seeing her furrow her brows, Hugo asked nervously, "What's wrong? You don't like them?"

"Oh, no, it's just that it seems a bit out of place for you to buy these things." Susan forced a smile.

Hugo smiled back.

Then he pulled out a passport and a plane ticket from his pocket and handed them to her. "I booked a flight for you from Rainbow City to Northstar City in three days. I think your foot should be fine by then."

Susan took the passport and ticket, feeling grateful for how much he had thought of everything. "Thank you, Hugo."

"Dinner's almost ready. Can you join me?" Hugo's face had a playful smile, but his eyes showed a hint of nervousness.

"Sure." Susan nodded.

Hugo was overjoyed and quickly went out to have the servants prepare dinner.

With only three days left before leaving, even though the scenery here was beautiful, Susan felt relieved. Hugo's deep affection had become a burden for her.

For the next three days, Hugo was almost always by her side.

Even so, he never crossed any boundaries. Although he cared deeply for Susan, he was very proper and didn't even say a word of confession.

Susan knew Hugo didn't want to trouble her, but the more he acted this way, the sadder she felt.

She thought to herself, 'Without Seb and the kids, I wouldn't be able to resist Hugo.'

Susan couldn't help but sigh at the unpredictability of life, always meeting the wrong people at the wrong time.

On the last day, her foot had almost healed. Although she couldn't walk long distances, she had no problem walking normally.

That afternoon, the sun was shining brightly, and the sky was clear.

"Come on, Susan," Hugo urged. "Let's take a walk. Who knows when you'll be back this way again?"

Susan agreed. Such beautiful scenery shouldn't be missed.

Hugo's idea of a walk was to have Susan ride on horseback while he led the horse on foot.

He took her far away, showing her a different landscape.

Along the way, Hugo spoke very little, his mood seemingly low.

Seeing him like this, Susan felt a pang of sympathy and softened her heart to say, "You don't have to be sad. The world is small; we might meet again soon."

She tossed off a casual attempt at comfort, but Hugo, reacting like a child, beamed with delight.

"Susan, I think so too." Hugo looked up at her sitting on the horse and smiled, revealing two rows of white teeth.
